Very disappointing. Far from 5 star!
Reviewed 2 days ago

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at Castlemartyr on 17.02.2019. We arrived and checked in to room 15. Immediately upon entering the room we were met with a terrible smell. At first glance the room itself was beautiful, very spacious and we had a lovely private outdoor area. However on closer inspection the headboard on the bed looked like it had seen better days. It had lots of chips and looked rather unsightly. The bathroom was absolutely stunning but the toilet was constantly running and there was writing on the wall .I was very disappointed I had planned this trip away as a gift for my boyfriend's birthday - this was his birthday present plus the day we stayed was his actual birthday. We just wanted to have a nice day.

I proceeded to go to front desk and report my issues. The lady was very nice and helpful. She said a manager would move us to room 20. Room 20 was much smaller than room 15. Also I noticed a big chip on the bathroom door. I told the manager that I didn't want to stay in this room I was happy to stay in room 15 as long as the issues were resolved. She said to leave it with her and she would come back to me.

A while later the manager brought me to room 4. I thanked her and agreed to move. We finally settled into our room at about 5.30pm. (we arrived at 2pm)

After a swim we came back to get ready. We noticed our prosecco ice bucket, glasses and strawberries had not been moved from room 15. I phoned down to the front desk and asked for them to be moved. This never happened.

Getting ready was a bit of an ordeal. The pull out mirror in the bathroom would not stay up. It kept flopping down. My boyfriend had to put his washbag underneath it to keep it up in order for me to be able to do my makeup. I then attempted to find a plug near a mirror for my straightener to do my hair. I could find only one plug near a mirror at the far end of the room near the window. I had to lean across the desk in order to see myself in the mirror.

We had dinner in the Italian. We are both vegetarians. Other than pizza, we have one option of a vegetarian starter- bruschetta and one vegetarian main - pasta. This is very disappointing and unexpected from a 5 star hotel. There are so many vegetarian equivalents on the market now, Quorn mince, Quorn steaks, Tofu, Tempeh. You can make almost any meat dish with these vegetarian ingredients. There is no need to create a seperate menu. All you need to do is replace the meat steak with a quorn steak. Replace the chicken with marinated tofu. Replace mince meat with quorn mince. Replace fish with marinated tempeh.

The breakfast experience was also disappointing . My boyfriend had a omelette and I had the vegetarian breakfast. It sounded lovely but was a let down. The spring rolls were tasteless and very greasy. I would suggest replacing these carrot rolls with vegetarian sausages. Simple solution.

Issue Checklist:
I would advise someone to go through the rooms and critic them. Use them as if you were a guest. Check the walls for marks check the wood for chips, check that the mirrors stay up in place, that the lights work, check that there is a plug near a mirror.
Paint and clean the door going into the kitchen beside the fine dining restaurant. It is absolutely filthy.
Check paint work in the fine dining restaurant. There were spatters of food on the wall beside us when we were eating our breakfast.
Address the vegetarian options
I am extremely disappointed by my stay. As I said, I had bought this as gift to my boyfriend. I felt embarrassed by everything that went wrong and it reflected badly on me.Castlemartyr has such a prestigious name. I was expecting so much more. I was expecting a 5 star experience and that is not what we received. I would hope that the hotel will take on board what I have said and make the necessary improvements.

I did send an email to the general manager. His reply was as underwhelming as our stay. He did apologise for the experience we had had and he would give me a discount on a future stay. Honestly, that is just not good enough. My partner's birthday was completed ruined. Why, Oh Why would I ever book this hotel again. He offer is an empty gesture as the likeliness of it being fulfilled is slim to none!

Very very very disappointed customer ;(

Beautiful Stay, but not perfect
Reviewed 4 days ago

The hotel and surrounding area is exactly what you would expect when you book this hotel.

On arrival we were greeted by a very welcoming reception and received a welcome drink and help with our baggage to the room. Initial emotions about the room on entering is the size and lovely the room appears.

The grounds of the hotel and woodland walks are beautiful for an afternoon stroll.

