Vacation

The resort grew on us as the week went on although our first impression was shaky. We were immediately turned off by the sales pitch to join before we had even had a chance to see our room or the resort.
On a positive note, the staff at the resort was amazing. Initially we were disappointed that we needed to take a shuttle versus walking, however, drivers like Randall and Julio quickly changed that as they were so helpful and friendly. They were always right there, happy and added a personal touch to every ride or need we had. We left feeling we had made new friends.
The pool bar tenders (especially Christopher and Yelssong) were very attentive and friendly too.
Was not a fan of the black sand beach and the size of the beach, however the snorkeling from the beach was good.
Food was good but would have been nice to have a few more restaurant options. The private food and wine pairing we had at Portofino by the wine steward was excellent and something we would do again.

Nice but wouldn’t go back

The best thing about this resort is the staff. They are so friendly and helpful and are a credit to Secrets. The food in the a la carte restaurants is good when you can get in.
The food choice in the buffet restaurant, the market cafe is certainly not 5 star.
There seems to be a two tier system all inclusive at this resort, there are so many corporate dinners, corporate get togethers, corporate evenings etc where areas of restaurants or the resort are closed off to the rest of the guests. The spa pool area which is the quietest part of the hotel is constantly being closed off during parts of the day for “an event”.
This is so frustrating as the main pool area is so noisy with large groups of people playing games & music.

This resort is not the peaceful paradise & intimate & romantic setting that they claim and that I expected it to be.

The RIU palace Costa Rica was a far better resort for treating every all inclusive guest the same.

Honeymoon at Secrets
Reviewed 2 days ago

We just returned from an amazing honeymoon at Secrets Papagayo. The resort is beautiful. The property is hilly but we had no problem walking around and the shuttles are easily accessible if you need them. We had a plunge pool junior suite that overlooked the bay. I enjoyed the plunge pool but it was probably a one time 'splurge' for me. It was really nice but we just didn't spend enough time in the room to make it worth while. The room itself was very nice and clean, wasn't huge but was plenty spacious.
We enjoyed all of the restaurants. Aqua was probably our favorite. The skirt steak was fantastic. We had great service at each restaurant and all the food and drinks were very good. We did the romantic dinner one night and the romantic breakfast the last morning. Both were good but you have to choose from a pre-selected menu in advance. food was fine but not a lot of options. I enjoyed the regular room service breakfast more than the romantic one.
We loved the beach. The black sand is different than what we are used to but it was very cool. the water is very clear but that's hard to tell from the shoreline. the dark bottom doesn't give the water the turquoise look of the white sand Caribbean. We took a jetski tour and the just on the other side of the bay was white sand beaches. The tour had sea caves and we saw sting rays, got off the jetskis and saw monkeys. it was very cool.
We did 3 excursions with Herson Segura. I first read about him on here before we made the trip. All of my communication with him was through Instagram @hersonsegura. All of his tours were private which was awesome. You get to move from place to place at your own pace rather than a big tour groups itinerary. One day We did an adventure day with zipline, horseback riding, tubing, hot springs and waterfall. Another day he took us took to another huge waterfall and an animal tour where we saw sloths, monkeys and all kids of wildlife. the last tour we went to the Arenal Volcano area. Did some hot springs and the La Fortuna waterfall. it was a blast. He totally customized each trip for us which is why we saw so many waterfalls. Each day he took us to cool local spots for lunch. We had a blast and Herson was a pleasure to deal with. I will never book through a large company. Herson was far and away better than they big guys could ever hope to be.
We had a blast at Secrets. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and I would recommend it to anyone. We cant wait to come back! Pura Vida

This was everything I had hoped for!

The food, the service was amazing! The grounds are beautiful although, Rey hilly and tough to walk. The do provide shuttles all around the property. The pools are gorgeous. We had a little frustration with check in; we arrived early and they kept telling us it would be just a little longer before we could get into our rooms. It ended up taking 4 hours.

What an awesome holiday.

I'm not the sort of person to do reviews, but I have to say this is one of the best and relaxed holidays we've ever had.
After reading some reviews before we went I was a little apprehensive about the place, but honestly had nothing to worry about. We flew out with tui from Gatwick and forgot what hot weather felt like. Arrived at the hotel to be greeted with cool fresh smelling towels which was gratefully received. Handed a glass of bubbles and a swift check in was done. Was transported to our room in a lovely cool air conditioned van with our luggage. We were in room 450 which was one of the highest rooms. But the view from our room was spectacular. The hills were ok walking down to the main areas but we got the shuttle buses back as was very hot to be doing things like that. The buses were always there when we needed them.
The scenery is absolutely stunning. The hotel do a fab job of keeping this lush as it's a very dry country. We experienced a few forest fires in the distance but goes without saying for such a hot/dry country.
The food and restaurants were amazing. But one little niggle we had was the big corporate event of 150 people that arrived in our second week. Yes this was annoying as they were very loud, and the restaurant choices were scarce as they needed them for the event, but the hotel did try and keep it as separate as they could and keeping the event away from the normal guests. Once the event was over after a few days it was lovely and quiet again. We did struggle a few mornings with sunbeds but it was a great excuse to get up early in the morning to reserve as gave us all day to spend round this beautiful pool and make the most of our holiday.
Rooms are lovely, not overly big but comfy, beds were so comfy I woke up so refreshed. Pools are cleaned regular and they were so lovely to go in when really hot. Jose kept us well and truly stocked up on drinks at the pool bar. Always got a huge smile to go with it. The entertainment team are fab. Big thumbs up to Carlos and I really loved Mary, what a character she is.
Did some lovely trips. Got to see the real beauty of Costa Rica.
All in all what a fab place to stay. Lots of birds round the pool to keep you entertained. Certainly no complaints at all apart from the event that happened. Its really what we needed. Only worry I had for the full 2 weeks was which restaurant to go to next 🤣
Super duper place for a seriously chilled holiday.
A week after arriving home, still got the holiday blu's
Cant wait to go back.
