How to Get There
My wife and I spent 5 days/4 mights at the Canyon Suites resort-within-a-resort at The Phoenician, and hosted four family members at the Phoenician resort itself, all in celebration of a major birthday of one of our number. We played the golf course and enjoyed the resort restaurants, the spa, and the ambiance. (We didn't try out swimming in the pools, but they are numerous, attractive, and provide many choices of venues.) By everyone's account, the level of service and responsiveness of the staff at each facility was outstanding. The gardens and setting, at the foot of Camelback, are beautiful and restful. Everything within the resort is within walking distance, though the staff will whisk you around in a golf cart or Mercedes SUV upon request. Scottsdale itself provided a great range of off-premises restaurants, and other golf courses to visit, and the Arizona weather in December beats most other USA venues. Our 2-room, 1 & 1/2 bath suite in Canyon Suites, about 1200 sq ft, with outdoor private patio facing on the garden and the mountain, was comfortable and well-appointed. The bed (mattress and bedding) was top notch and comfortable. The bath was large with a capacious easy-to-enter tub; my only disappointment was the lack of a true "rain shower" head in the glass/marble shower stall.
We stayed here for our wedding anniversary, and we were looking for a place with beauty, excellent personalized service, friendly staff, a top notch spa, things to do, and a generally romantic atmosphere. We got what we wanted. When we arrived, our Ambassador (Jacob) welcomed us warmly and showed us to our room, while providing very helpful info and a very pleasant demeanor. It felt nice to hear, "Welcome Mrs. xxxxx" as I walked up to his desk, as if he already knew me. I loved the personalized feel.
We had a beautiful room with a spectacular views of a golf course and the city. We also were able to watch the sunset from our balcony, with an unimpeded view. It was absolutely breathtaking; no words can describe how surreal it was to watch the sunset in what felt like complete solitude, high above the city. The only thing I would like to have had, would be jets in the tub. We even got some complimentary bath salts near the lobby, and the smell is heavenly. Very relaxing and therapeutic. The bath salts with the jets, would have been amazing. Oh, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Best sleep we had in a while.
The grounds were incredible. From the perfectly-manicured landscaping, to the mountainside dining, swimming, and spa, the views did not disappoint. There is a lake with swans and water fountains. There are waterfalls and a cactus garden. There was a waterslide and a children's playland. There were gorgeous sculptures of Native Americans around the property, and the fountain in front of the lobby was amazing. Lots of flowers in bloom, very colorful. The grass was very green. Beautiful place for a golf course.
We took advantage of the shuttles from the Canyon Suites to the Phoenician. Most were via golf cart (fun), and one was via a luxury SUV. We waited maybe 30 seconds for the guy to get there to give us a ride. And this swift service is consistent. We used this service a handful of times, and it was always a super short wait. Even the valet was the shortest wait I've ever encountered. Less than a minute. Service is prompt and always done with a smile.
There was a nice pool on the Canyon Suites premises with these really large and brightly-colored cabanas and comfortable chairs with umbrellas. The pool was heated to 84 degrees. There was also a nice and large hot tub at the perfect temperature. I do have to say that there were more kids on the property than we expected. The hot tub was overrun by kids (who were being supervised by the same adult, so no staff broke any rules by allowing the kids), which is not what you want in a romantic trip. There were also a lot of kids screaming in the pool (even babies crying). We love kids, but this was not romantic, so...we looked for an alternative and the Phoenician did not disappoint. There is an adults-only pool. I cannot put into words how gorgeous this pool is. And peaceful. The service was impeccable. As soon as you get to the pool, a staff member will help you find a good spot and then set up your chair(s) and umbrella for you. Your pitcher of water will never go lower than half full. The food was delicious. The drinks were strong and tasty. If I could change one thing about the adult pool, it would be that it is accompanied by an adult hot tub. All hot tubs on the property are family tubs.
The spa was very luxurious. We had a 50 minute couple's massage, and we both agreed that it was our best massage ever. Lacy was my therapist. She is top notch, highly qualified, and she only talked when necessary during the massage. She listened to my needs and answered them perfectly. She used the perfect pressure and was very thorough.
The roof top pool was an oasis of peace. Delicious food and drinks, and very personalized service. Our waiter was Gennaro. He really went the extra mile for us. My husband wanted a drink that was served at the adult pool - that was not on the menu at the spa pool. Gennaro went to the adult pool, got the ingredients, and then had our drink made - all within about 10 minutes. I couldn't believe how quickly my husband had this drink that wasn't even on the menu.
As part of the spa, there were classes on subjects such as various forms of yoga and meditation. We didn't get to take the classes, but they are available.
All in all, this was the perfect experience and place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I have about 700 photos which basically took themselves, because this property is so beautiful. Will definitely be back again.
This is the second year we have spent a few days here before Thanksgiving. It is a beautiful property. The canyon suites have plenty of room for our family of four. The room is spacious and has a full and a half bath. This year we had a view of the golf course. It is a short walk to the main hotel where you have access to all the pools. However, the pool at the canyon suites is very nice. Our only complaint is the complimentary breakfast-more options would be nice. Overall, we had a wonderful and relaxing trip.
This hotel has only about 60 rooms, which allows for a unique level of customized service. You know you're in for a good stay when the valet welcomes you by name as he opens the door to your car as you pull up. We found the staff to be incredibly friendly and empowered to make our stay very special. The front desk agent sent a wonderful surprise up to our room that was entirely unexpected, but much appreciated and more unique than anything we've experienced before.
The pool area is beautiful, right under Camelback mountain, and the pool staff is super friendly and attentive.
The one thing that was underwhelming was the free breakfast buffet. We didn't actually end up taking advantage of it, since the warm dishes always had meat in them. But since it's free, I won't ding them for it. Just be warned, it's not as great as some of the other reviewers here make it sound.
We also popped over for dinner to Mowry & Cotton. While the service was great, the food there wasn't very vegetarian friendly either. There were no vegetarian entrees (aside from salads), and even some of the vegetable sides had meat in them.
Food aside, great property, and the staff makes it truly amazing.
My cousins and I spent a long weekend here 'just to connect'. We felt so well treated in a suite like they have here. A King and two queens....breezeway (with a 3rd bathroom!) in between propped open so we could move back and forth with ease. Incredible service, both at breakfast buffet, car service and restaurant recommendations. And the time we spent at the spa pool --- incredible. We will return!
