How to Get There
Rooms were clean with modern decoration but showed their age as did the rest of the resort. They’re attempting to make updates which was evident by the sound of nail guns and saws while laying by the pool. The poolside music helped drown out those sounds though. Food at resort restaurants is highly priced (about $15 for a cheeseburger). Best bet for quick and cheaper eats and drinks is the Emack and Bolio’s Marketplace. They have lots of grab and go options. Resort location is convenient to the Universal parks and City Walk (just a 5 minute walk). I have stayed at the Portifino in the past and find it to be a nicer resort. Pool area is surprisingly nicer there too. As a side note, our shuttle ride to and from the resort was not the usual Universal Resort shuttle. It was a shuttle that said Escot on the side and was not as nice as their usual shuttles. It had a side emergency exit window that was not latched and would swing open when the bus leaned. Seemed like a safety issue to me since it was right next to where people were seated.
You can’t beat the location of Hard Rock Hotel to Universal. Staying at the resort provides you with fast passes to rides and an extra hour admittance to Universal. Neat place and vibe. This trip I had some issues with maintenance of room and getting our room cleaned. Otherwise, I have stayed there every year for the last 10 years.
My wife and I stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago and simply loved it so decided to pick it to stay at for our 10 year wedding anniversary and whilst we did still love it there were some things that we found had gone down in there standards compared to the previous stay.
First off the good things...the beds are comfy, you get express pass as part of staying here which is a real bonus to have for the parks, the decor is good, they offer a good selection of Hard Rock merchandise in their rock shop, the staff are friendly and above all else the location of this hotel is excellent for the parks. The television in the room is a good size and has a good selection of channels available meaning you will not be bored after a fun day at the park.
Now to the negatives...the housekeeping standards are not as good as they should be at this price point (we had a recycle bin not emptied on one of the days, rubbish taken out and put on the bed but not then removed by the cleaners - the rubbish was individual items not in the bag), a piece of plastic remained on the floor throughout our entire two weeks stay which indicates they either did not hoover or were not doing a thorough job. The housekeeping also came to check the room had been cleaned at about 6pm on more than one of the days which is a silly time to be doing this as you should be inspecting when the cleaners have just completed their rooms. The Kitchen restaurant has changed menu and compared to the previous one it is not as good as it used to be which is disappointing but is still a good standard of restaurant overall. This hotel is not cheap but with its location, the express pass and overall quality it makes sense however the shop for getting some food and drink is also expensive and fairly small meaning the costs keep adding up. The hotel lacks a Universal Studios merchandise store which I find a bit weird when you are part of the Universal Studios complex.
Overall this is a nice hotel but based on what I have seen the standards are slipping which is hugely disappointing and I hope that they can change this up soon and keep this place as somewhere which is well worth staying at.
