The Review

Behind a heritage-listed Italian facade, the Strozzi Palace occupies a dark stone building near a good pub and Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum — a promising hint at the mix of entertainment on offer in this Gloucestershire city. I used my private code (sent when I made my reservation) for entry into both the small, stylish foyer and my suite, where the signature Italian motif is expressed in fabrics, furniture and modern fittings: black, steel-gray and white with metal and leather details.

With just six suites, the Strozzi Palace is boutique in size and also in concept, with an emphasis on home comforts. My Napoli Suite had a working kitchen, a separate living area and a small balcony, and although it was more stylish than spacious, there was ample room to prepare light meals and work on a computer, as well as stretch out to watch the wide-screen TV. The big coffee table design books added a homey touch.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/1802/prop-16860-1317075304-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The aesthetic is modern, with furnishings in glass and metal and a cool monochrome palette.”}

With no public areas or restaurant, the Strozzi is best for independent travelers who like to get out and explore their surroundings. From the hotel it’s an easy stroll to the center of Cheltenham, a flat, eminently walkable city. Like Bath, Cheltenham Spa was once a gathering place for ladies and gentlemen of society, and the theaters, restaurants, parks and promenade still have the gracious air of places designed for pure enjoyment. Large cream-colored stone buildings, curved streets and manicured parks give the town a distinguished and elegant air.

The famous health-giving waters, which have been used for 250 years, are still available for tasting at the Pumphouse, which is a short drive or a good walk out of town. En route you’ll pass many examples of Regency houses and public buildings, and you should stop at one of the dozens of cozy teahouses.

A Good Choice

We booked the Tuscany and Napoli suites and both were beautifully furnished with all the amenities needed for a short stay. Of the two I preferred the Napoli for its small, outside patio area which gave for a pleasant view. The Tuscany is described as having a Juliette balcony but this is small and does not have a particularly attractive view. Both of the apartments were spacious and tastefully furnished with good quality furniture. The fridge was stocked with milk, fruit yoghurts and jams and the hospitality tray had biscuits, chocolates and a good selection of hot drinks for our arrival. We booked through Expedia and then received an email from Strozzi asking us to confirm our stay and authorise a £200 security deposit against a card. Any contact I had with the Strozzi team before my stay was handled in an efficient, friendly and helpful manner. Our apartment was ready on arrival and we had no problems with the keypad entry system, the codes we’d been sent a couple of days before working perfectly. The only downside with Strozzi for us was that it does not have its own parking. We were sent a list of nearby car parks in advance but the Cheltenham road system is a bit of a nightmare and we had trouble finding them even though they were supposed to be close. In the end we parked on a private car park up the side road right next to the apartments - marked as a no through road- which was more expensive at £13.50 for 24hours but which was by far the most convenient choice and no need to be up before 8a.m. to replace the ticket. This car park was not on the list we were sent but it would definitely be of benefit if Strozzi made some kind of arrangement for guests to park there. Overall we had a lovely stay at Strozzi. It is a couple of minutes walk to the shops and restaurants, beautifully furnished and so convenient for everything while having that bit more space than a hotel room. We were all pleased with our choice and would definitely stay again on our next trip to Cheltenham.

Lovely boutique hotel

Amazing little hotel right in the centre of Cheltenham, short walk to bars, shops and restaurants.
We had the room on the top floor and it was lovely, with a huge skylight in the ceiling. Everything was modern and really clean. They also provided some nice breakfast bits which we had both mornings as the selection was so good.
Thank you for an amazing stay!

What a little gem!

I stay here frequently on business, and can highly recommend it. Comfortable, smart, spacious and everything you need for a home away from home. The location is very central, lots of bar, restaurants and shops in the area, and Cheltenham is a charming town.

Fab stay

We stayed in the Siena suite and it had everything we needed. It was warm over the weekend and the air con was welcome. There was plenty of bread, butter, jam and cereal etc for breakfast. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Weekend in Cheltenham

We chose Strozzi Palace primarily because of its location, which is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants and also close to the church where we were attending a wedding during our stay, and also because we knew there was convenient parking close by (we parked in Chester Walk, which is just steps away, and the parking fees for our weekend stay were refunded to us very promptly by Strozzi Palace).

We stayed in the Milano Suite, which had everything we needed for a lovely weekend’s stay including a quality breakfast provided daily – cereals, bread and croissants, jams, cheeses, fresh fruit, and the added bonus of proper filter coffee!

There was some street noise late at night, which is to be expected since its location is so close to the centre of Cheltenham, but nothing too intrusive, and we didn’t hear a peep from the other occupants in the building.

This was a new experience for us as we would normally stay in a hotel, but we very much enjoyed the freedom it provided and also being able to have a relaxed breakfast at a time of our choosing. All in all it was a very peaceful and enjoyable stay.
