Sofitel's signature l'art de vivre in a stylish sleep steps from the Magnificent Mile
French architect Jean-Paul Viguier and an attentive staff bring a touch of l'art de vivre to the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower hotel. The asymmetrical facade, dotted with mosaic-like patterns of windows, stands out in a city crowded with architectural gems. The lobby is decorated in modern art pieces and warm jewel tones. Service here is stylish too: Staff could be straight out of a Louis Vuitton ad.
Bed and Bath
The 415 rooms have an understated modern elegance with blond wood accents, abstract art and a muted palette of cream and white against deep burgundy rugs. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook postcard views of the city. The marble bathrooms, large by city standards, have glass showers and tubs.
Dinner at the hotel’s nouveau French restaurant, Café des Architectes, is a treat, though be sure to make a reservation in advance. Using seasonal and local ingredients, chef Greg Biggers marries French technique with American flavors in dishes like seared foie gras with a sourdough waffle, pancetta-apple crisp ice cream and pickled brussels sprouts. Start your evening here or at Le Bar, where an eclectic clientele perches on vibrant banquettes.
In the Area
Tap into Chicago's legendary music scene at Blue Chicago, a 15-minute walk away in the River North Neighborhood. Deep-dish pizza is an institution here. Sink your teeth into a cheesy bite at Giordano's, about three blocks from the hotel. In a city known for its architectural history, a tour is a must. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers year-round walking and bus tours and seasonal riverboat tours led by local certified docents. Millennium Park, a 24.5-acre urban escape in the heart of the city, offers events and activities all year, from concerts in the summer to ice skating in the winter. The Jay Ritzier Pavilion, designed by starchitect Frank Gehry, and the Crown Fountain, an art installation featuring two 50-foot towers with moving faces of Chicago residents, are highlights.
