Overview

The Review

Chabil Mar takes advantage of its location at the end of southern Belize’s Placencia Peninsula to show off a very different side of the Caribbean coastline. A short, 30-minute flight from Belize City, the resort is inspired by its little-explored tropical setting, infusing it in every aspect of the 22-villa property. The friendly staff is there to welcome you at Placencia Airport, just as cool towels and sweet icy drinks greet you on arrival at the hotel — perfect aids for the transition to beachside relaxation.

The 22 one- and two-bedroom villas are uniformly spacious at 850 and 950 square feet, respectively, and all are individually decorated in a sunny tropical style with bright local artwork and Belizean wood. {“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2930/prop-97802-1339096649-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The on-site Cafe Mar restaurant serves delicious Belizean cuisine in a breezy setting.”}All the modern amenities are present, including kitchens with dark wood cabinets, separate living areas, free WiFi and laundry facilities. Best of all, the villas have private verandas overlooking the grounds or the Caribbean Sea.

Sun-seekers and romancing couples make up the majority of the guests here, and most are content to spend their time by the pool or on lounge chairs along the private 400-foot stretch of sand. The beautiful sea is impossible to resist for too long, however, and kayaks are available for guests. Head out along the beach to the mangrove lagoon in search of the resident manatees, who appear as laid-back as you’ll feel while paddling past the shoreline.

Back on dry land, the on-site restaurant offers both an extensive menu and multiple dining options. I enjoyed a breakfast of golden fry jacks on my private deck and lunch of shrimp ceviche near the pool. Any evening meal, whether it’s simple seafood chowder or grilled fresh lobster, is romantic when it’s specially prepared out on the pier.

The remote setting, at the end of Placencia’s skinny peninsula, can feel as though you’re at the end of the world, but Placencia village is just a short stroll or bike ride along the beach. Once a quiet fishing village, today it has eclectic art galleries, souvenir shops and a few options for sampling sweet gelato. If you’re spotted by an off-duty staffer from Chabil Mar, as I was, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted like an old friend and offered a lift back to your new favorite beachfront hideaway.

This is an amazing resort in a beautiful undeveloped country. The level and quality of service is top notch, the staff is friendly and informed and the general manager, Chris, is always on hand to make sure everything is perfect or to offer suggestions for dining or exploring. Two infinity pools and a location right on the Caribbean, an excellent kitchen, and an interesting, safe and friendly town to explore, plus the adventures the jungle and the sea offer make this a perfect vacation spot.

My husband and I had a fantastic time starting with Natalie at the front desk. She was extremely friendly and welcoming. We stayed in a wonderful condo looking out over the ocean. Bartender Ansellmo and Daniel were never far away if we needed anything.
We will be back!

Beautiful grounds, with a mix of local Belize and Polynesian settings, wild birds peacefully chirping away and very friendly Iguanas all around. Great beach bar, but note the sand flies are there during this time of year so bring bug spray, baby oil and calamine lotion. The people that work here including, Daniel, Juan, Alberto and all the ladies at the concierge are super friendly and helpful.. Not much else close downside, pools are amazing and the hotel is very close to the airport, shopping, bars, dancing, dive shops.. they also have a free shuttle if you want to venture beyond the resort. Rooms are a bit pricey but it's definitely one of the nicest places to stay in Placencia. Chef Daniel is amazing ! Are there almost every night As chef Daniel is amazing.. but if one decides to venture out for finer dining.. can’t say enough good things about RUMFISH ! Also fished right off the hotel dock and caught a few snapper; there was also a HUGE barracuda and several manatee around there. Highly recommend
