How to Get There
Had 3 nights at this beautifully located resort hotel. Location, front Desk, rooms and facilities are all first class. The dining room food is generally good but service can best be described as enthusiastic, but with little finesse or apparent experience. Short staffed, and a bit chaotic and not up to the same standard of the rest of the resort.
Front desk Chantelle and Nisha delivered exceptional world class service.
Would recommend, and return but felt that the management of the restaurant needs improvement.
We booked super last minute for a table of 19 after a family wedding and than a surprise engagement! The restaurant fitted us in no problem and looked after us wonderfully. Food was amazing!! Will definitely be back :)
The room was very nicely appointed and the bathroom was beautiful. However the chalets are all on a steep hillside and although there is a buggy if you require it, our chalet still had some steep steps up to it, so definitely wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility issues. The rooms were surrounded by trees and, when we were there, cicadas, which were quite deafening. I know the hotel cannot do anything about this noise but think people should be made aware of this. Breakfast was very tasty, although the hot buffet had been cleared when we arrived just after 9am, we ordered from the menu. We did enjoy our stay but it was a bit out of the way, so would probably not return.
We stayed in a Kauri Chalet which obviously had been renovated last year. Location - Pauanui Beach is accessible if you like to walk, as is the headland and peak. Beautiful scenery, and beach appears quite safe. Mostly flat neighbourhood which makes for an easy stroll, although not a great deal to see once you have done the beach, headland peak and river inlet. The local shops are not too far but recommend if staying and wanting to do your own catering buy before you arrive. Quite limited and due to it's remote nature expensive e.g. paid over $3 for 1 litre of milk. Check also if eating out that they are open too. It is a long drive to anywhere else, but if planning just to relax at the resort then that would be a better plan. Hot Water Beach or Cathedral Cove, or even Coromandel Town are all distant. Roads are quite windy and can be slow traffic.
Within the resort the dining we totally enjoyed. Had two dinners in the restaurant which were on expectation. Breakfast was adequate, having the continental option as not offering how buffet at that time. Again the lack of numbers would make it difficult to provide more diversity for the cost.
Accommodation: No oven in the room and the bar fridge quite minimal for storing anything major. It has a queen bed and the space is quite nice, even though the tv is mounted sideways to anywhere to view. Cleanliness is ok, but noticed several areas where cobwebs had formed e.g. corner of the room and against the wardrobe. Was quite comfortable though, and facing west the sun seemed to come up quite late, but good coverage from foliage in the afternoon. The ensuite and laundry facilities were perfect, really happy with the layout and quality of fixtures/fittings.
Parking was in a car park away from the chalet/accommodation and this was not critical except it made the area quieter from passing traffic, but awkward to take things to/from the car. The pool and gym facilities are excellent and the possibility of using the tennis court has potential, was a little hot during our stay for an opportunity to participate.
Overall, this stay was pleasant. Lovely staff at reception and restaurant made our stay better than it could have been. Possibly a resort a little under what we had expected from some promotions but still happy with our two nights here.
Grand Mercure Puka Park well deserves a five star rating. Our family's second stay here and what a difference General Manager Andrew Dearle has made to the resort. We arrived early for our stay and escorted to the lovely bar to have a cold refreshment while our rooms were being prepared. Excited by the pool, sauna and hot tub the kids were off. Transported to our room, what a delight to see beautiful new plants around the property and our room nestled among the trees with a balcony to enjoy a relaxing cold beverage. Lunch was spent on the main deck the following day, sampling the lovely new lunch menu. An enjoyable stay had by the whole family.
