Two types of rooms

If you get confused by opposite opinions of other reviewers on the hotel’s rooms quality, here is the explanation - there are renovated rooms and there are “historical” rooms. The renovated rooms are just like the hotel’s photos - totally beautiful and comfortable with carerra marble bathrooms and great views. The “historical” rooms are horrible beyond words - dark, tasteless soviet rooms. At the reception we were explained that the updated rooms cost more but honestly we booked two rooms for about the same price and one turned out to be “historic”, while another one was “updated”. We didn’t complain because the updated one was a very cool comfortable room and we figured out we got a balance of good and bad.
Another thing that should be improved is the greeting process. There basically no doorman except for a very suspicious-looking KGB type guy that checks visitors bags for security reasons. This is a Moscow thing, there are supposed to be terrorist everywhere I suppose.
The entrance doors are heavy, there is a steep staircase leading to the hotel and ... no help. We saw older women dragging heave suitcases up the staircase with no help from anyone.
We actually had to ask for some help carrying suitcases when we arrived and the help was provided but I am not sure this is the case all the time.
Overall the hotel is good if you are prepared to deal with the uncertainty of the room quality and the arrival. But please call them in advance and clarify your expectations. The reception is very nice and will do everything to make the guests happy.

Excellent Experience

We enjoyed everything about our stay at this beautiful hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The general manager came over while we were at breakfast to introduce himself. Speaking of breakfast, it is served in an exquisite room with an enormous stained glass ceiling and a lovely fountain in the center. The buffet featured everything one could possibly want, from eggs made to order to salmon, meats and cheeses, breads and pastries, cereals, soups, a beautiful array of fruits, Halal food and Asian offerings. And a harpist played soothing music while you dined. The location was perfect and our rooms were clean, comfortable and quiet. Having read the novel A Gentleman in Moscow, which takes place at the Metropole, we asked for and had a wonderful private tour of the locations featured in the book. All in all, we were so happy we chose to stay at this historic hotel.
