How to Get There
This was our second stay at the Orchid, having initially stayed January 2018, enjoyed it so much, we decided to return. We were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary, and chose to book a suite on the Gold Floor, which is on the 6th floor of the North Tower. We cancelled a European Transatlantic 35 day cruise to be at the Orchid! The Gold Floor is a hotel within a hotel, with check in/check out with a Gold Floor concierge. You will be spoiled with delicious food included in the room charge with buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, appetizers and cookies served in the Gold Floor reception area, with comfortable seating for dining indoors or on the lanais overlooking the waterfalls, grounds and ocean views. I have dietary restrictions and the Fairmont is renowned for catering to individuals who need adjustments to menu offerings. How many times have I stayed at a different hotel chain with a difficult time trying to find something to eat and not offend or tax the hotel chef? Part of going on vacation is enjoying food and sampling the local ambiance! I got to personally speak with the Gold Floor chef thanks to Elizabeth, one of the great concieges on Gold Floor, about what I could eat for appetizers, desserts as I have trouble with fruit and spices. I was given a special meal for each day of our stay! I could eat and enjoy my food! We celebrated our anniversary at Brown’s Beach House, with the chef adapting an entree and a surprise dessert for me! Talk about pampering! We also tried out the new restaurant, Binchotan, a beautiful new Asian food offering at the Orchid. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous as I thought even with a chef’s adaptation, I could be ill from it! Hayato, the Gold Floor Supervisor, also notified the head chef, Justin, that I would need to perhaps have a special meal designed around my needs. Justin, I think, could be one of the most talented individuals I have met with impressive history of work that I was blown away with. He was waiting for our arrival. He had to be a mind reader, as well. His first suggestion for me, scallops with grilled shrimp in a citrus emulsion, asparagus and mashed potatoes sourced from another Orchid restaurant, was perfect!!! I ate every bite! My husband was very impressed with the meal he had as well. Justin also designed a celebratory dessert in honor of our anniversary! He stayed for a while chatting with us and he is very remarkable. We then had the manager of Binchotan stop by on our way out to ask how our meal was. We then spoke of our total bliss of our meal and how we would return to try more. We highly recommend this new restaurant. For those of you who like simpler food, the Hale Kai restaurant, by the stunning pool and oceanside makes hamburgers the old-fashioned way, with piping hot, perfectly seasoned french fries, that arrive in an original black box. Those traditional choices are to die for. I ordered those while lounging by the lovely pool and ordered the Orchid House Ginger Ale. Truly, the only thing I regret about this visit, short of checking out, was ordering these only once! Not next time! Then, room service: one of my favorite things to do on a vacation! A very cheerful lady would take our orders. I highly recommend their chicken nuggets with french fries, their fried chicken dinner, the mac n cheese on keiki menu, the coconut creme brulee, and this....if you order a frozen dessert, which my husband did, via room service, they will bring it to you once your entree has been eaten! They will bring your desserts when you are ready! Who does that? I have ordered ice cream at other hotels and watch it melt while hurrying to eat the main course! When you are done eating, you merely push a designated button on the tray, and staff know to retrieve it. Pretty neat and allows privacy. Our food arrived always hot and perfect, hard to achieve for room service! Our suite, a one bedroom on Gold Floor, was worth every penny! We had a full livingroom, half bath off the suite foyer with table, lamp and orchids, two lanais, a huge double queen bedroom with uber comfy beds, two huge walk in closets with mirrors, plenty of hangers, a bathroom fit for royalty, with double marble sink, plenty of storage space, separate soaking tub with shower and a glass enclosed private shower and toilet. Beautifully appointed. I especially loved the floor to ceiling plantation shutters for the bedroom sliding glass doors, with opulent semi-sheer drapes and very full shantung drapes. Two huge flat panel tvs to enjoy. At night, the turn down service included the bedroom tv being on with the channel, Scenic Hawaii, turned on, which features beautifully filmed footage with dreamy music of the major Hawaiian Islands. I was blown away by it and it set a relaxing end to the day. Speaking of relaxing, I was a devoteé of the spa’s Waterfall 80 minute massage, having enjoyed a few during my last stay