How to Get There
We travelled from Auckland to Pauanui for a mid-winter getaway and to recuperate from the daily city hustle and what a beautiful place Puka Park was to do this at.
We checked in at about 2pm and were given the keys to our lovely three bedroom chalet overlooking greenery.
The chalet itself was two stories high and had great heating, kitchen facilities including a full size kitchen, bathrooms on both levels and two large decks upstairs and downstairs.
Both levels also had gas powered fire places which we used pretty much all day and night, except for when we were away.
The restaurant in the resort has great food with Mondays holding buffet dinners from different countries each week (definitely something worth checking out).
Some tips - bring your activewear for the tennis court, your togs for the heated pool, spa and sauna, and bring some food to cook up if you’re not a big fan of eating out all the time as the number of takeouts open during off peak seasons are limited. We took a bunch of movies and board games to keep us entertained during rainy days too.
Also, highly recommended is Pauanui beach and the summit walk, as well as a drive to Tairua on a nice, clear day.
Just spent 4 memorable nights at the resort. The chalet was perfect, with plenty of room and privacy, and with modern facilities. Loved the walk up the hill each night after a very pleasant meal in the restaurant! Staff were very attentive, friendly, and welcoming. We hadn’t planned on spending every night at the restaurant but the food was so delicious, and the ambience just right that we quickly changed our plans and visited each night. And for the fabulous breakfasts, too!
The chalets are each set into the surrounding vegetation such that you have total immersion in the scenery, evoking the feeling that you could be a million miles from civilisation- and yet the main building is less than 100 metres away.
Even without good staff, this place has a particular magic about it, but the staff that we encountered elevated it into something quite special, and worthy of special mention. Special commendations to those that we met - every single staff member was generous to a fault, and our only regret was not being able to thank the chef for the brilliant food each day.
Thoroughly recommend the place as a get-away, but also as a perfect base to explore the Coromandel (and there is plenty to see).
I stayed in a Tawa Tree Hut. It was absolutely beautiful. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much effort. This place is also close to the beach. I had wonderful forest and ocean views from my well appointed beautiful hut. Great place to stay to explore the Coromandel Peninsula and the Hot Beach! I'll be back!
