How to Get There
Staff is very friendly and well trained. There are obviously a lot of changes, short shifts and rotations which keep service fresh and neutral.
Pools are nice, but there are limited chances to swim laps.
Rooms are clean, they show their age here and there (showers, sinks) but well maintained.
The music can get very annoying, Very monotonous in the public areas.
Food in the lounge is ok, not of very high level, but consistent.
Non complimentary drinks are very expensive.
Very nice grounds.
We stayed at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel for quick and easy access to Universal Studios and it was great. The rooms were very clean and the beds were fantastic. Very nice property and I would certainly recommend staying there. The water taxi was convenient and lots of fun.
This was an awesome stay. The resort was beautiful. Our room was right by the water taxis and they were always there when we needed to go to the parks or come back. We used a texting service to ask for towels, ask questions, report a TV problem, ask for the valet to bring our car, book dining reservations. It was available 24/7 and responded immediately. We literally asked for towels and they were delivered within 5 minutes. The bellman brought our suitcases with us to show us our room - nice touch. The resort was awesome, It was also awesome to have Unlimited Express Pass - we were able to ride every ride we wanted and some of them multiple times - 7 times on the Hulk - LOL.
We ate at NBC Grill during our stay and had Cindy as a waitress. This was our first day at Universal 5/20 it was my son's birthday and she made our meal. She knew exactly knew when to come to the table. She made us laugh, she gave us great tips for the parks, and made us feel pampered. She was phenomenal.
My advice for food is to not eat at BICE for the price the food was not worth and honestly not the greatest service for this level of restaurant.
We will definitely stay at Portofino Bay again next year.
Overall, we loved our stay and the hotel and pools. Very lovely! The courtyard with boats floating on the lake felt very European. It was like being in Europe with no long plane flight! Towels that had pocket for beach chairs were very luxurious! Pool entertainment was fun plaing trivia. Chicken sandwich and burger at pool were delicious, but pina colada pricey at $12. Loved beautiful live opera music on the plaza at 7:30! So classy! We really enjoyed the hottub with the waterfall. 2nd pool was serene and peaceful with nice music playing. My favorite thing of all was that a pool attendant brought us a cool, damp, lavendar scented washcloth! So refreshing and delightful!
We stayed 2 nights. Room was not serviced on first morning. Housekeeping knocked to inquire if we needed anything. I said no thinking she was asking about soap or towels. All day beds were not made. At 5:00, I requested from someone in the hall to remove trash as we had pizza box and other trash from previous evening. We checked in at 2:00 but were told room wouldn't be ready till 4:00. They asked us to show identification at 2:00, then again at 4:00 for both of us. We could not get cell phone service while on property even on the plaza. Had difficulty getting hot water in shower. Also no tv signal on 2nd morning. Son came to visit and had to pay $39 to park for 3 hours.
All in all, we really enjoyed our visit.
This place was amazing. If you stay here upgrade to the club rooms. Breakfast and diner is included along with free beer, wine, water and soft drinks. Well worth the extra price. There are so many activities to do here, we were never not doing something.
