How to Get There
Stayed at this property last week in Hong Kong. Booked via American Express under fine hotels and resorts program. Also I have a Golden Circle Diamond Card status. At check in my reservation was all in order and it was confirmed that my room category was a Harbour view deluxe. Agent remarked that under Amex I was entitled to an upgrade in room category at check in, but as I had booked the highest category the hotel had there would be no upgrade. I was surprised that the room I had was the best in the hotel but went with it. Surely she must be trying a fast one - a Shang with no suites?!?
Now looking on TA I see reference to suites, much as I had imagined. Clearly the check in clerk didn't think me material worthy of such an upgrade - which tells you also the way in which she views the Golden Circle program and the Amex program.
Had access to the horizon club lounge - very nice. Buffet restaurant very nice for breakfast also. Nice room with a good view - just what I paid for.
Lessons to be learnt: don't expect anything from Shang's loyalty program or American Express fine hotels program.
First the pluses—lovely welcome, check in in your room, beautiful views from large picture windows, elegant room especially bars and restaurants, great breakfast.
The downside...mildew smell. We were taken to a very nice room with an overwhelming mildew smell. It was not a problem to change rooms but now that we’ve been in the second room for over a day the smell is in this room too. I suspect the fact that it’s been raining pretty much non-stop has something to do with it but I have to say in a hotel at this price point that’s very disappointing. We have two more nights here but it would a hassle to change so we’ll stay put but it does spoil the experience.
The Island Shangri-La for me has always been the best place to stay in Hong Kong. For the past few decades, every time I am in Hong Kong, I always stay at the Shangri-La & it has always been a home away from home in Hong Kong. While this Shangri-La property retains all of its old world elegance, it is clearly showing signs of age. While I was there, a leak sprung that completely soaked a couple of floors leaving the carpets damp & musty smelling. Although the leak was attended to quickly the musty smell remained for a couple of days despite all their efforts to dry it.
Although they have finally added key card entry to the rooms & have provided one charging cable, these technological additions fall short of what other five star hotels are offering. Had I been coming here for work, I may have been more annoyed at the room's technological shortfalls.
I was also disappointed to learn that their Lobby Lounge is only open until 10:30 pm on Saturday nights - we actually had to walk over to the Conrad Hotel's lobby lounge, which closes as 12:30 am to enjoy after dinner drinks. (NB the Lobster Bar is open until later but the loud music makes it impossible to have a conversation.)
Despite these drawbacks, the service remains excellent & it is still a wonderful & convenient place to stay while in Hong Kong.
I've stayed here regularly over the last 10 years or so. It's not the most 'on trend' hotel but the rooms are spacious and very comfortable and the service is always excellent. Bar prices aren't cheap but then nothing in HK is cheap!
Because it’s a Shangri-La, it is certain that you will not be disappointed.
The moment i stepped out of the taxi, the welcoming staff at the entrance immediately made a difference, they swiftly helped me with my luggage while I was still paying the fares.
At the check-in front desk, the service was quick, it didn’t take long to retrieve my reservation.
When I entered the room, the wide window was like a large picture hung on the wall, with fantastic views which made me sit by the window to enjoy the views, while sipping the jasmine tea still kept warm. Nice gesture indeed.
As I wanted to do some running, I went to the concierge who gladly provided the directions for a good running route starting from Kennedy Road to Bowen Road to the scenic mid-levels and back, and I managed to clock approximately 8km of good run on the route given by the friendly concierge.
It was a good stay no doubt. Location is good, right on top of Pacific Place, accessible with MTR Admiralty Station. Some points I would raise for improvements would be the rooms looked quite dated, some refresh would be good, and the lifts were rather long-waiting. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable one, would return to this hotel again when I m in HK again.
