The Lowdown
Cley-next-the-Sea, an old port town for wool and grain, is home to The George, which overflows with charm and boasts a prime position overlooking the stunning marsh. The town is made up of picturesque and narrow, winding lanes carving their way through acres of salt marsh, peppered with the brightest colours and a stretch of beautiful, unspoilt beach. Imagine pretty houses made of brick and flint and a small village brimming with culture, local warmth and the lulling sound of the 18th-century windmill.
The founding place of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the hotel and the area are famed for their beauty and abundance of birds that flourish along the shingle beach and saline lagoons. At The George (very much a pub with rooms), seven of the 10 rooms look directly upon the reserve, making it the perfect retreat into English nature. An idyll for families, birdwatchers or romancers alike.
Rooms at The George are prettily appointed with splashes of colour that complement the simple traditional design.