at the Orchid. The waterfall massage is unique to the Orchid. Who wouldn’t enjoy a massage in an incredibly designed and appointed thatched hut perched over and around the beautiful waterfalls? The waterfalls, a natural sound barrier for the resort, are stunning and feature beautiful and fragrant flora and fauna surrounding them, with koi fish, among others, swimming in the pools and lagoons of the hotel. In many of the huts, there are built in windows on the floor, so while your back is being worked on, you can see the fish and even flower petals and light reflected in the water. The huts have beautiful ceiling fans and have built-in ventilation, which means you will never be hot! Tropical breezes, birds singing, and the waterfalls magic were the reason I had a massage every other day during our 10 night stay at the Orchid. In addition, the Beauty Salon manager trimmed my hair perfectly as it had needed an adjustment. Seriously, there is no finer spa, in my mind, anywhere in the world. I have compared other massages at other hotel stays, or cruises, for that matter, and they come up wanting. I did receive a precious hand-written and waterfall hut illustrated thank you note from one of the masseuses, Shauna, who I had developed a rapport with last January. It was one of the most precious notes of my life and I will treasure it. Try out the incredible pool with pool staff that offer to get you chairs set up and wait on you. So, to finally come to the end of my review. There is something for everyone at the Orchid. From Duke, with the air taxi that greeted us at Kona International, with an infectious “Aloha, so glad to see you! I have been watching your flight progress”, to the baggage handlers saying, “Aloha, so glad to see you again, Mr and Mrs Janelli”, to his happy escort to the Gold Floor, giving us a chilled bottle of champagne and chocolates, to seeing the staff of the Gold Floor, Hayato,( who coordinated before our stay our Luau tickets, air taxi, restaurant reservations) Elizabeth, Chris, among others, to housekeeping who knew our names even if we were on other side of floor, and their greeting of “Aloha”.....seriously......all of our dreams came true at the Orchid. We chose not to leave the resort during our stay. There was no desire to leave. We had everything we wanted. The Orchid is breathtaking, yes. But it is her OHANA that make her heart......you will see many familiar faces there year after year. Staff are genuine, happy, and want you to be happy. Who would not love being spoiled and walking around the resort grounds with hibiscus and plumeria petals falling to your feet during the day and dazzling sparkling stars at night to marvel at? My husband and I will return. We consider the Orchid our second home, a tropical paradise filled with loving and caring staff, who we miss as much as our place there! Mahalo, Orchid!
I picked to stay in this hotel for our 10th anniversary and it did not disappoint. Room service is on point, the staff is so nice and welcoming. The rooms are kept so clean, they come to clean it at least twice a day if you let them. I was surprised at this because even Aulani don’t do this kind of on point room service. They have a nice quiet beachfront, that is safe for children as the current isn’t that strong due to it being a cove. You will see lots of fishes even on the shallow area. They also provide you a shuttle service that let’s you get to the foodland farms where you can get food that’s way cheaper than the hotel food (poke bowl for 6.99$). But there is also the Brown’s deli which is a reasonably priced food option on the property. The breakfast is quite pricey but you expect that in places like this, there is so much food! But for the price, you can get brunch somewhere else outside the property if you have the time and don’t want to spend as much. You are in Hawaii, good food is easy to find! Anyway, the pool is heated and huge we enjoyed it a lot, especially at night when we got the whole place to ourselves. Over all would love to come back to this hotel if we ever come back to the Big Island, it was such a wonderful experience. Big bonus to me is seeing the Hawaiian green sea turtles just visiting the beach as they please, you just don’t get that kind of peaceful ambiance in Oahu. Will definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to find some peace and relaxation in the Big island!
I took my company (a group of 58 people) to the Fairmont Orchid on Big Island. Overall I had a terrific experience. The rooms were very nice and I found the rates to be reasonable. We also hosted a banquet dinner there. We worked with MewLan Seto, their Catering & Conference Services Manager, who was very knowledgable and helpful. She also helped us arrange meeting room space to host company meetings throughout the day. The food at the hotel restaurants were also extremely high quality. Strongly recommend this hotel for both individual and company retreats.
