How to Get There
Our time at The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island was magical — a remarkable combination of relaxation, fun, fellowship, pampering, fine dining, and—of course—natural beauty. From the moment we stepped out of our car on arrival, it felt as though every member of the staff was devoted to ensuring that we had a memorable experience. I was attending a bankers’ convention.
The Sanctuary is lovely, very tastefully decorated, has Southern charm for sure. The room was small but nice, had a great balcony overlooking the beach and lawn. I didn't see any obvious wear issues in the room itself. The rest of the hotel was different. The pool desperately needs an update - the chairs and tables are old, the tile worn down. I will say the pool attendants tried very hard, as did the rest of the staff at the hotel, but it just couldn't override the sense that the whole place needed an overhaul.
The transpiration needs some help. The golf shuttle was so slow, we often waited 20-25 minutes at the Ocean and Osprey Courses. Either don't have it and tell everyone they have to drive, or run a more continuous shuttle so people are not stranded.
The other drawback was the food. Don't try to have a sushi restaurant if you are only going to offer two types of fish and sad rolls. Stick to what you do well. The Ocean Room itself was much better. The sommelier at the Ocean Room was wonderful both times we talked to her and selected great wines.
It is also clear that it is very much an event/wedding/conference hotel. They are putting a lot of money into building new facilities for those things, but into the individual traveler experience.
So glad we tried because Kiawah itself is lovely and the staff was great. Just needs some sprucing up to call itself five star. We may be back, but will likely stay in a house instead.
A wonderful visit at a beautiful resort. Everything was first rate. We had a beautiful day on the beach, followed by dinner at the Ocean Club. The next day we golfed at Cougar Point. Great course!! Fabulous low country visit!!
This magnificent hotel wraps you in its quiet luxury and soothes your soul. Bedrooms are beautiful, the public rooms sumptuous and the hotel's location on the beach means you will never want to leave - if a sanctuary is what you're seeking.
5-Star service and large, beautiful rooms. Hotel and grounds are very nice. Easy beach access for walks or beach-cruiser rides. I was there for a business gathering in the off-season. This allowed for really reasonable rates. Be prepared for very expensive hotel restaurant prices ...you're a bit captive in the location. A wonderful experience and a lot of southern charm.
