Freewheeling, neighborhoody stay in a 1920s Lincoln Park building with seasonal eats from a Michelin-starred chef
The historic 1920s building, which has played host to everyone from Al Capone to David Mamet, got a full makeover in 2012. The result is a fitting reflection of the neighborhood. Mismatched vintage drawers stack up to make a funky check-in desk, and cozy lounge chairs are upholstered in a patchwork of leather, floral and plaid. You’ll also find artwork by Chicagoans, both famous and undiscovered. The playful guest rooms also mix and match styles with chevron carpets, side tables reminiscent of vintage trunks, and industrial chairs upholstered in typographic fabrics. Art takes center stage, from headboards made from portraits to painterly pillows and a metallic balloon animal piggy bank (courtesy Jeff Koons), which guests can use to donate money to chartiable causes. Sixty percent of the rooms overlook Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park. Bathrooms are on the small side but include Lather Modern Apothecary products. Meanwhile, downstairs, Michelin-starred Paul Virant’s Perennial Virant draws a loyal following of locals with hearty seasonal fare, such as sweet pea ravioli with coriander, and duck schnitzel. In the summer months, the outdoor area fills up with brunchers sipping cocktails including the Wink and a Nod (whiskey, raspberry/rose petal syrup, grapefruit and egg white). The spacious rooftop does double duty as a yoga spot in the morning and a bar in the evening.
