How to Get There
Pros: We loved the central location, courtyard & breakfast. Bed was soft and the room was clean. Service was mostly good.
Cons: Lots of little things added up enough to give a grim review considering the high price.
1. No one was at the ferry dock for luggage pick up as advertised (We don't have wheels on our luggage) Luckily the hotel is not far.
2. TV was not working properly (blacked out in intervals for minutes at a time making it impossible to watch programs, especially movies)
3. Phone speaker had a constant static noise (we needed to unplug it the whole trip)
4. The safe did not work
5. Tub stop was broken
6. Main light switch upon entering was oddly placed at 2-3ft off the ground. Sloppy placement for a hotel striving for excellence... unless you're an oompa loompa.
7. Lamp switch was not working
I spoke to the front desk to no avail, called again, and sent the manager an email. I have not received a response. We will probably try another place next time.
This is the second time we have stayed at this perfectly located property and this time we brought another couple along to share the holiday. As before, the staff are efficient and friendly, the rooms are elegant and spacious, the garden settings are beautiful, the fire pit is inviting and the complimentary happy hour and breakfast are wonderful ... what's not to love!
I have a family of four and we find the Pavillion to be the perfect getaway. We first stayed here in 2012 when our youngest was 2 and eldest was 5, next month will be our 6th consecutive summer stay at this hotel. Some of the staff remember us each year and always comment on how big my girls are getting. My girls will tell anyone that Catalina is their ‘happy place’.
Avalon itself is an amazing family vacation due to the fact everything is so close, there are plenty of things to do, and you don’t have to deal with car seats as there are no cars.
The Pavillion is our choice every year because, even though it is a little pricier than other hotels, you get so much more.
The breakfast is a huge value, it starts early and goes until around 10am, being that my girls and I wake up at 6, we graze for a while. The Wine and cheese is perfect. I like Wine and our first year I expected supermarket cheese and cheap wine. It’s not! The cheese selection is great (and varies each day) and I’ve discovered a few wines there that I then search out at home. My kids get excited for that hour too because they love having the lemonade and lounging in the courtyard playing games as a family.
This year I know they’ve added bike use, food delivery from a few restaurants, and tour tickets so I’m excited to check that out!
The only thing that keeps this from being an absolutely perfect hotel is the fact that the rooms with 2 beds have full size beds instead of queens. I find it a little squishy, but that small thing won’t stop us from returning year after year!
My positive impression of the Pavillion Hotel began before we step foot on the beautiful island. My husband and I chose to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in Catalina and I found a Helicopter-Hotel package deal that fit our needs. Wanting to maximize our time there, I asked in advance if it was possible to get an early check-in around one or so. I received a prompt reply back that it was okay along with our reservation for the helicopter which was coordinated with our early check-in. Our package deal also included a credit for dinner for two at the Avalon Grill. I explained that I have throat cancer and a tracheotomy tube in my throat and cannot eat regular food. I asked if it was possible to get room service or pickup with the dinner credit. The answer was yes. So far, so good.
The day of our get away we flew into Catalina via IEX Helicopter. What a great way to travel. Our pilots were professional and very knowledgeable. The views were spectacular, especially flying in towards the Avalon Harbor and Casino. As a courtesy, our pilot phoned ahead to have a taxi waiting for us upon arrival to take us to the hotel.
The hotel is located only steps from the beach. There is a large patio area in the front, with a variety of chairs and tables where guests can relax while treated to a gourmet wine and cheese hour every evening and a hot breakfast in the mornings. When we arrived at the hotel front desk, we were warmly greeted by Violet. After we gave her our name to check-in, she smiled and said,"It's your 20 year anniversary, happy anniversary! Then she proceeded to tell us that for the occasion they took the liberty to upgrade our room. Wow! What a nice surprise!
The room was more than we could ask for. The King size bed was plush with pillows to match. It had a down feather comforter which was truly delightful. The main bathroom was large and had a roomy floor type shower with a hand held shower head. French doors separated the bedroom from the living quarters in front. We had a comfortable couch, desk, and a large flat screen TV with HBO. Complimentary Wifi was also available. My favorite part of the room was our private patio, overlooking the lush green courtyard below along with a center view of the beach just steps away. The courtyard had very cozy chaise lounge chairs that guests could use to soak up a few rays and several tables with umbrellas. A beautiful green lawn area was center and a variety of plants and flowers outlined the perimeter. Our patio had a chaise lounge and two wicker chairs, and a table for our viewing pleasure.
We were treated like royalty during our entire stay at the Pavillion. Staff members such as: Violet, AnaI, and Eli, to name just a few, went out of there way to help us with our tours, room service, late check-out, and transportation. We most definitely will come back here, we had a fabulous time! We most highly recommend this hotel. Thanks, everyone, for helping to create beautiful memories of our 20th anniversary.
This is a lovely hotel. It's is very centrally located, right between the ferry and downtown. You can easily walk anywhere from here in Avalon. It's built surrounding a beautiful garden with loungers for a great place to relax. And then, of course, their evening wine and cheese hour -- at least four different wines and three cheeses. Beautiful evening reception before going out to dinner. All of this was easily five stars. Unfortunately, the air conditioning never worked in our unit and we couldn't get anyone to fix it. I think it probably was activated by motion-detectors, because it would cool off when we were in the unit, but when we returned from the day, it was extremely hot. And it would get hot during the night, even though we had it set at 65 degrees, it was always somewhere between 71-75 degrees. Then when we checked out, the front door couldn't print an invoice. I left my credit card information so that the bill could be split along with my email address. I never heard anything from the front desk, and the full charge was charged to my friend. When we called to try to get a copy of the invoice, it took 45 minutes to be connected to a person who could help. And were disconnected several times. Also, when we checked in, no one told us about the "value-add" features of the hotel like the free tours. Seemed like that would be a good thing to have known about. Again, the hotel is lovely, it is a great location and the wine and cheese hour is great fun. I would probably try a different hotel next time, however.