The pool and thermal suite facilities were very nice and everything in the spa area was clean and well kept.

Dinner in Francini's was lovely and the staff as usual were extremely attentive.

We had cocktails in the Knights bar both nights of our stay, there was a slight consistency issue where the same drink was totally different on the second night. But they cocktails were lovely and Knights bar and 'the Living Room' are both lovely settings for a quiet drink. Although the paintings in the Knights bar could do with getting the cob webs cleaned off them.

However, I feel when you stay at a 5 star resort like Castlemartyr everything should be perfect but there were a few simple things in the room that were just a little bit lazy.

1) Bulb blown in the dressing area.
2) Strange black grate hanging down in dressing area.
3) Lamp on the desk in the bedroom was plugged out, because if you plugged it in the switch on the lamp did not work to turn it off again.
4) Knob removed from one of the beside lockers as if the in room control panel in this locker was broken so instead of fixing it it was just sealed back up.
5) Towel holders in the bathroom at the sinks were both loose.

I stayed in castlemartyr for one night, I was brought as part of a Christmas gift. I stayed in the junior suite and it was so comfortable. Rooms were spacious and had everything in them that we could want. The staff from the check in desk, to the wait staff to the spa staff were all lovely, super friendly but as professional as what you would expect from a resort like this. Couldn't speak more highly of them. Would definitely visit again.

This was bought for the 2 off us from family

We arrived at 3pm just at check in and all was smooth, we were hoping to dine in the Italian restaurant as the other option was the fine dining. We asked at check-in do we need to reserve and was told that it's closed in winter on a Monday. This was a bit of a shock but we thought maybe the club house, after a call this was closed and the hotels main bar stopped serving food at 6pm which was a little early for us. So the only option was fine dinning, we didn't pack for this but was told as it was quiet that the dress code would be little more relaxed. A email about the dinning in winter would been a good heads up.

We got to our room, it was stunning massive bed and beautiful bathroom. We went for a walk around, thinking there would be a nice walk unless we went wrong way there didn't seem to be a massive walk, but the grounds are nice that we did see. The garden is tucked away behind the main house which is cute and full of quirky statues or animals. We went to the pool which is not the biggest but nice, there was a kids swimming lesson going on where only one lane was marked off for this so didn't cause any issue. There is a small jacuzzi with note for adults only.

The dinner was in the Bell tower, we got table by window, the food was Devine! To the point that my husband ordered dessert (never does) because the starter and main was so tasty.

Breakfast is also in the Bell tower they had fresh honeycomb that is heated and fresh honey dripping into bowl which was very different. Continental breakfast is the help yourself buffet and order the fresh cooked breakfast at table.

Lovely stay rooms are beautiful and the food delish.

Stayed for a one night break for a friend's birthday recently. There were 3 of us in total, and we got a great deal when we booked via the hotel directly; €160 pp for 1 night B&B in a suite, 2 course dinner in the Bell Tower Restaurant and a 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage in the on-site spa. As our spa treatments were early, we arrived at the hotel at 9am - I expected to leave my overnight bag in reception to ask it be brought to our room when it was ready at the usual check-in time, but to our delight, the room was ready at 9am. We checked in, and the suite was gorgeous, spacious with a king bed in the bedroom, a single bed added to the sitting room area, a large bathroom with separate shower, bath and toilet areas, and long balcony accessible from both the sitting room and bedroom overlooking the golf course. The spa area is smaller than others I've been to, but not overcrowded with jacuzzi, sauna, steamroom, tropical showers, and 2 separate relaxation rooms. My treatment was fantastic - I felt so relaxed afterwards. We were then offered a wash and blow-dry in the onsite hairdressers for an extra €15 which we availed of. We requested an ice bucket and champagne flutes be sent to our room in the afternoon which arrived quickly, enjoyed dinner in the restaurant and then returned to our room for the evening. Breakfast the following morning was generous and tasty, served from 7.30 to 10.30am which is great, and checkoiut time is 12pm. The grounds are beautiful, there's plenty of parking onsite, and the staff are amazing. Would certainly return, and recommend to others.
