How to Get There
I've stayed here twice. Once in December 2017, and again in December 2018. This review covers both but focuses on 2018 for the issue with noise.
First, the good (and there's plenty of good):
It's a beautiful property, with amenities galore. Golf, dining, spa, pools, walking trails, and convenient walking distance to Kierland Commons for the great shopping and more restaurants. The staff is courteous and helpful. The rooms that I've stayed in are clean, well-appointed, and spacious. Plenty of up-to-date features, such as USB ports by the bedside and on the desk and dresser. Fast (relatively) wireless internet.
The Scotch Whisky Library is amazing. The bagpiper each evening is a treat. The beautiful fire pits and outdoor spaces to relax and enjoy the scenery are everywhere. The pool (which was closed during this particular trip) is really nice as well. Meeting spaces for those on business are very nice, with both large and small spaces for various setups. So what could be wrong?
The bad: If you enjoy rest and relaxation you should probably consider another property. This place can be VERY noisy. The most important advice I can give is to make sure you ask for a room that doesn't overlook the main outdoor courtyard. I had major problems with excessive noise from that area late at night and had to complain to the front desk twice in three night about it.
The problem arises because of the way the hotel is built. It surrounds the courtyard on three sides and the noise seems to be amplified by the setup. It would be fine if the hotel had some noise rules in place that they enforced. But when you have people in the courtyard late at night screaming at the top of their lungs (yes, they were exceedingly drunk) and the hotel does nothing to stop it, you have a major problem. You don't pay the kind of prices these top resorts charge to be treated to the equivalent of a drunken fraternity party at 12:40 AM. This is unacceptable, period.
I had to go down to the front desk to ask to be moved to another room, facing away from the courtyard. I was assured that that could be done, but the front desk manager (Kyle) who assured it could be done also said he didn't want to inconvenience me further by having me move, and that he would, instead, make sure the issue wouldn't arise again. So when it happened again the very next night I was not happy. This time, however, someone did manage to get the partygoers to settle down and go inside at 10 PM. That's late, but not unreasonable. But when it happened a third time the following night I went back down to the front desk again. This time it was around 10:30 (I'm estimating here).
Adult fun is expected and I enjoy the courtyard at the Westin Kierland myself, but to allow guests to become excessively loud and create disturbances is unacceptable in any hotel of this level.
I will not return to this hotel and I will discourage my company from returning either.
Same flights, same itinerary as the last trip and something was just off this time around. The breakfast buffet wasn’t as good, the beds and pillows weren’t as comfortable and my biggest complaint would be all the people smoking around the entrances. If you like walking through a cloud of smoke every time you enter or leave, then this is the place. Also, closing the water park in December for maintenance is sort of a mystery and I’m sure they had their reasons. I will definitely think twice before booking here again. The golf course was in excellent shape and the only highlight this time around.
Beware of special packages at this hotel. I booked a spa weekend with my daughter here when we were shopping for wedding gowns. When we checked out they had charged me for every service that was supposedly included in the package. This was on top of getting almost no sleep because of the raucous and loud party in the next room. Four calls to security yielded no relief whatsoever. We offered to change rooms but were told this was not possible. Don't waste your money here.
Hubby and I enjoyed a couple days at the resort. Beautiful hotel overall. Ideal location with shopping and dining steps away. We were excited to stay on holiday weekend to enjoy the Westin Wonderland. Was disappointed with beverage offering from the “Santa cart”. $14 for a small cocktail with little alcohol in it even though the menu outlined several in the drink. They should have called it a shot and not a drink. The girl in the elf suit kept complaining and wanted to be finished. Not what you want to hear. The light show was amazing. Kudos to the PSAV team!! Loved the golf course and the staff other than the elf. We will stay again for sure.
Disappointed that the kids pool is closed till 12/20 as we came here specifically for that. Giant hotel with updated but older style rooms. Close to Kierland Commons. Hotel is fine, I just expected more. I will give a shout out to their fast and free internet and commendably soft toilet paper. Self parking is $16/day though.
