The Review

In the past few years, it seems that Mendoza has landed on every savvy traveler’s to-do list. With a combination of high altitude and pure air, the region produces award-winning Malbecs, Sauvignon Blancs and Syrahs — wines that make even oenophiles go all soft in the limbs.

Hotel El Aguamiel fits perfectly into this scenic and fruitful landscape (besides wine, Mendoza produces olive oil and honey), with modern bungalows made from sustainable wood. The five-acre property is in Maipu, about 20 minutes from Mendoza City and an excellent base for exploring the region’s many wineries.

Privacy and seclusion are the key words here — some might even think the tall wall surrounding the property is too much. But with a lovely outdoor pool, a restaurant where you can get your Argentine beef fix (the steak here is fabulous) and friendly service from the dedicated staff, the hotel delivers on all fronts.

The minimalist rooms have an eco-chic vibe, designed with historic European warehouses in mind. The exteriors are made of light wood that nearly sparkles in the sunshine, with metal roofs; the interiors aren’t superfluous, with bare white walls, simple beds and smooth cement floors. Small porches, which have views out to the Andes, complete the picture.

After a day out exploring the wineries of the area, be sure to return to the hotel and taste just one more: In 2011 the hotel’s small vineyard produced its first harvest, a fresh and juicy Malbec of outstanding flavors that the guests can savor during meals.
