How to Get There
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Metropol, which was in my bucket list. Firstly the amazing breakfast- the pistachio cake and babka were superlative, and the lightly smoked salmon and caviar wonderful. What a selection! (you lose marks for the tea bag and lack of fresh fruit variety though). Our room was large and comfortable and well appointed. Yes, the hotel is not shiny and new and sometimes that shows - but our stay was all the better for the sense of history that has been retained in this marvellous building. Please dont lose this ever.
Today we lunched at the Metropol Hotel Lobby Bar. Food and service were really good. It’s a beautiful venue.
Chicken Kiev was yum and quite reasonably priced for 5*
Sadly the Metropol Restaurant was closed. Next time.
We were a bit surprised at the cost of sparkling water bottle.
The first time I stayed in this hotel back in the 90's and was shocked as the rooms and service. This time I again, by chance, stayed in this hotel.
The first thing that immediately brought me back to the 90s, or even during the times of the Soviet Union, was the employee at the Reception desk, who demanded from me an internal Russian passport. He was not satisfied with my Russian international passport. For many years of my visits to Russia, I did encounter for the first time.
I saw a lot of advertisements that a major renovation was carried out at the hotel. The updated hotel website shows great new rooms. And how interesting it is to see that all this is just an advertisement ... The room in which I lived did not know any changes since the 90s. With the exception of Fixing the toilet white sealant and Fixing the floor self-tapping screws.
Most halls on the floors are half empty.
Previously, it was possible to put a plus, the hotel location. But now around a few 5-star hotels are much better.
The only thing I want to say thank you for is the excellent breakfasts and the wonderful SPA.
We absolutely loved our time in the Metropol. The hotel is beautiful, and has unique decor throughout. We were visiting for a special event, and the reception staff were especially kind and welcoming, upgrading us to a suite to recognize our event. Everyone was pleasant and professional, and Victoria in particular went out of her way to provide the extra touches that make a visit really special.
The breakfast buffet is as lovely as can be, with many Russian specialities, plus homey touches from other cultures to make everyone welcome. I was particularly impressed with the Asian dumplings and sides - so many hotels in Europe try to provide an Asian breakfast, and most are unable to deliver, but the Metropol captured it.
50 years ago they had a massive menu but everything was always off..but NOW what a change. Been bought out by a western company and the place is super. Only took lunch in the bar, but very impressed. Just a lightening tour to refresh my memory of the old days
