Absolutely Fantastic

We stayed here for four nights and we were not disappointed! From the moment Ernesto met us at the airport to the moment we were dropped back there again, we were made to feel very special. We stayed in a villa with a Jacuzzi which was worth the extra splurge. Beware that if you cannot do without TV and internet in you room, you will find it hard going. For us, it was nice to get away from it all. Food was very good and there is happy hour 3-4.30 if you are feeling thirsty! There is also a small mini market a short bike ride away that you can get to on one of the complimentary Matachica bikes. It sells staples plus and some alcohol if you need to stock the fridge up.

There is a regular Matachica boat to San Pedro through the day if you need to get into town and the concierge is n absolute star if you want to arrange excursions etc.

Overall a big recommendation if you are looking for a relaxed yet sophisticated stay in this part of Belize.

Great, except for the mice.

My husband and I stayed at Matachica for our honeymoon. The resort is fabulous, intimate and beautiful. Our beachfront casita was adorable and very charming, except for the family of mice who stayed with us as well.

The first morning we woke up to see two mice running across the rafters in the ceiling, and also noticed mouse poop on the floor. We immediately informed the staff who sent the cleaning crew and maintenance crew to address the issue. They put several mouse traps around the ledge of the ceiling in response. Over the next several days the mouse traps were mildly effective, which we knew by the loud trap noise that would wake us up every night, following by squeaking. (The best night was when the trap actually fell to the floor!). The major problem we had, aside from their very existence, is that we needed to inform the staff when there was a dead mouse in the room waiting to be disposed of. We would leave in the morning for breakfast or the pool, providing ample opportunity for the staff to check the mouse traps, and return several hours later to find that the staff had not checked the traps and instead relied on the guests to let them know when there were dead mice in the traps. The staff never offered any condolences or apologies for the daily mouse discoveries and we tried our best to be discreet for their benefit. It didn’t seem like it was a priority at all to take care of a rodent issue inside of the rooms, especially for such a nice place. Instead, we felt like we were a nuisance requesting the staff to get rid of the mice in the room we were staying in.

So if you chose to stay here, be prepared for the authentic thatch roofs to house some additional guests while you stay. We do recommend renting the golf cart to go to Secret Beach or walking south down the beach to enjoy an evening at Rojos.

It’s a wonderful secluded place perfect for getting away from everything. The service is pretty good , specially from the boat and beach boys, and everyone is friendly and polite. However, it does shave some glitches that if improved could make this place even better. First, if promoting a n adults only resort they shouldn’t allow kids at the restaurant, this happened on three occasions. Second , the band shouldn’t play after 9pm specially if there are divers waking up at 4’30 am the next day to go to the blue hole. The spa and massage were pretty good, but ask if someone has an allergy before putting eucalyptus oil on them. The coffee is terrible (Folgers) and the espresso even worse, for the prices they should serve something better .
Finally , I had an incident with a wake up call, but they compensated me with a free dinner. Would come back again

Mini Moon Vacay
Reviewed 1 month ago

My husband and I came to Belize for our Mini Moon. It was close enough to home to easily get to but far enough that it felt like a vacation. The staff were extremely friendly, I can't say enough great things about the staff! The rooms were super clean and comfy and Matachica was super cute! However, I was really bored. There is no nightlife whatsoever, no entertainment.... I think the bar closes at 10 pm. We shut it down every night at like 9:30 pm. You could go into San Pedro by renting a golf cart for $40 but the roads were awful and there were no lights at night - a bit sketchy and I heard the bars shut down at 12 in town as well. I don't think I would want to drink and then drive 30 min. back to matachica in the dark, in a golf cart, on a bad road, so we just stayed at the resort to be safe. There were no TVs in the room either, so we basically went to bed every night at 10 pm. There is a seaweed issue as well, so you can't get in the water. The pool is nice but I live in Texas and can get in a pool pretty much any time I want so that wasn't a selling point for me either. The 2 best days were not spent at the resort; one was snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine reserve and the second was Secret Beach. If you are the type of person who is happy doing nothing and be around no one and go to bed really early, this is a good place to visit. Looking back, I am pretty disappointed for the price we paid and what we got.

Best getaway I could have asked for!

I took my mother on her first trip in several years for her birthday. When booking this, I decided two separate bungalows was best (for down time) for both of us. We stayed in the Kiwi and Banana huts... they were GORGEOUS. Best decision I ever made. The resort surpassed my expectations exponentially. The service from airport pickup, the spa treatments, reef snorkeling excursion, dining - all was beyond perfect. The staff at Matachica provided the best service I have ever had, and I travel internationally often. By the time we left we were on first name basis with everyone and it felt like we were leaving family. I will be returning again within the year with my spouse. 5 stars all around.
