How to Get There
I like to summarize with "positives" and "could do better, so I will do that below. Family of 3 (couple + 14y.o. son) vacationed here week of July 8th as Marriott Bonvoy members.
The Good (+)
-Pool were nice, refreshing, and rarely were they packed so bad you couldnt swim (still lots of people swimming), nice to be able to "just get in and cool off"
-Rooms were not newly decorated but new enough. Rooms were nice, 4 star.
-Staff was awesome. No complaints here. We didnt have special needs, and tend to blend in well, so we didnt ask for anything out of the norm. Very positive on the staff there.
-Restaurants were good, a little pricey, but not awful. Food was to ideal temperature, nobody got sick, and service was good and on time. Perhaps the best meal we had was the final dinner room service we ordered. The Southern Fried chicken sandwich with fruit and caprese salad was delish!
-Ingredients coffee bar was serviceable. Nice folks, its Starbucks coffee, but didnt have the flair of a true Starbucks pop-up. Maybe think about branding it as a true Starbucks pop-up?
-Parking was ok. We valet parked half the time because there weren't open spots in the "close" lot out front. We didn't use the underground garage at all, cant speak to that. Likely burned $50 in valet gratuity all week. The other half there were spots out front in the free lot.
-Property was landscaped immaculately, beautiful palms cared for daily, insect free decks, and the place was clean overall. Pools cleaned daily, garbage cans were emptied regularly, no complaints there.
-DJ or live act of music was a nice touch. You could always hear some sort of music playing outside (even from your balcony) from 11am- 10pm. As a music fan this was nice.
-Spa, my wife started the vacation with a pedicure. Priced high, but appropriate for resort pricing. We then did the couples massage 2 days later. Again, pricey but nice. Clean facilities and nice staff.
Areas for improvement (-)
-Pool chairs were extremely limited. The large pool had really one row of chairs only, around 80% of the pool. ALL, I repeat ALL of those chairs were spoken for by 830am. People would wake up, grab a coffee, then simply throw a towel down and go back to their room. Some wouldn't show up until noon, but had the chairs "reserved" by the placing of a towel on the chair. I am not sure how you would monitor this, but not cool. If you didn't get a chair by morning, you were hard pressed to find a few in the afternoon (we would need 3).
-Beach chair/umbrella rental was price very high. And, the chairs only recline so far, you cant truly lay flat. $80 for 4 chairs/2 umbrellas, for ONE DAY. I thought that was a bit much. They mention a discount on day two, but the cost of day 1 stung too much. We only took that hit once :)
-Pool towels (yes, the yellow ones) were not soft at all. I liken them to coarse grit sandpaper. Not good. I get you are turning over hundreds of towels per day, but towels were unbearable. Fortunately, we brought nice over-sized soft beach towels, and used the yellow ones for pillows.
-Resort final bill, we checked out Friday. It is now Sunday, and still havent seen a final bill. No bueno. Would like to see the damage asap, haha. Small gripe, but not sure why it is taking so long to reconcile. Hmmmmm.
Overall, we would consider a stay here again. I think HHI is a wonderful island. It's definitely upscale, but we enjoyed the anonymity here. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, not likely the place for you (the Westin). This was middle to upper class families, all day every day. It was nice to see so many families having fun. Thanks Westin!!!
Our room was on the 3rd floor - not a problem - it was a little bit of a walk to get there! But once we did - very nice, clean and a great view of the pools. We did have an adjoining room where for a bit we could hear a crying baby - but its the summer and everyone is on vacation so how can you complain! Parents need a vaca too. The outside bar, View 32, was very nice and my husband enjoyed it. We didn't spend a lot of time at the hotel as we were there to golf - but enjoyed the location. Next time - plan on staying longer!
My family just checked out this am. We upgraded our room during our stay to a suite only to find out the floor plan/room we were told we were paying for was not in fact what we got. We were told we were getting the presidential suite (right above the lobby per the girl) and instead got an executive suite. No issue bc the size was fine but what didn’t sit well was that we were sold “A” for a price and got “B” for the same price. When we brought this up getting our new keys we were told we could have “B” for the same price or stay where we were. We were also told that the presidential suite would never go for that upgrade price, as if I should of known that. After 2 days, I asked to speak to a manager as it wasn’t sitting well with me how it was handled. I told the manager I wanted to speak to them directly instead of writing a review. They did offer us a credit to spend on our last day or a surprise gift but we declined as we weren’t going to be around. I would of rather them deduct that gift from the bill. I ended up having to walk away bc my daughter was fussing but my husband was told that the manager on duty would speak to her manager and they would follow up with us. He left it by telling her to do what they thought was right. No one followed up with him. It appears they felt good about it all. Side note - I’m not looking for anyone to follow up with us now. A few other times we went by the front desk and asked questions about kid activities. No one knew anything and told us we could go by the kid room and ask or call from our room. I stay in a lot of Marriott hotels and have never experienced such a lack of caring for customer service. On a bright note, the guys who run the luggage/bell station are fantastic and the concierge was very helpful.
Amazing customer service. The restaurant Staff was very pleasant and very helpful. Breakfast was delicious. The hotel location was perfect, the beach was clean and beautiful and the pool was excellent. The golf course was very very nice, beautiful and very affordable at $61. Teenager friendly, there are plenty of fun activities for children.
We've been to the Westin in Hilton Head a couple of times, at differing times of the year, and each visit was excellent. The Westin is the last hotel along this stretch of beach and it is a very peaceful and quiet area. You cannot go wrong; the grounds are very well-groomed and the rooms are comfortable. We had a room that overlooked the pool area and ocean, and it was a spectacular view. You can enjoy the restaurants around the pool, or relaxing at the beach; everything is right there. Driving distance to everything you need in a relatively quick trip. We are looking forward to returning to the area this month.
