First impressions
Pretty little hotel in a nice enough area, it has 38 bedrooms so it’s very small, but friendly, and a very helpful young lady greeted us on reception, acknowledged our booking and checked us in. The bedroom isn’t large, but clean and well equipped with a modern style, bed is a comfortable double with lovely squishy pillows.
There is a large “Juliet balcony” looking down onto a small courtyard which is very pretty.
Right in the middle of Barcelona, about 15 minutes walk to the Ramblas.
We got a really good deal and must say I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the standard.

We where in Barcelona for 5 days, and wanted to stay near the city center. Advance hotel is right next to Plza Catalunya and at a straight walk to all the "must see" spots of the city. The hotel has a wonderful ambience; elegantly decorated, very helpful staff, and delicious breakfast in the morning. Rooms are spacious and clean, and the quality of the bed was just perfect. I whole heartedly recommend Hotel Advance to anyone visiting the catalan capital for some days!

Our experience here was very unpleasant. The rooms were average with some bedsheets having stains on them. Breakfast was very limited and the same every day. The staff aren’t friendly and won’t listen to your feedback.

The hotel amenities aren’t of a 4 star quality but what’s really appalling about this hotel is their lack of people skills starting from the manager Veronica who is very cold and unwelcoming.

The first night we stayed there we heard screaming and banging around midnight from the guests next door to our room. We called reception and the guy came up and spoke to the guest next door to keep it down. Then the screaming stopped so we’re able to go back to sleep.

The second night we were woken up just before 4am by screaming and banging from the room next door again. We called reception again and the guy said he’ll call them. 15 minutes later the screaming hadn’t stopped, so we went downstairs and spoke to a guy called Mark. We explained that the screaming was still going on and we couldn’t sleep. He said that there was nothing he could do because he couldn’t identify where the noise was coming from. We said that the guy at reception the night before could identify that and after speaking to the guests next door to us the noise stopped. He said that he wasn’t aware of that and that he didn’t normally work for this hotel and he was just doing a favour covering for someone. He said there was nothing he could do and that it wasn’t his fault that the other guests were making noise.

We explained that this was the second night that our sleep was disrupted and asked him to move us to another room far away from the noisy guests. He said he could move us to another room but we had to pack our suitcases and empty our current room first. We explained that we were exhausted and sleep deprived. We asked if could go and sleep in the new room and pack our suitcases when we wake up in the morning. He said we had to pack up now otherwise he can’t move us to the new room. He showed no sympathy for our situation and kept repeating that it wasn’t his fault the guests were noisy which we found very unprofessional. It wasn’t our fault either but he’s representing the hotel so it was for him to put things right.

We were therefore made to pack our two suitcases at 4am and waited in the lobby until he found another room for us. We were humiliated and appalled at the way we had been treated. We asked to speak to a manager and he said that we could that in the morning when she’s back. We weren’t able to sleep anymore that night.

In the morning I spoke to Veronica, the manager and explained what had happened. She acknowledged that the guy on our first night had made her aware of the noisy guests next door and she had also spoken to them that day and they told her they would keep it down. She wasn’t aware of what had happened last night with Mark and agreed that he shouldn’t have made us pack at 4am and we could’ve done the packing after. However the only thing she offered to put it right was to give us a late check out which we didn’t take as we didn’t think that was enough to compensate us for what Mark put us through. She didn’t really make any efforts to make us feel better.

Barcelona is full of hotels- don’t waste your money here. As long as there’s no understanding of what customer service is I can’t this hotel improving any time soon. This is because mindsets take a long time to change and these people have no concept of what good service is.

Find another place to stay
Because of a flight delay we didn't arrive at the hotel until after midnight. When we pulled up in the taxi everything was dark through the glass doors and windows looking into the lobby. I had a bit of a panic thinking that they are closed and we didn't have any way of getting in. When I tried the door I was relieved that it opened. When we stepped in there was someone standing behind the desk in the dark. This was a very strange first impression. He turned on some lights and said he keeps them off so nobody walks in from the street because it can be dangerous.
While we were checking in we asked questions about the area, in particular good restaurants. He talked about some restaurants and said things that didn't make any sense. My wife's first language is Spanish so it wasn't a miscommunication thing. And then he said he's not from the area and didn't know. Then why give wrong info if you don't know?
The room was really small, no tissues anywhere, and bedding was old and dingy/dirty looking. The street noise is terrible, and we were on the 3rd floor.
The breakfast is terrible. 15 Euros per person for an anemic selection of low quality items. Once something is finished they don't replace it. Spend less money in any one of the great cafes in the neighborhood for better food and coffee.
It spite of all that we were thinking of extending our stay 2 more nights because we extended our trip and didn't feel like packing and unpacking. And so many other places were booked because of a local holiday.
At the desk we were quoted a ridiculous rate. When I showed the female manager much better rates online she said she couldn't do anything but would look into it. The next morning we were rushing out the lobby and the same person said she could do better on the price but not the same as online. We didn't have time to make a decision and asked if we could let her know before the end of the day. She said yes.
When we returned that night we told the person behind the desk we would accept the managers's rate and wanted to book the additional nights. She said she couldn't book anything and to wait until the next morning. The next morning I told the same female manager and she said that rate is no longer available. I won't bore you with details but you can image the conversation. How ridiculous is this.
Needless to say, we were done being treated so poorly and left to stay somewhere else that was much more welcoming and helpful.
Don't stay here. They are not nice people. Go somewhere else that appreciates your business.
