How to Get There
Our fantastic night away at the Portal has prompted me to write a review whilst I’m still here. We arrived & drove through the beautiful golf course. Friendly, informative welcome from a lovely lady called Chrissie on reception- she proved to be a treasure, helping me with a sewing kit when my buttons fell off my dress! The bottle of Prosecco which was included in the deal was presented beautifully in our room. The room itself was large with a huge comfy bed & a large bathroom. We made our way to the bar & sat out on the balcony enjoying the view in the winter sunshine. There was a lovely friendly & helpful barman called Damon, for whom nothing was too much trouble & made our stay even more pleasant. Dinner was served later in the restaurant & was a pleasant experience even though the food was average. Nothing to complain about, just not amazing.
Breakfast this morning was cooked to order & served by yet another lovely member of staff, Victoria. The hotel is beautiful, the grounds a picture, but it’s the staff that make this place an absolute joy! They can’t do enough to help & there’s a smile at every turn. We didn’t use the spa, but I heard other guests say they loved the facilities. We paid £109 for bed, breakfast, bottle of Prosecco & a 3 course dinner. We were absolutely delighted with it all & will definitely be back 😀
We visited this hotel 10 years ago and left a 5 star review but unfortunately this visit wasn't quite as memorable.
On arrival we were met by the friendliest receptionist you could meet and she explained everything that we needed to know.
We made our way to the leisure facilities and were disappointed to find that both the ice room and one of the saunas were out of action, not the end of the world but with the pool temperature also been very cool it didn't make the for the best experience.
The hotel itself was lovely and we enjoyed a few drinks in both the main lounge and also upstairs in a cosy sports bar.
The menu offered as a guest staying on dinner bed and breakfast was very poor with very limited options so we opted to eat off the a la carte menu which was the right choice as the food was great.
We thought we would treat ourselves to breakfast in bed and ordered for between 9.30 and 9.45. After chasing reception because it didn't arrive we finally had it brought to the room at 10am....disappointigly it was not only late but stone cold.
We did mention this on checkout and were quite surprised to be told that this was because a new chef was working in the kitchen and couldn't keep up so was been helped by other hotel staff lol.
Overall a lovely hotel but when paying good money and not been provided with simple things like a warm breakfast means that we won't be in a rush to return.
Went here with a voucher deal. Hard to find in the dark but got there eventually. Lots of parking. Short walk over a bridge to the grounds and reception area. Lovely, friendly greeting. Massive room.. warm and comfortable. Evening meal was in the bistro and had a set meal to choose from. We both had hake in pickled onion batter as main meal with chips. Tomato soup was slightly salty. We went in the bar and that was nice. The decor and layout of the castle makes this place special... lots of staircases, seating areas make it an unusual place to stay. Breakfast, although nice, was a bit unorganised. The trays were always empty and took a long time to replenish. Tea and toast came after we had eaten. Things like that make a difference and it wasn’t even busy. But we made the most of it. I would recommend a stay here. The surrounding grounds are worth a walk around also.
Have stayed here a couple of times and had a great time. Bar area nice and comfy however this weekend must of been one of the coldest weather wise in a long time and due to this cold I was sat having a chill and a drink with my coat on. Bedroom was lovely and warm. Breakfast was good. Now down to the Christmas party night to our shock we found out we were being transported to the golf club house down the road to which none of is was impressed with due to the fact the weather was freezing and all us ladies were dressed in our lovely black evening dresses with lovely hair do's and no jackets as we did not think these were needed as we were led to believe the party was in the hotel. We were taken by mini bus to the club house where the room was freezing they had blower heaters around the room but they didn't help with the cold plus our table was near where they were bringing the food out and they must of been opening a door as we kept getting blast of cold air. The food was not good veg rock hard and the turkey Roulade was inedible.can honestly say have never been so disappointed with one of your Christmas parties.
The two star is for the fantastic breakfast with freshly cooked bread, a la carte menu and great size clean rooms.
Straight from the get go it was a little stressful. Received a email to confirm times for our spa treatment as I booked a weekend away with my partner. They had given us an allocated time which was the same as check in. They told us to call and confirm. I called, no one answered, I left a message no one called back. I called again and spoke to someone who said they didn't know why I received a email as those are the times, they are super busy so that is the only option. I changed my treatment as it didn't make sense to have a facial then go into a sauna straight after.
Arrived at the hotel a little early, couldn't check into the room so had to go to the spa and leave all our things there..went to the gym and then onto the treatments. After the treatment we was allowed to check in. So now we are in our bathrobes have all our belongings and luggages and suitcase and shoes, trapsing around the hotel in dressing gowns. I found the whole checking in stressful trying to carry everything having to use two lockers in the changing rooms (which half the locks do not work and a strong sense of sewage coming from them). Pulling everything out trying to get what we need and feeling rushed because of the treatment times. Anyway we are then informed that we have to make a time for dinner reservation and all they have is 9pm..not ideal for us we don't like eating too late.
So after all that we went down into the spa. It was dirty..as I mentioned the women's changing room smelt of sewage as did the aroma steam room. Around the pool water was everywhere, no staff going around brushing it away into the drains, towels left out..no one around to tidy up a bit. The whole area felt like a community swimming baths with a few added rooms..not pleasant to hang around in or very relaxing at all. We left after 25 mins.
After getting seated at 9pm we were not told that the desserts were a added extra to the prepaid meals included in the spa package. No biggie but it would have been nice to know. Secondly we had to wait almost a hour in between each course. They had run out of several things from the menu. There was no check backs with the food and I had to chase staff down to order another glass of wine and some water for the table..which was plonked down with no glasses so we had to get them from another table. By the time we was waiting for our desserts to come we were the second last table there. Everyone had left, even those that had ordered their meals after us. The table behind had already eaten and was just finishing their drinks. We however at now 11pm after 2 hours were still waiting on the desserts to arrive. At this point my usually super patient partner had had enough..he asked where the desserts were and they apologised saying they forgot to put it through. We cancelled the desserts..the manager apologised a lot said he was fairly new, took our room number and said he'll tell reception and make sure its off our bill.
We go to check out the next day and the receptionist had no idea, said she was not Informed of anything and apologised. She took the desserts off after including it on the bill.
From start to finish it was not a fun, relaxing experience, just shoddy service.
I would not suggest this place as a nice weekend away with your partner..there are plenty of gorgeous hotels with beautiful spas and great dinner service. Give this one a miss.
