Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa
What We Love
- Tabacon’s pièce de résistance: natural thermal springs that wend their way through the gardens
- Mud wraps and top-notch massages at the Grand Spa (for an extra fee), reachable via a footbridge that crisscrosses the springs
- Even the swimming pools are naturally heated by the hot springs, which means sitting at the swim-up bar in hot tub–temperature water
- Looming views of the Arenal Volcano, one of the most active in the world, from your guestroom
- Tabacon caters to all sorts: families, honeymooners, tour groups, singles
- An all-ages water slide into the main pool, which is a short swim from the Arenal Wet Bar
What To Know
- The hot springs are a decent walk (down a hill and a series of steps) from Tabacon’s guestrooms, but a free shuttle is available
- Nonguests can purchase day passes to the springs, so that area can get packed in the afternoons; day-passers must leave by 6 p.m.
- Guests are required to wear a wristband, handed out at check-in, for the entirety of their stay
- The roads coming from the west toward Tabacon curve around the mountains and narrow for certain bridges and crossings
- Free WiFi
- Handicap Accessible
- Parking On Site

How to Get There
We found this place through a recommendation from a travel planner and it was the highlight of our Costa Rican vacation. As a family of 5, we've done vacations together in Europe and coming to the tropics was a big departure from what we're used to. But staying at the Tabacon was a first-class, five-star experience. The service from all of the staff was stellar and the spa and hot springs are incredible-- we've never experienced any place like this before. If you are looking for a beautiful place to experience the rainforest with a family, this is the place to go. We only stayed for 3.5 days, but we'll be back soon so that we can do a full 5 days. Thank you, Tabacon for making our family vacation one-of-a-kind.
We visited the Tabacon Hotel and spa during our honeymoon. The hotel is very popular and is quite busy as a result. However, the staff are all highly organised and efficient, so we were never kept waiting if we needed anything. We arrived too early to check in, but we were given hotel robes and invited to go to the hot springs whilst our room was being prepared. You can either walk to the springs or take a very short shuttle ride there. The springs are absolutely beautiful with pools of different design and temperatures. There is also a private area for hotel guests only (and adults only) which has some of the most beautiful (and hottest) pools, and a private bar. It was the perfect haven when the rest of the springs got a little busy. There is also a beautiful spa. I had a manicure that was fairly reasonable in price, but comes with use of the spa pool and complimentary snacks and drinks. Definitely worth doing if you want to treat yourself.
The hotel itself was also very nice. The staff surprised us with some extra treats in the room for our honeymoon, which was greatly appreciated. The room was large, clean and turned down twice a day.
There are two restaurants - one at the spa and one on site. We ate in both as we were there over 3 days. The food was good, but definitely best at the hotel restaurant, if a little expensive. The menu was a little restricted, particularly for me as a vegetarian, although they were able to adapt some dishes for me.
We had a brilliant stay here and lots of people told us Tabacon is definitely the best hot springs in the Arenal area, particularly as it's one of the only natural ones. I'd highly recommend a stay here, or even just a day visit to the beautiful hot springs!
We had a fantastic time at the Tabacon Resort. The room was amazing, it was very clean and had everything we could ask for. Enjoyed the thermal hot springs and had the best massage of my life at the spa. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. If I ever return to CR I would stay longer at the Tabacon.
This resort is first class all the way. From the moment you walk through the doors to register, they have a welcome drink and a refreshing towel ready for you. The staff is very friendly and very accommodating. The grounds are simply amazing! It's a secluded little piece of heaven! Our room was incredible, it was HUGE! I believe it was a suite. Again the service is just perfect! The hot springs are breathtaking! They are absolutely gorgeous! The property, the trails to each of the spring 'pools', the relaxing lounge areas, the private "guest area" is honestly just superb!!!! I highly recommend! This is seriously a wonderful place to visit and enjoy!
Six of us stayed for 4 nights before going to Guanacaste area. The resort setting is absolutely beautiful with great views of Arenal volcano (when not clouded over). Service and food was great, although meals were very pricey, with no real other options.
If you stay, must-do things are the hanging bridges park and the town of La Fortuna, both 15 minutes away by car. And, of course, the hot springs!
One star off because there were simply no activities available within walking distance (other than walking around the extensive and beautifully landscaped hot springs) unless you shelled out more money for day trips and excursions.
And with only two dining options available (pricey/fancy spa restaurant or priceier/fancier hotel restaurant), we soon yearned for something else. On our last evening, we ordered wonderfully delicious meals delivered from a restaurant in La Fortuna, at a third of the cost of the on-site restaurant. Gourmet was getting old!
I wish we had only stayed 2 or 3 nights instead of 4. That would have given us ample time to see the thermal springs, volcano, and hanging bridges. Free shuttle trips to La Fortuna would have been very welcomed.
