Quirky Silicon Valley digs mix business and pleasure with free wine happy hours, a firepit and fresh Cali cuisine
Cupertino may be a company town (Apple’s, to be precise), but inside the walls of the Cypress Hotel, you’re in Kimpton’s world. And that’s a very nice place to reside. There’s a warm, lived-in vibe to the common spaces, such as a youthful take on a drawing room. Dark wood paneling, a roaring fire and tufted wingback chairs mix with playful art and graphic print rugs.
Bed and Bath
Far from the sterile environment one might expect from a business-centric hotel, the rooms have a Jonathan Adler–style whimsicality, with geometric rugs, funky silhouette throw pillows and upholstered headboards. Then there are Kimpton’s signature animal print robes hanging in the closet. We love touches like in-room yoga mats, jogging maps of the area and Bigelow bath products.
There’s really very little reason to leave the confines of the hotel. You might not be interested in venturing much farther than the firepit at Park Place, the on-site bar and restaurant, which serves Cali wines, creative cocktails and locavore fare. If you do venture further, you can two-wheel it on the hotel’s free bicycles. Reward yourself afterward with an in-room spa treatment.
In the Area
From spam musubi to macaroni salad, J&J’s Hawaiian BBQ, just down the street from the hotel, is the real deal. Locals flock to Bay Area favorite Philz Coffee for their joe, which is made one cup at a time, selected from a dizzying array of roasts and beans to achieve personal pour-over perfection. Where else but in Silicon Valley would you find the Computer History Museum? It’s in neighboring Mountain View (Google’s home base) and definitely worth a ride over. Fan boys and girls will not want to miss the Apple Company Store, which does not sell computers or phones or tablets, but is the only place in the world to get Apple logo apparel and accessories.
