- Taking a trip out onto Lake Kournas to admire the serene views
What To Know

- The hotel has direct access to the Blue Flag beach
- There are two swimming pools, but keep in mind that towels cost extra
The scenic island of Crete has a diverse landscape of beautiful golden beaches and striking rocky peaks overlooking the enchanting Aegean Sea; all of which can be enjoyed from the small fishing village of Kalyves on the island’s northern shoreline. Relax and unwind in this picturesque setting where culture and history are set against the magnificent backdrop of the ethereal White Mountains.
Kalyves Beach Hotel occupies an enviable position, with direct access to a long stretch of sandy Blue Flag beach. Inside, tiled flooring, wicker-style furniture, arched doorways and alcoves reiterate a Mediterranean vibe, and guests can enjoy indoor swimming, a mini-spa with Jacuzzi and sauna, an intimate outdoor pool area lined with sunbeds, plus drinking and dining options looking out to the sea or the Xydas river.
The large fishing village of Kalyves brims with Cretan character and its terracotta buildings and domed monuments pepper charming local walks. Nearby towns house historic attractions and stunning trails and walks in equal measure. Be sure to visit the laid-back old town of Rethymon for its glorious architecture, including the Sacred Monastery of Arkadi, or set out on a horse riding expedition, a sailing trip or a diving excursion to Elephant’s Cave.
How to Get There
Been in vacation on 2017.
Nice place, well kept and trimmed. We had wonderful weather and very good service from the staff, careful to every need we had.
Food was good and cooks had a good fantasy to rearrange meals.
Our last day the manager stopped us, pretended to know who we were, got wrong 3 times in a row and then tried to bribe us to give a good review here with a tiny bottle of wine (nothing special). Totally embarrassing: I wonder how staff could be so good with management so bad.
This hotel is a good choice if you want a quiet relaxing break, without any hassle.
The fully inclusive option is good value and if you dont want to have the bother or expense of finding a restaurant every night you will be well served by the unlimited and plentiful buffet meals, snacks and inclusive local wines and spirits. The evening entertainment includes some good quality music acts.
It is a good venue for couples and small children who are happy with small playgrounds and the beach but older children and teenagers would probably end up on their phones as there isn't really much for this age group.
There are some land trips and boat trips to break up the holiday , eg Knossos( quite a long day )and a olive oil factory , not really for young children though.
The hotel is very clean and the staff very pleasant and helpful.
We really enjoyed our week in Kalyves. Its a quaint little village/town that runs alongside a beautiful bay. The town itself has a good mix of tavernas, restaurants and shops without feeling too big or busy. Although i guess if you wanted livelier nightlife you might want to look elsewhere. It was perfect for us though.
The hotel itself is nice. Our room was a little small but as we only slept in there it wasnt a problem. The side view balcony was nice and looked over the beach and sea. The all-inclusive buffet was varied each day although of course over a week they did double up on some things which is understandable. It was always tasty though. The seating area outside along the river that runs into the sea was a really nice spot and we sat out there at every meal. I did think though that if we went back we would probably just go BnB as there are so many great restaurants along the beach you could eat at a different one each night. They are very good value as well with main courses being between 8-12 Euros.
The private beach was nice and always had enough loungers for the guests even though the hotel was full. The staff were also really friendly and the ladies at the front desk were always smiling and made us feel very welcome especially when we first arrived.
I do only have one negative comment and that is that the alcoholic drinks included in the all-inclusive were terrible. We are not fussy when it comes to drinks (!), but the wine was actually undrinkable and the beer was very watered down. I drank 4 or 5 pints one afternoon and did not feel any effects at all. As a result we switched to the paid for drinks which were fine. This was a bit of a shame.
Lastly, a big thank you to Illiana, the events/class lady. She was an absolute star and really kept us active during the holiday with fun yoga/aerobics classes and games. Not many others wanted to join in so it was the three of my family for most of the week! She is a real addition to the team and really added to our holiday. Thanks Illiana!
I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this hotel for a great stay on the gorgeous island of Crete and somewhere thats not too far from Chania airport.
We spent the most idyllic week at The Kalyves Beach Hotel in October. The weather was great, the sea was warm, the Hotel was clean, well organised, and the rooms were very comfortable. The beach was right on the Hotel site, there were plenty of entertainments available .The food was excellent , and a special thank you to the Restaurant manager, Mr Antoris Loukalis who catered for our every need, and welcomed us with warmth and enthusiasm every day. I thoroughly recommend this hotel as a super family destination.
My husband and I stayed here as all inclusive guests for a week with our two young children. The location is lovely, right next to a sandy beach with a nice little playground. The hotel room was adequately sized and decorated in light and fresh colors. Unfortunately the beds were rather uncomfortable and our double bed had two matresses which meant that when the kids climbed into bed in the middle of the night, one of us always ended up in the widening gap between the two matresses. We asked if it was possible to change to a room with just one matress on the double bed, but instead the problem was "solved" by them putting a folded third sheet over the "gap", which didn't really solve the problem. By the end of our vacation stay we were looking forward to coming home and getting a decent nights sleep and I had a really stiff, achy back. There was a good selection of food at every meal and the kitchen staff were helpful and sweet to the children. For breakfast some kind of spam was served instead of bacon and that felt unnecessarily stingy and brought the experience down. Our little daughter loved Iliana, the young lady who is in charge of the fitness activities. She couldn't wait for the mini disco sessions at night. If you ask our daughter, that was the best experience of her visit to Crete.
