Overview

The Review

Chabil Mar takes advantage of its location at the end of southern Belize’s Placencia Peninsula to show off a very different side of the Caribbean coastline. A short, 30-minute flight from Belize City, the resort is inspired by its little-explored tropical setting, infusing it in every aspect of the 22-villa property. The friendly staff is there to welcome you at Placencia Airport, just as cool towels and sweet icy drinks greet you on arrival at the hotel — perfect aids for the transition to beachside relaxation.

The 22 one- and two-bedroom villas are uniformly spacious at 850 and 950 square feet, respectively, and all are individually decorated in a sunny tropical style with bright local artwork and Belizean wood. {“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2930/prop-97802-1339096649-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The on-site Cafe Mar restaurant serves delicious Belizean cuisine in a breezy setting.”}All the modern amenities are present, including kitchens with dark wood cabinets, separate living areas, free WiFi and laundry facilities. Best of all, the villas have private verandas overlooking the grounds or the Caribbean Sea.

Sun-seekers and romancing couples make up the majority of the guests here, and most are content to spend their time by the pool or on lounge chairs along the private 400-foot stretch of sand. The beautiful sea is impossible to resist for too long, however, and kayaks are available for guests. Head out along the beach to the mangrove lagoon in search of the resident manatees, who appear as laid-back as you’ll feel while paddling past the shoreline.

Back on dry land, the on-site restaurant offers both an extensive menu and multiple dining options. I enjoyed a breakfast of golden fry jacks on my private deck and lunch of shrimp ceviche near the pool. Any evening meal, whether it’s simple seafood chowder or grilled fresh lobster, is romantic when it’s specially prepared out on the pier.

The remote setting, at the end of Placencia’s skinny peninsula, can feel as though you’re at the end of the world, but Placencia village is just a short stroll or bike ride along the beach. Once a quiet fishing village, today it has eclectic art galleries, souvenir shops and a few options for sampling sweet gelato. If you’re spotted by an off-duty staffer from Chabil Mar, as I was, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted like an old friend and offered a lift back to your new favorite beachfront hideaway.

Best trip EVER because of Chabil Mar

Thanks to: Sheldon, Darren, and staff
Chabil Mar is absolutely a five out of five resort. From the second we landed, to the moment we had to leave, we experienced the highest level of customer service. Once getting off the plane, we were handed fresh water and a cold wash cloth, which may not sound like much, but after traveling for hours, it makes the perfect touch. As we pulled into the resort, we were greeted, by name, with a handmade cocktail while our bags were carried up to the room. The staff at Chabil Mar know exactly how to make guests feel comfortable and welcomed. Everyone we encountered was extremely friendly and was genuinely working to make our stay at Chabil Mar one to never forget. My personal favorite was the large iguanas throughout the resort, they were fascinating to look at and harmless. Chabil Mar also offered paddle boarding and kayaking which was nice to test out when we needed a break from the infinity pool or ocean. The little town of Placencia was only a bike ride away, which they also provided the bicycle. Placencia is the cutest village with shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and bars. Overall, Chabil Mar is one of the best resorts I’ve stayed at and I guarantee you will feel the same way.
Favorite excursion was Monkey River Tour with PERCY-must have Percy as your guide. Lifetime experience.

Just Perfect

The villas are large, with full kitchens, washer and dryer, living area and the one we had was a 2 bedroom with 2 bathrooms. There are fans and air conditioning. The buildings are only 2 storeys high so nothing feels imposing, and there is bougainvillea everywhere that the iguanas just love to sit in. They crawl around the decks but are more afraid of you than you will be of them.
It's not a large property but there are 2 decent sized, clean swimming pools, a great bar at the rear of the peoperty, and beautiful pier out to a covered area where during the day you can lounge around on deck chairs, or at night you can eat dinner there.
The unique thing is that the hotel doesn't have a restaurant per se - there is a fabulous kitchen that prepares a full and varied menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but you can have it brought to you anywhere on the property! We had breakfast brought to our balcony every morning, lunch on the beach, dinner once once on the pier (this you must reserve) and once on the beach deck. The wait staff are excellent and always available. The food ranged from good to excellent.
The hotel has bikes for your use free of charge, a shuttle that goes every hour into Placencia proper (about a 20 minute walk) starting at 4pm, and golf carts for rent. The concierge will make all sorts of arrangements for you from booking snorkeling (Splash Dive Centre is right across the road) to making dinner reservations.
The beach was cleaned/raked every morning. This area of the ocean has some sea grass so there is some debris on the beach but the main part is lovely and clean.
There is cold infused water available poolside every day. My only 2 minor quibbles would be that the glasses weren't replaced often enough, and the beach towels were also not replaced often enough.
Otherwise, it was just perfect!

Amazing Stay at Chabil Mar

We had an amazing stay at Chabil Mar in early Jan 2019. The food and service was outstanding. Wonderful pancakes and eggs Benedict for breakfast and great options for dinner. We ate most dinners in the village of Placencia at the Tipsy Tuna and Barefoot Cafe. Also check out he Cozy Corner for there wonderful shakes and smoothies. Morris the bartender was a great wealth of information about the local places to eat and things to do.

The perfect place to spend a vacation

This was our 3rd trip to Chabil Mar. It exceeded our expectations again this year. The new chef and new menu are fabulous. The staff is so nice and friendly. They cannot do enough for you even if it is not their job or responsibility. Alex, the beach guy, was great. Very polite and helpful. Duane and Morris were great as our bartenders. We booked again for next year and can't wait. The best vacation!!
