We didn't want to leave!

Our stay at the Azul Ocean Club was amazing. We were a little unsettled on our drive there, wondering what kind of place would be so remote, but when we arrived, everything was amazing. The villas are beautiful and spacious, and I spent a lot of time on the balcony hammock. The grounds are well-kept, and my kids liked watching all the iguanas, swimming in the wonderful pool, jumping waves on the beach. The staff was terrific, too, and we especially enjoyed watching World Cup soccer every morning with the breakfast crew. (The breakfast, included with the cost, was just right each day.) This was a great end to our fabulous vacation in Costa Rica, and we didn't want to leave!

The Costan Rican Fawlty Towers (with its own Manuel)

If you want a secluded, beautiful location and a good laugh then this is the place for you but for an overall decent option I would avoid staying here.

The pros:

Secluded location away from the hustle of normal life.
Wildlife everywhere - numerous iguanas, birds, and we even had a monkey come up to us.
Mango trees all over where you can pick your own.
The stunning beach
The gym.
Reminder of the classic John Cleese comedy!

The cons:

Not many staff around - I should mention the kind of caretaker guy is the best. Very helpful.
The pool is open 8am - 8pm yet after dark (6pm) you cant use it as the pool lights are broken.
Pool bar - there was rarely anyone around to order a drink.
Jacuzzi - broken again
I had to use my mobile at one point from the pool to call reception to get someone to give us a towel as there was just no one around.
The breakfast - lots of options but only a few small options are included on your booking rate which states “free breakfast”. Please note this is not enough to feed a child. Plus you have to pay extra for juice which is madness at breakfast.
Air conditioning - our unit broke down in the middle of the night in 30 degree heat so had a bad night sleep. Next day they said they had fixed it and the same thing happens in the the middle of the night so we just changed rooms for the sleep.
Rude staff on reception in the mornings (not Manuel).
The road to the hotel is terrible - make sure you have a 4x4 or you could be in trouble.

If I had to choose again I would decide to stay in a hotel in San Junaillo or Marbella.

Day visits only!

My family lives close by so we come for the day sometimes and use the pool. The pool is really nice and cool for hot days. They charge $25 for the day and that money can go towards drinks or food. The food is pretty good (good ceviche and fries are yum) the staff is friendly and the ocean is near by so you can here the waves crashing. The property seems well taken care of and clean. If you were to stay here I would suggest renting a car to get around. San juanillo (fishing and snorkel tours) and Marbella (surfing and a huge beach) are about 10 mins drive. Nosara and playa geones are great little towns and are about a 30-40 min drive. You could do lots of good day trips from here so do your research. If you wanna be somewhere quiet and away from a lot of tourists then this is your place. My only complaint would be the drinks. They don’t seem to use real fruit in the pina colada which would make it a lot better. 🤓

Beautiful but too remote
Reviewed 3 months ago

This hotel is as isolated as you can get. It would be great for couples and adults who want a quiet peaceful break, with privacy and isolation. It has a Beautiful gym, Kind staff, Nice pool with swim up bar and Private beach. You can see monkeys in the trees and iguanas on the ground. JJ, Kevin, Frank and Randolf are great, kind and helpful.
There are many reasons why this hotel didn’t work for our family.
1. Ocean is not suitable for kids. Waves are massive and the undertow too strong to swim safely.
2. The hotel includes breakfast, which is very minimalistic so kids end up ordering items that are not offered on the included menu, therefore you end up paying extra for breakfast.
3. It is unlit dirt roads from any main roads and far from everything. You need a rental car or taxi to go anywhere and taxis run about $90-100 each way to the nearest city of Tamarindo.
4. The villas are clean but there are no separate bedrooms for any privacy. It’s a set up with a king size bed and multiple “day” beds or sofa beds in one big master bedroom which his open to the downstairs living room. The water-pressure is poor.
5. There is only 1 restaurant with 1 waiter on the premises for breakfast and dinner – and a pool side restaurant for lunch, anything else requires taxi or rental car. Our party of 10 was overwhelming to them.
6. $90 one way to nearest city and we would have needed 2 taxi’s to accommodate us with at least an hour advance notice to come for us.

Because of these reasons, we ended up checking out and leaving early, losing 2 days we paid for and paying an additional 2 days closer to Tamarindo and we are grateful to Vesa Tours for providing us transportation to a new hotel free of charge which would have cost us over $200.

Awesome relaxation

Great place to relax and recuperate from the stress in life. Very quiet surrounded by coconut & mango trees, lots of palm tree too. Fantastic service, friendly staffs. Delicious seafood and a must try Costa Rican breakfast with plantains. Beautiful pool and walking distance to the beach. From your bedroom, you can hear the waves and feel the breeze. Our suite also has an enclosed outdoor shower. A wonderful overall experience
