The Lowdown

It’s lava at first sight at La Fortuna’s Arenal Manoa Hotel, which directly faces Costa Rica’s famous Arenal Volcano. Not hot lava, mind you – there haven’t been any eruptions since 2010. You will, however, be able to see where the lava cooled along the outside of the volcano, as well as where thousands of trees grew up around the former lava rivers. These lush, emerald-colored slopes are clearly visible from the hotel’s restaurant, the spa’s outdoor treatment tables, the hot-spring pool area and Jacuzzis and your junior suite’s private terrace.
Get a closer look at the sleeping giant on a tour of surrounding Arenal National Park. Let the staff of the property arrange a tour – one that takes you so high up that you’ll be able to see the Arenal Lake and maybe even lava rolling down, before visiting some of the local hot springs, if you like. But don’t forget about the other incredible natural attractions that there are in the region, either. Visit the hotel owners’ dairy farm, climb through the labyrinthine chambers of the Venado Caves, soar through the canopy, bird watch at the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, or embark on a day trip to the phosphorescent waters of the Rio Celeste.

Your spacious, modern, air-conditioned junior suite affords a, truly epic view of the Arenal Volcano; better yet, you can admire this view from its very own private terrace’s rocking chair. Also included are a satellite TV and, in your bathroom, a small garden to remind you of the lush flora outside.

La Saca Restaurant’s fare samples from both national and international cuisines, with eggs and chicken from the adjacent dairy farm. It can be paired with lighter bites, along with drinks, from the two wet bars – one for each pool area, that is. All three eateries and drinkeries come with the best side possible: a marvelous view of the majestic Arenal Volcano.

When the views of the volcano aren’t relaxing enough, a therapy at the spa should calm you in no time. Pick from a hot-stone or Swedish massage, or mix it up with an aromatherapy or reflexology treatment or a facial. Several romantic options are on the menu, if you’re traveling as part of a couple.

The property is nearly in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, which is visible throughout many common areas, your room and the Jacuzzis and pool areas – including one that’s fed by hot springs. To get a closer look, visit the surrounding national park, which features impressive lava fields; the staff will set up a tour, with an optional excursion to additional hot springs. Day trips to the phosphorescent waters of Rio Celeste, canopy tours, expeditions through the Venado Caves and tubing adventures on the Toro River can also be arranged. The hotel owners also manage a dairy farm, whose cows you can milk and sheep you can play with, on a separate guided tour.

Wonderful hotel in a fantastic setting
Reviewed 23 hours ago

Accomodation is in separate bungalows & rooms are bright, modern, clean & spacious. We had two very comfortable large double beds & a massive shower room. Each room has a beautiful garden & sitting out area. The breakfast buffet was second to none, everything you could want for breakfast & more and the restaurant is open sided so a perfect vantage point for spotting the varied wildlife around the hotel site. The hotel is set in beautifully landscaped grounds & has a hot thermal pool as well as normal pools. The staff were all friendly & helpful. All in all, a wonderful place to stay with a fabulous view of Arenal volcano.

Great Resort, But this is a Tour Group Hotel and not for Couples
Reviewed 2 days ago

A great resort layout, really good grounds particularly the pools and superb rooms ( the comfiest beds) but they’re catering for tour groups. There isn’t really a pre-dinner drinks bar and dining is a big disappointment. Breakfast never changes and “local” fare which isn’t to everyone’s taste, dinner is better but when the tour group is in the staff are overwhelmed - long story short badly undermanned (the restaurant ladies work hard but the male management doesn’t). Pizza at the pool is the best meal but you’ll still have to wait. Shame, could be so much better.

Loved It

We were a family of 4 (2 grown children) and we loved this place. Upon check in we were upgraded to one of their biggest rooms and for 4 adults that was great. Each room is super private, with an outside sitting area with a sliding glass door. With the larger room at least, the bathroom was super large with a skylight and green plants. There is the usual safe and plenty of closets. Also there is a sink outside the bathroom which is always helpful with 4 people. The included breakfast has many good choices of foods and fruits and an omelette station, There is a nice pool and also an area that has a hot springs like pool. Both of these places have drink happy hours at different times for 2 for 1 drinks. The property is pretty big, but for those that do not want to walk, they do have a shuttle. For a nice base to visit the Arenal area we found this hotel to be a great option and would highly recommend it to anybody staying here. Enjoy!!!

Tropical paradise

This resort provided an intimate and tropical location for our second honeymoon. Each one floor building only houses two units, each with their own deck overlooking the volcano and lush foliage. It was very private and quiet. There was one main restaurant with excellent food and views. There were two very nice swimming pools and one pool bar. The staff was excellent and addressed every need that we had even allowing us to charge the cost of a taxi to our hotel bill. The only downside is the road that you must travel to reach this part of the country. It is very twisty and not in good shape. You either need a strong stomach or some Dramamine. However, it is definitely worth the drive. This is not a party resort. So if that’s what you’re looking for I would suggest another resort. We found it perfect for what we needed.

Nothing but good to say here. Beautiful rooms, gorgeous pool, exceptional staff. Wow! That volcano view never grew old. Stunning! Loved the villa rooms and the walking around the paths. Wished we would have stayed longer! Pizza at the pool fire oven was delicious!
