How to Get There
We chose the Hotel Portofino Bay as we were traveling over spring break and concerned with crowds and long lines at USF and IOA theme parks. Getting the express passes as a perk of this property was a big factor in choosing Portofino.
The theming of the property was very nice, and a large open courtyard around the bay itself was a nice area to lounge around.
The room was very relaxing, with comfortable beds and buttery soft bedding. This is one of the quietest rooms I've even stayed at, with hardly any hallway or neighboring room noise (the leaf blowers at the pool started promptly at 8:00am, which could be heard).
The bathroom was spacious, with dual vanities and lots of towels and towel hooks. The shower had good water pressure/temperature. The layout of the bathroom is not very good for a family of 4, as it's all in one space- it would be better if the toilet was sectioned off, or the sinks in a separate area.
The restaurants and bars at the property were very good but very expensive, so we usually ate elsewhere. The Starbucks was excellent- efficient and friendly staff.
The hotel staff was friendly, though often in the background. When asked for information, they were always helpful. Bellhop staff was especially helpful.
The pool was very nicely laid out, lots of chairs available. The citrus water was a welcome addition. the water was warm in spite of cooler temperatures.
The water taxi service was very good- the security was quick, and we never waited longer than 5 minutes to get to Universal. With longer lines in the evening going back to the hotel, it was a pleasant 15 minute walk.
Overall, this hotel was a great stay, and proved to be worth the extra splurge for the express passes at the parks. The hotel itself was busy but did not feel crowded.
Arrived at 1 AM only to be told there was an 'engineering' issue and I would have to be located to another hotel for the night. It was not comforting to be told that our family would put on a wait list for the next day. First we were offered the Sapphire Resort for the night, but then told my husband, son, and I would be moved to a Hyatt 20+ minutes away by the convention center. Transportation and Hyatt costs for the night were covered, which I do appreciate. I was also told that the transportation arranged would take our baggage to the Loews Portofino hotel and us directly to Universal Park so we could take advantage of early park entry (the big reason we wanted to stay at this hotel) the next morning but that was not the case. We were transported back to the Loews Portofino and checked our own luggage in and then walked to the park. Loews did provide early morning park access to us, but we didn't have the ability to come and go to our room as we had planned on, since we didn't yet have a room. Morning manager on duty was straight with us and told us hotel was indeed 'overbooked' and that is why we were sent to the Hyatt. We did not hear from the hotel until almost 4 PM on what was suppose to be Day 2 of our stay at the Loews Portofino Bay Resort that we would indeed have a room for the remainder of our vacation, but with the stress, our fun getaway was already disrupted beyond repair.
Room at Loews Portofino Bay Resort was pleasant with the best perk being able to walk to the Universal Parks and take advantage of early park admission. Did receive a gift basket with a note stating something to the effect that sometimes the hotel overbooks. Way below par with other Loews properties and customer service I have experienced. I had already prepaid one night's stay. It seems reasonable that if one pays over $500 a night for a pretty standard hotel room, that better treatment is expected. Very disappointed in Loews and in Universal. I guess there is a reason that people refer to Disney as the happiest place on earth–the Disney Resorts never displaced me or my family.
The hotel was just okay. Restaurants were just ok and the service was pretty terrible everywhere but the pool. The lifeguards were amazing and attentive. The room was nice but there was a giant stain on the carpet that looked like no one took the time to attend to it. Most of the people who worked here acted like the didn’t want to be at work or be in the service industry
Stayed here with my family between Christmas and New Years 2018, as our home base for visiting Universal Studios and Disney Animal Kingdom. Overall it was a pleasant experience - nice property, decent conveniences, good family pool. The service was excellent as well.
If you’re visiting Universal Studios the convenience can’t be beat: shuttle boat direct from the dock at the hotel to the park and CityWalk, with a solid selection of restaurants and things to do. Also, as hotel guests we had free Express Passes (akin to the older Disney Fast Pass) and early park access one morning - beyond critical to avoid the increasingly insane lines at most park attractions.
Downside? We found the experience a bit “bland”, missing the hard-to-define Disney magic feel and so many little unexpected touches that you tend to get at the nicer Disney properties elsewhere in Orlando. Not a major knock, but something that’s missing as they try to compete with Disney options.
This hotel is very nice, styled like Italy. The rooms and common areas are very clean. The check in process took longer than expected (30 minutes). Also the bed pillows were not very comfortable, all too soft. But aside from that everything was great. Dinner at Trattoria deli Porto was very good, and convenient after a day in the parks. The breakfast buffet there was exceptional, and convenient before heading to the parks. The water taxi service was a huge timesaver, and worked great. Overall worth the money if visiting Universal Parks.
