It’s lava at first sight at La Fortuna’s Arenal Manoa Hotel, which directly faces Costa Rica’s famous Arenal Volcano. Not hot lava, mind you – there haven’t been any eruptions since 2010. You will, however, be able to see where the lava cooled along the outside of the volcano, as well as where thousands of trees grew up around the former lava rivers. These lush, emerald-colored slopes are clearly visible from the hotel’s restaurant, the spa’s outdoor treatment tables, the hot-spring pool area and Jacuzzis and your junior suite’s private terrace.
Get a closer look at the sleeping giant on a tour of surrounding Arenal National Park. Let the staff of the property arrange a tour – one that takes you so high up that you’ll be able to see the Arenal Lake and maybe even lava rolling down, before visiting some of the local hot springs, if you like. But don’t forget about the other incredible natural attractions that there are in the region, either. Visit the hotel owners’ dairy farm, climb through the labyrinthine chambers of the Venado Caves, soar through the canopy, bird watch at the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, or embark on a day trip to the phosphorescent waters of the Rio Celeste.
Your spacious, modern, air-conditioned junior suite affords a, truly epic view of the Arenal Volcano; better yet, you can admire this view from its very own private terrace’s rocking chair. Also included are a satellite TV and, in your bathroom, a small garden to remind you of the lush flora outside.
La Saca Restaurant’s fare samples from both national and international cuisines, with eggs and chicken from the adjacent dairy farm. It can be paired with lighter bites, along with drinks, from the two wet bars – one for each pool area, that is. All three eateries and drinkeries come with the best side possible: a marvelous view of the majestic Arenal Volcano.
When the views of the volcano aren’t relaxing enough, a therapy at the spa should calm you in no time. Pick from a hot-stone or Swedish massage, or mix it up with an aromatherapy or reflexology treatment or a facial. Several romantic options are on the menu, if you’re traveling as part of a couple.
The property is nearly in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, which is visible throughout many common areas, your room and the Jacuzzis and pool areas – including one that’s fed by hot springs. To get a closer look, visit the surrounding national park, which features impressive lava fields; the staff will set up a tour, with an optional excursion to additional hot springs. Day trips to the phosphorescent waters of Rio Celeste, canopy tours, expeditions through the Venado Caves and tubing adventures on the Toro River can also be arranged. The hotel owners also manage a dairy farm, whose cows you can milk and sheep you can play with, on a separate guided tour.
How to Get There
We stayed here for one night and were sad not to have booked for longer. The rooms were spacious and set in lovely gardens. We had cocktails by the pool and were joined by a racoon stealing the pizza dough :) Dinner at the restaurant was very good with the flaming volcano desert a real highlight. Sadly we did not see the volcano due to clouds.
This was our first stop in Costa Rica and definitely didn’t disappoint. The hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful (and so vast!) and a particular highlight has to be the pool with a swim up bar. All the staff are absolutely lovely and so helpful. Really nice rooms with great bathroom. Also the attention to detail was great - loved the different towel animals we found on the bed every day! We never wanted to leave. Would recommend to everyone.
We stayed here on a family vacation and could not have been more pleased. The grounds and views were beautiful. The accommodations were excellent with comfortable rooms, air conditioning, and hot water. We spent the days taking advantage of nearby activities, like zip-lining, but looked forward to returning to the resort to enjoy the beauty.
The hotel (resort) is situated on beautifully landscaped grounds. The rooms were amazing and spacious. Skylight in the bathroom with plants growing between the shower and the bathroom essentials. Food was well presented and, of course, the birds were breathtaking and abundant.
We were pleasantly surprised when we reached this hotel as our next accommodation as it was nice and private, very well air conditioned and we could flush the toilet paper!! There were so many birds flying about and although it was cloudy during our stay, we could at times see most of the volcano from our room! The staff at reception were extremely informative and helpful when wanting to book trips and explore the area. The restaurant for breakfast was a delicious buffet with traditional options as well as pancakes, fresh fruit and continental options. There is a happy our in both of the pools, one from 4pm to 5pm, the other from 5pm to 6pm. We tried the hotel restaurant La Saco which was fabulous, would definitely recommend, but a bit pricey (worth it). We also had a pizza at the pool restaurant which was more than enough for two people to share and freshly cooked. The resort felt very safe and we enjoyed being able to park our car in front of our suite and come and go as we please.
