Service leaves MUCH to be desired

Simply put, this resort doesn't have enough help, and enough experienced help at that. On the day of check-in, rooms that were guaranteed to be ready by 2:00 were not ready until 9:30 - as in 9:30 P.M. When we complained, we were simply told that "it's a very busy time of year."

The next morning, we were surprised to see the same room service carts and pizza boxes that had been in the hallway at 10 P.M. still present at 9 A.M. Breakfast was ok, but for $22, I expected more. We had a mahi sandwich for lunch. It was also ok.

The beach and pool are lovely, but expect to pay for everything. For example, two beach chairs will run you $40 for the day.

We were at breakfast/beach/pool from 8:30 until about 2:00. We got back to our room to find that housekeeping still had not arrived. There is only so much time that we can spend in the sun, and within 5 minutes of sitting down to take a rest, housekeeping was knocking at our door and asking to come in. This is unacceptable. When people are out of their rooms for over five hours, these duties should be taken care of.

In the end, the room was fine, but it's a very standard hotel room with absolutely no bells or whistles. Not being able to check in until late at night really left a bad taste, and especially since all levels of management really didn't care.

There are many places to stay in Hilton Head, and I suspect that many of the glowing reviews on this site are likely not real reviews. I would not stay here again unless we were given a fabulous deal. But in that case, management would tell us repeatedly, "Well, remember that you were given a good deal, and it's the only reason you are here." And that's really why I am writing this review. We had legitimate complaints about the service we received, and the response of management was to make us feel small, like we mattered less than other guests. Mess ups happen, but treating some guests better than others - that's unforgivable.

Started Off Unsure - but like it

When we got there our Oceanview room was not exactly as advertised. We tried to move rooms but were unsuccessful. Anna, at the front desk did an amazing job making things right. She gave us complimentary breakfast and drinks. She was awesome.

The location of the hotel is amazing, easy to the beach. The food was fine, the hotel advertises 3 restaurants but it is really only one with 3 names.
The rooms are spacious but you have to look over the balcony to see any ocean. OceanView is not accurate.

We are used to condo life in HHI so it was a change for us, Also, please note the rooms do NOT have refrigerators so you need a cooler for any items you want to keep cold.

Average at best

Trip Adviser peeps were wrong on this one... my relaxing vaca turned into disappointment from day 1. Let’s start with the bell hop staff who not only fail to say hello or greet customers but advised us to keep our luggage in our car until we got our room because they had run out of room in storage. Next encounter, front desk who laughed when I asked what type of view my room had and told me I had views of cars and parking lot. When asked for a better room he told me it would be an extra $50/night-which after talking him down I settled for additional $30/night. The room with “ a view” was obstructed by a huge tree, in a musky smelling room that was water bug infested and only had a pull out couch for my kids.
Next stop, the bar converted into a breakfast stand which displays an array of coffee lattes and chai-only to find out upon ordering neither item available just brewed coffee and no plain bagels. Severely under stocked -available breakfast average at best-eat elsewhere!
Time to relax at pool-good luck finding a chair or an attendant to help you-they hand you a towel and your on your own. Pool crowded and noisy with screaming kids. Pool bar service was awful! Waiter kept forgetting our order and complained that service was slow because they were short staffed. Not to mention-poorly stocked like the rest of the hotel-no mojitos ( d/t no mint), no nachos and one bartender trying to juggle it all. I complained to manager of food service who was nice enough to comp me one day of drinks/pool snacks and assured next day issues would be resolved... but they weren’t:( during a busy spring break week you would expect them to be better staffed and stocked-this was not the case!

Housekeeping staff also didn’t know how to say good morning and my request for turn down service to assist with the pull out couch was only accommodated 1 out of the 4 nights we stayed. Room cleanliness was average at best.

On a positive note, grounds surrounding hotel were beautiful and self parking was free. Bike rentals were available on premise but just like everything else in low supply. Management did text me twice to see how my stay was going and were responsive to issues.

Will definitely be back in Hilton Head but sadly, not to the Sonesta. If you are looking for ultimate, care free relaxation with a warm staff in a well run hotel-look elsewhere.

This is a fabulous choice for a fun vacation, meeting location or whatever your travel involves! The property has a very casual, beachy feel with a professional touch. The cuisine is awesome especially the Sunday buffet. The rooms are clean, bright and very large with a comfortable feel. Most importantly, the staff is awesome. They work very hard to make sure your stay is amazing. If you are headed to Hilton Head don't miss out on a great opportunity to enjoy The Sonesta!

One of the best hotel stays I've ever had
Reviewed 23 hours ago

I am not one to leave reviews unless they are REALLY excellent or REALLY terrible. But my stay recently at Sonesta Hilton Head Island was deserving of a review. One of the most important things to me when I travel is the service at the hotels I stay at. Let me tell you, the staff at Sonesta HHI did not disappoint. Not only is the hotel property stunning, and in a perfect location on the island, but the staff seemed to go above and beyond for us at all times, in all departments. I'd like to specifically call out Lucas and Jed at the front desk who helped us on multiple occasions, no questions asked... and Josh at the pool bar who was the most friendly and knowledgeable bartender. He even offered to drive us to the Savannah airport knowing he was headed that way himself around the same time! We also had to wait a long time for dinner one night, and without us asking we were comped for most of our food. At the end of the day, we just really felt at home here and I would go back in a second!! And for the record, this was my second time staying here and the first time was no different. Can't wait to come back!
