Spacious rooms, but you can't control the room temperature
Reviewed 9 hours ago

Pros:
- Large rooms
- Plenty of amenities
- Historic charm, wine and cheese, milk and cookies, yadda yadda yaddda

Cons:
You can't control the room temperature. They have an antiquated central heating/air system. It was January but the temperature in the room was uncomfortably warm, felt like high 70s. The thermostat looked as old as the historic building. I kept turning the dial to a lower temperature until it got down to 50 F, but the room was still warm and dry. I tried to open a window to get some fresh air, but there was no way to open the windows. I called the front desk, who sent someone to my room. He just gave me a fan and was dismissive of my questions about the thermostat. In the meantime I searched TripAdvisor reviews and found that this was a common complaint, and that it would likely not be relieved by switching rooms. I finally fell asleep on top of the covers, but had a poor night of sleep, waking up several times.
I wish I had read the reviews on TripAdvisor more thoroughly before booking, so I would have known that other people have had this problem. Being able to control the room temperature is such a normal and reasonable expectation for staying at a hotel (especially the 3rd highest rated hotel in Winston-Salem) that I did not even assume it would be an issue. If I had known, I would have stayed at a chain hotel of equal value, which reliably have digital thermostats in each room that let you set the exact temperature you'd like.
I'm sorry to write such a scathing review, but judging by past reviews, management has known this has been an issue for some time. And really, I don't know how they can correct this problem given the old design of the building and the large volume of the rooms. If you don't mind sleeping in an extra warm room, this place should be fine. But if you are particular about room temperature, I do not recommend.

Great experience!

We really enjoyed the stay in this historic inn! It was very clean and the staff were very friendly. The location was nice and convenient. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this inn to anyone in the area.

Couples Getaway

Small, intimate inn (74 rooms) near Old Salem. We chose the standard room which had a comfortable queen bed, a writing desk, mini fridge and microwave, Large enough for a quick getaway. The inn has a lot of history and the manager is more than willing to discuss the history with guests. There is afternoon wine and cheese in their beautiful lounge, evening milk and cookies, and a great hot breakfast in a comfortable setting. The staff were very friendly. Old Salem is within walking distance via the Stroll Way. As a bonus, they have free parking. We had a wonderful time. We are going to try a suite on our next visit.

A HOME YOU WISH WAS YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN HISTORIC OLD SALEM
Reviewed 1 week ago

One Saturday, I decided I wanted to just get away from home, packed my bubblebath and set out....the warmness of the brick walls, plush interiors linens, and every room has its own unique character, some rooms have a split loft-style level....it's amazing! The next day, I strolled around Old Salem on foot, read all the placards that in a car you never have a chance to read the full text of, of the history of what happened here, and then had brunch at Willows! It was amazing to have a little bit of a stay-overnight getaway and see the things people travel to come see!
