How to Get There
Location was excellent. Staff and service were on par with other 5 star hotels. Room was quiet and comfortable. Bathroom was well sized and functional, and very clean. But, shower splash would often wet the floor.
After spending a week here with my girlfriend, I can safely say it was one of the best hotels I have ever had the pleasure of staying at. Everything from the staff friendliness, the facilities, the cleanliness, the location - perfect.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by an extremely friendly Josep who offered us a complementary drink at the bar and took our case off us. We were then left to chill until we were ready to check in. The room was clean, had a great balcony, nice shower - basically everything you'd want from a hotel room.
Over the week, we walked out most days and then in the evenings to do different things and visit various places and the staff were again extremely helpful with this. A special mention has to go to Lenin who helped us book the Nou Camp tour and The Sagrada Familia tour (with a discount applied as a result of booking through the hotel). The staff also had superb knowledge of the surrounding area, good restaurants and transport links to the various places you're likely to visit. (Check out my other reviews if you want to see the places we rated)
Overall, it was a delightful week spent at the Olivia Balmes hotel and I really cannot fault my stay here. Attached are two photos of a few nice touches and complementary bits that the hotel provided during our stay too.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Barcelona.
I have had the privilege of visiting Barcelona annually for about 10 years. The Olivia Balmes is part of what makes my trips so memorable.
The staff are warm and welcoming, including Xavi and Alberto in the restaurant, Godfrey at the door, and all the front desk staff. As an example, I arrived at about noon and my room was understandably not yet ready. I sat in the restaurant area and, even though breakfast had already ended, the staff brought me out a small dish of pastries and a coffee at no charge. Very considerate!
The location is great and the rooms are very comfortable, including nice pillows and excellent air conditioning (a favorite of mine). WiFi worked very well for streaming on my iPad. The breakfast is another favorite with a very nice buffet and the availability of omelets and espresso drinks.
While I really like the Olivia, I will mention a few minor problems in the spirit of helping them improve.
1. The electricity went out when a fuse blew while I was moving the electrical vanity mirror in the bathroom. Engineering quickly responded and fixed it. Be careful to not move the mirrors too much vertically.
2. The shower is slippery and I actually had a rather scary fall this time, hitting my head against the shower wall. I have had some intermittent neck and head pain since. Be careful when stepping into and out of the shower!
3. I believe the bath products have been downgraded, which is disappointing, and the body lotion appeared to have been previously used. Hot water was available for all showers, although it was intermittent on one day.
4. The gym is sufficient with 2 treadmills, an elliptical, a stationary bike, a funky weight machine, and sit-up bench. Okay overall but I would like to see a set of dumbbells.
Overall, a great stay. A few minor annoyances that were more than compensated for by the wonderful staff, comfortable room, excellent location, and great breakfast.
We stayed at Hotel Olivia and all I can say is that it was a nice quiet hotel with great front desk staff. Everyone was super nice and provided great recommendations to see tours and attractions. Lenin at the front desks was super nice, knowledgeable, and had a smile each day.
Rooms - decent size, clean, and had a different layOut than most American or normal rooms have. The shower is right next to the bed (glass), with the vanity being out in the open. The only thing that’s enclosed in its own little room is the toilet. Plenty of closet space. No irons so make sure you ask for one each day. Must be a Spain thing because another hotel we stayed at in Ibiza also made customers request irons. Housekeeping comes each day early, so make sure to leave the door sign on if you sleep in.
Location - centrally located about 10-15 mins from Las Ramblas. Plenty of restaurants all over, but not as hectic as Placa de Gràcia. My husband and I were able to walk around to decent restaurants that didn’t feel like tourist traps. Very lovely areas all around.
Cost - we got our hotel roughly for $250 a night which was with 3 weeks of arrival date. I’d say to watch this hotel for under this price point as it’s decent to stay in, but not super fancy. We didn’t see people mingling in the bar or much crowds. But then again most people there are tourists so they are out and about.
Would we stay here again? Probably not just because we’d probably plan ahead better and find another hotel with more time and closer to the $200 range. It seems most hotels are simple and not getting much more for paying $50 extra. Breakfast was not included.
The staff at this hotel go above and beyond. They are very friendly and super helpful. I must say I would recommend to stay here and I will always stay here when in Barcelona. Food and drinks vet reasonable.
