Post-industrial posh hipster haven steps from Chicago’s best, shopping and nightlife
A $3 million renovation transformed this River North sleep from its motel roots into a hip 130-room boutique property. Playful décor abounds, including lava lamps in the small lobby and Lady Gaga and Rolling Stones record sleeves in the elevators. The post-industrial aesthetic carries through to the teched out (if smallish) guest rooms, which feature graffiti-style handprints on canvases above the beds, red lip decals glowing on the backlit bathroom mirrors, and giant zipper Pop art prints in the King Suite living areas as well as speedy WiFi, 46-inch flatscreens, and minibars with local sweets. The centerpiece of the hotel is the funky Berkshire Room, a buzzy, Chicago fave where bartenders will craft surprise libations on the spot--just pick your spirit, your flavor preference and your glass, and they'll work some magic. In the morning, ACME offers “Knock & Drop” delivery options, which include a thermos of fresh java, a copy of USA Today and a loud knock on the door for your wake-up call. As for everything else, you’re a stumble away from the best of Chicago’s River North bars, clubs and restaurants.
In the Area
ACME is mere blocks from Chicago’s celebrity chef outposts, including Frontera Grill from star chef Rick Bayless and Takashi Yagihashi’s Slurping Turtle. Just across the street is Pops for Champagne, a bar that specializes in all things bubbly. The downstairs bar, Watershed, serves craft beers and artisanal cocktails. Head a couple of blocks east to Michigan Ave (a.k.a. the Magnificent Mile), where you’ll find Nordstrom, Topshop and much, much more. Pop culture junkies will want to check out the nearby Broadcast Museum, which houses 18,000 square feet of television and radio exhibits, recordings and memorabilia. Allyu Spa, located along the Chicago River, offers a variety of services with an eco-friendly focus. Melt with the 60-minute Hot Stone Massage or the 75-minute Magnetic Skin Rejuvenation Facial.
