Chicago’s Gold Coast glamour pad, with high-tech rooms and a much anticipated eatery
Opened in October 2013, Thompson brought a serious dose of style to the Gold Coast. The space feels like an edgy hideout from the Windy City: Exposed brick, timber beams and a roaring fire invite lounging on velvet sofas, while industrial finishings such as a glass and steel mesh staircase add the edge. In the rooms it’s all about texture, with peacock velvet seating areas, fur throw pillows and upholstered platform beds topped in tweed throws.
Bed & Bath
The 247 guestrooms walk the line between sophisticated and funky, with edgy photography and illustrations, a muted toffee and gray color scheme with pops of jewel tones, and low, sexy lighting. Even the “smaller” rooms are plenty spacious at 320 square feet, and they feature plush sofa-like seating near the kingsize beds. Techies will geek out over the bedside USB ports, Internet TV and the fact that every room has its own IP address. Simple white-tiled bathrooms feature large rain showers, Frette robes, makeup mirrors and Ren body products.
One Off Hospitality, the restaurant group behind Chicago megahits such as Avec, the Publican, Big Star and more, opened Nico Osteria. James Beard award-winning chef Paul Kahan designed the seafood-focused menu with housemade pastas and dishes like salt-crusted branzino with chanterelles and currants and smoked whitefish triangolini with sea urchin. Work it all off in the 1,000-square-foot fitness center, which is open 24-7.
In the Area
The Gold Coast neighborhood is known as a posh shopping destination, so you’ll want to check out the boutiques on nearby Oak Street, which is home to such brands as Prada, Tom Ford, Jack Spade and more. You’ll find department stores and even more shopping around the corner on Michigan Avenue. Gibson’s Steakhouse, located across the street, is a Chicago institution. If a celebrity is in town, you’ll most likely see him or her ordering a steak there. Flight 001, which is just down the street, is a fantastic travel shop featuring luggage, gadgets and anything else you might need for your flight home.
