Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa
What We Love
- Tabacon’s pièce de résistance: natural thermal springs that wend their way through the gardens
- Mud wraps and top-notch massages at the Grand Spa (for an extra fee), reachable via a footbridge that crisscrosses the springs
- Even the swimming pools are naturally heated by the hot springs, which means sitting at the swim-up bar in hot tub–temperature water
- Looming views of the Arenal Volcano, one of the most active in the world, from your guestroom
- Tabacon caters to all sorts: families, honeymooners, tour groups, singles
- An all-ages water slide into the main pool, which is a short swim from the Arenal Wet Bar
What To Know
- The hot springs are a decent walk (down a hill and a series of steps) from Tabacon’s guestrooms, but a free shuttle is available
- Nonguests can purchase day passes to the springs, so that area can get packed in the afternoons; day-passers must leave by 6 p.m.
- Guests are required to wear a wristband, handed out at check-in, for the entirety of their stay
- The roads coming from the west toward Tabacon curve around the mountains and narrow for certain bridges and crossings
- Free WiFi
- Parking On Site

How to Get There
SPA AND RESTAURANT IS VERY FAR AWAY FROM ROOMS, 1/2 mile down the highway in a separate property. They shuttle you back and forth, which I hate. I walked there last night after dark and felt scared when I had to run across the busy highway to get into the property. Very inconvenient and NOT Zen-like at all. The coffee in the room is "pod-type" so this morning I walked up to the lobby and was directed to the restaurant very far away. Ug. I later learned I could buy an espresso there, but that was not offered. I arrived last night, spent extra (quite a lot) on Honeymoon Suite to insure best of best. The first room they put me in was, bottom floor, garden view, just okay (not worth the money). They finally moved me after bellman insisted. It is very nice, but he had to fight to get it for me. It feels very "Disneyland-like" because lots of tour buses come in from everywhere with lines of people and shuttles constantly coming and going. People not staying in the hotel come in droves with tour companies to use the spa, as well. and it feels kind of like a water park, party spot. I guess I expected a quiet, private, exclusive resort. This feels corporate and commercial, but the grounds are spectacular and beautiful. I will be here two more nights and will update my review if my impressions change, but so far, I regret booking here and having spent so much money on it. I am a seasoned, high-end traveler and I do not mind spending to achieve superior experience. I feel like I am being herded around like cattle. By the way, I did book BEFORE the holiday to avoid the kids and the crowds to recuperate from my stressful business.
I can’t say enough about Tabacon. They have an incredible system of hot springs. The springs are a river of pools around 100*F. Perfect in the hot climate. The service is top notch and rooms are high class. They have an air conditioned gym so you don’t have to skip out on your workouts. The hot springs have a pool bar and meal options are many. Again though, the hot springs are amazing!
We stayed at Tabacón in one of their honeymoon suites for the first part of our trip. It was absolutely perfect! The bed was comfortable, the room was nice, and the staff were awesome! Anything we asked of them, they made it happen and all with smiling faces! While one of us were able to speak a little more than minimal Spanish, we had zero issues with a language barrier. They were quick to help us in English if necessary. The Resort grounds were absolutely beautiful!!!
The breakfast buffet was great! The coffee was delicious - came in a French press for your table. The rooms had Britt Coffee espresso machines with complimentary coffee pods and tea - the espresso was delicious!
The view from the room allowed for a perfect view of the volcano (clouds willing). The thermal springs were nice! There were so many to choose from that you won't get bored. The pool and pool bar were great! We barely ever had to wait more than 5 minutes for the shuttle that goes back and forth from the hotel side to the hot springs side.
THE SPA! This was fantastic! We did a 50 minute couples Swedish massage and will remember this forever. The locker rooms were very nice and had all the amenities if you wanted to shower following your treatment (showers, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryer, combs, etc). You get a locked locker to store your belongings in. There is a hot tub for your enjoyment either pre or post treatment and the "fruit therapy" offered is very good!! We could've stayed at the spa forever.
We were sad to leave because we enjoyed ourselves so much and we hope to be able to come back for another trip!
Wow! What an amazing experience. I booked my fiance and I a day pass with dinner and highly recommend it. There are several different pools and the scenery is exquisite. It was a great way to unwind after hiking the day before and we really didn't want to leave. We went around noon and had plenty of time time to enjoy all of the amenities before dinner. The food was very good and the buffet offered a variety of choices. Overall it was a great experience and one I highly recommend.
The moment we arrived, we were swiftly over run by the valet boys. They were insisting we use their free service, and when we said no, we were told we would have to leave our car somewhere down the road, so we decided to use the service.
Unfortunately that meant each time we wanted to leave, we had to wait for one of the guys to take a bicycle over to our car and bring it to us. This was really annoying when I forgot something in the car and was not allowed to go to it myself, I had to have the valet guy search my car for me.
Our room had a beautiful view of the volcano which made up for a few things we didnt like. For example the shower, or lack of one, we had a rain shower focet over our jacuzzi, a little awkward and not so easy to get in and out of. The room also smelled very musty. The small fridge is stocked with drinks and there are snacks but all are very over priced.
The walk to the spring was nice, you can also take the shuttle which comes around quite often. This was my first time at a hot springs hotel so I cant say if it was the best or not. Honestly, it was ok, some of the springs had a nice smooth bottom so you could walk, other had sharp rocks making it hard to put your feet down. The water was warm but not warm enough for me. The Shanghai gardens were ok, not for me though, too secluded and it was hard to find a hut available.
The buffet mediocre. They called it international buffet, which basically consisted of bbq chicken, steak, and fries.
I preferred the breakfast buffet and went to town for other meals.
We tried Los Tucan restaurant for one meal and it was quite good.
Overall our stay was nice and I think if you enjoy hot (or warm) water springs, you'll enjoy this place.
