The Review

The Vista Verde experience is all about great service, attention to detail, continual personal betterment and a roster of diverse activities. Its small size (40 guests maximum) and minimum one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio guarantee personalized flexibility and as much (or little) interaction as you desire. Your hosts, Ben and Holly Martin and Dace Starkweather regale you with tales of their varied careers; as the resident singing cowboy, Dace might even serenade you with a few Western ditties.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/541/prop-39974-1320258336-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The nine recently renovated log cabins are private homes for your outdoor adventures.”}The nine recently remodeled one- to three-bedroom log cabins have a patio hot tub, butter-soft leather sofas and fridges stocked with the beer and wine of your choice. Beam ceilings, Western antiques, quilts and cast iron wood-burning stoves extend the sense of place and history. The Steamboat Soap Company fashions boutique handmade amenities, including the lodgepole pine beds, crafted on-site from ranch wood by Bill Backer, head of maintenance. Three lodge rooms, conveniently upstairs, were also recently refurbished in haute Western style.

In the kitchen, executive chef Matt Campbell emphasizes quality, freshness and creativity, obtaining his ingredients from local purveyors. Multicourse “formal dinners” (though dress is anything but) might offer braised Colorado lamb shank with wild mushroom spaetzle ragout or sesame-mint-crusted ahi tuna steak served over avocado nori rolls with yuzu-ponzu sauce. Wine and artisanal beers flow freely.

At dinner the staff circulates to ask guests their preferred activities for the next day. Go for a sleigh ride, a sledding trip, and ice skating lesson or a snowshoe walk, or try some of the year-round activities like yoga and cooking classes. Guides and instructors tailor experiences to your interests and abilities, utilizing top-notch gear from mountain bikes to skinny skis, snowshoes to fishing rods. All transfers, including jaunts to historic Steamboat Springs for skiing, golf and shopping are included.

The horses really rule the roost, and they have idiosyncrasies and personalities as colorful as the staff. You’ll practically become a horse whisperer yourself in the full-size heated indoor riding arena. Wranglers monitor your progress and adapt to your learning curve, getting you out on trails through the breathtaking mountains or providing more intensive clinics to enhance your equestrian skills. For more advanced riders, concentrated horsemanship clinics focus on specific techniques.

Don’t expect the latest gadgetry (though the lodge offers free WiFi). Vista Verde is all about experiencing the Great Outdoors fully, while also enjoying a luxurious escape from the everyday.

Fantastic Family Vacation
Reviewed 1 month ago

It started with my son declaring he would not 1) ride a horse and 2) join any of the teen activities. Well, by the end of the week, he had ridden horses almost every day and participated in almost every teen activity, plus lots of fishing. The staff and other guests were the most wonderful people. Incredible service, gorgeous setting. My two teens left begging to return next year.

It was perfect !

My husband and I came to Vista Verde for our honeymoon and it was the best decision !
The staff is amazing, very friendly, always helpful and always trying to make you feel great !
We felt right at home in our cabin and enjoyed every moment of it !

We came here for the horses mainly and were not disappointed : the daily horse feeding is quite the experience, and the trail rides are so much fun !
We also liked the fact that you will keep the same horse through the trip, which helps create bonds.
We had only 1 class and I wish we had more time to learn ...

All the activities are very well organised and so fun : ice fishing is definitely something you have to try !
We also did extra activities (not included) which were amazing : snowmobile & dog sledding. The ranch will just post those on your bill which is very nice and avoids all headache.

It is really nice to have meals in common with other guests and the staff as you can discuss the activities of the day ect.
The food is simply amazing !
If I could make a suggestion it would be to have more gluten free option at breakfast (A girl can dream but gluten free pancakes would have been amazing ;) )

My husband felt sick during the honeymoon and the staff was really helpful : one night he was not feel good enough to go to dinner but the staff arranged to food delivery in our cabin, he was provided pain killer when needed and when we had to shorten our trip, the ranch help us with arrangements and cancelled our last night with no charge.

The all time we were there we thought we should come back with our families and I hope we will soon :)

Thank you so much for making our honeymoon perfect !

Amazing winter adventures

This was my 5th trip to Vista Verde Ranch and our second trip during winter. While the scenery is spectacular and the activities are wonderful, this ranch excels in finding and keeping superb staff. Every employee, whether guide, wrangler, dining staff , ranch operations, or housekeeper, excel at their job, and our caring for all guests. We Already rebooked for next winter.

Back again and still amazing!

When I found this ranch on the internet last year, I did lots of research because it seemed too good to be true. All the past guests raved about how awesome this place was. When I went last year, I was blown away. The staff is so wonderful, food is delicious and so many fun activities. I met so many people who are repeat guests. Now, I am too and I have already booked my trip for next year. Two visits down and looking forward to my next one.
