Eclectically styled stay with sizzling lounge and year-round pool scene, down the block from Aspen Mountain

The Look

Mod style with a twist. As with other properties in the Kimpton hotel family, the 90-room Sky likes to play with expectations through decor. The lobby’s distinctive seats — white leather wing chairs with cartoonishly tall backs — and an oversize orange pendant lamp add to the design factor. The hotel fulfills its role as a place to see and be seen with a sense of fun, from “Altitude Adjustment” daily wine hours to the in-room minibars (which include cheeky essentials from intimacy kits and sunglasses) to the dog-shaped chalkboard that welcomes canine guests by name.

Bed and Bath

Rooms continue the tongue-in-cheek vibe, with a play on 1970s ski culture. High-thread-count Frette linens are paired with cable-knit upholstered headboards, and the modern laminate furniture and chunky side chairs are done in cocoa hues, houndstooth fabric, and orange racing stripes. All interior wing rooms have either a small balcony or a patio. Fairly utilitarian baths are kitted out with Kimpton’s classic zebra- or leopard-print robes and C.O. Bigelow toiletries.

Locals and guests alike gather in the 39 Degrees Lounge, sinking into deep banquettes and chairs to watch ski scenes on large flat-screen TVs and munch on giant pretzels with cheese fondue or tuna tacos, with a groovy soundtrack and crackling fireplace to set the mood. (The lounge also serves a full breakfast daily.) The party often spills out into the pool area — open until 10 p.m. daily — with its tiered-rock waterfall feature and firepits. A small fitness center in the basement has the basics; workout junkies can request a guest pass and head to the Aspen Club and Spa, a short shuttle ride away. For further action, the hotel offers free cruiser bikes in summer, and the on-site ski shop has gear rentals in winter.

In the Area

Tune yourself up for outdoor recreating by taking the gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain for a morning yoga class. Fashionista meccas like Nuages and Max are one block over, in the Aspen Square building, while traditionalists splurge on European luxury goods at Gorsuch, by the gondola. One of Aspen’s hottest restaurants, Element 47, across the street at the Little Nell, serves dishes such as locally raised wagyu beef in a sophisticated setting. At nearby Belly Up Aspen, one of Colorado’s best live music venues, performers from Blues Traveler to Michael Franti and Spearhead heat up the intimate space.
