When the Francis Marion Hotel first opened in 1924 it was the largest – and perhaps most luxurious – hotel in the Carolinas. Today, the 235-room hotel has undergone many refreshments to add modern conveniences while preserving the historical opulence. Rooms feature stunning harbor views, flat-screen televisions, cherry and dark wood headboards, customized marble topped vanities, and walls and furniture splashed in hues of smoky blue and navy. Unwind in the full-service spa for aromatherapy or hot stone massages as well as facials and exfoliating sea salt body scrubs. The Swamp Fox Restaurant and bar showcases jazz piano music and crafted cocktails, as well as farm-to-table entrees such Low-country catfish served with pecan and blue crab coleslaw or spiced-rubbed pork chops topped with South Carolina’s, Virgil Kaine bourbon barbecue.
In the Area
The hotel is situated about a mile from the cruise port, around a 15-minute walk to the South Carolina Aquarium. Take a stroll through Marion Square Park, or explore the Charleston Museum – just steps from the hotel. Shoppers can meander the sophisticated boutiques of the Shops of Charleston Place, or check out the Charleston City Market, which hosts local vendors both day and night for saw grass baskets, paintings, jewelry, and more. In the evenings, see what is playing at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center, or make a reservation at one of the newest restaurants in the city, Stars Rooftop and Grill Room. The sophisticated venue features sustainable seafood and steak dishes and a trendy rooftop lounge.
How to Get There
Our stay at the Francis Marion was prompted by a family wedding in Charleston. We found this hotel to be elegant, charming and comfortable. We had a corner room that was small, but very cozy and had views that made the room bright and cheery. I can't say enough about the staff, pleasant, cheerful and very accommodating. The location is perfect, near lots of shops and the fantastic food Charleston is known for. A good walk to the Market area and waterfront, but there is so much to see on the way, you won't notice it. Only wish we could have stayed longer, but then there will be a future visit to Charleston and most definitely another stay at the Francis Marion.
Location is good. So much for the positive....
Small rooms, minuscule bathrooms, noisy at times. Our room one night wasn't cleaned until the evening (and I had to call the desk) and we had to dress for dinner in a messy room. I would not stay there again.
Upon arrival your biggest issue will be parking, as it is very limited on the roadside/valet area and signage needs to be improved for the parking deck area. I was happy to see a Starbucks on the first floor for my coffee fix ;) At checkin we were upgraded to a suite, and we were very impressed with the size and layout of the suite. The only weird thing that made you question safety, was a step up to the toilet and shower landing area. We had to constantly be sure of where our feet were while in the bathroom because of that weird design. I am giving this place 5 stars because of the cleanliness, hospitality and terrific location. You can walk everywhere from King Street, and you never need to Uber to get to food, shopping, cold beverages or the historic market. We will be back here for sure.
