Love this place
Reviewed 3 days ago

Recently returned from another great holiday at this lovely hotel. Our third.

The staff are the key to the great atmosphere at this hotel. Carole, Maria, Luis ( the baby brother of Angela the General Manager), Juan, Ines, Beatrix and Nicole to name just a few, make this place well worth a visit.

The hotel and its grounds, including the swimming pools and spa are immaculately kept. And the beach it sits on likewise. It stretches from Vila Baleria to Calheta some 9kms and has beautiful white sands that slope gently to the sea.

The animation team lead by Luciano kept us entertained with organised games during the day and various different shows in the evening. Try and get him to do some close up magic for you, it’ll blow your mind.

The food is ok, but lacks variety and the dining room could do with a revamp. Little details like no table clothes and worn out place settings give the place a dated feel. The freshly grilled and cooked elements were my favourite, although this whole area needs revamping and enlarging to make the most of the chefs skills.
We rarely needed to queue as some reviewers have mentioned. Although in high season this may be different.
Breakfast was the best meal for me, with loads of fresh food rotating regularly. Although a second toaster would be handy.

The burgers, hotdogs and toasted sandwiches around the pool bar served by Ines and her team were also great. Some people thought they weren’t cooked sufficiently, but I never found this to be the case. Just ask for it to be well cooked if you are worried.
The only criticism of this area is the little birds, sparrows I think, need to somehow be kept off the buffet. The staff do their best to shoo them away, but there were visible signs they’d been pecking at the cakes. A few cloches could easily stop this. This isn’t helped by people feeding them.

All in all I’d rate this hotel and it staff 5 stars and the food a solid 4 stars with a little more to do to be a 5. But for the money you’d have to go a long way to beat this place and we will 100% be back.

A welcome return

We discovered the island of Porto Santo on day trips from Funchal on some of our numerous holidays to Madeira. After hiring the Ferry bikes we cycled the full length of the island on more than one occasion and toured around on a Lazamar jeep safari with Sophia, we quickly became enamoured with Porto Santo’s calm and open space in contrast to the crowding and pace of Funchal.

So in 2017 we had our first full week’s holiday, stopping at the Pestana Porto Santo. Situated about 40 minutes easy walk from the town centre this 5* hotel really did seem to be designed as a tranquil oasis with its many low rise villas interspersed by palm trees situated around a series of connecting pools.

The first week in October suited us just fine as the main rush of the Madeira summer holidays was over, the island was beginning to wind down and yet the sun was still hot. So it was without hesitation that we booked for the same week this year.

Flying from Manchester is easy and the island’s extra-long runway is far less likely to be affected by weather than its Madeiran counterpart. Baggage reclaim is quick and short transfer times means that you are at the hotel before you know it.

The Pestana Porto Santo is well laid out and the rooms are comfortable and well furnished. Our upgrade to a suite was well worth it especially if, with a little help from the staff, you get a garden room with a balcony facing the island’s magnificent sunsets!

For sunbathing the choice is almost limitless – on the beach, in the sand dunes between the beach and hotel, the family area around one of the many pools or in the peaceful haven of the beautiful terraced gardens. The daily activities programmes by the hotel’s animation team are varied without being intrusive.

The Pestana Porto Santo is well placed about half way along the island’s famous beach giving unrivalled views of the dramatic sunrises and then it’s a simple choice of either turning left to walk towards the town and harbour or right to walk to Calhetta at the very end of the island where thankfully tables and refreshments await.

The hotel runs a courtesy shuttle bus - usually open topped - to town a few times a day giving you the opportunity to stroll around some of the old streets and sample the museums and small collection of shops and bars.

There are numerous activities all around the island too including jeep safaris, quad biking, cycling (hire the electric bikes) horse riding, sailing, walking or golf. A must is a visit to the Quinta das Palmeiras mini zoo up in the hills, which has taken one man decades to develop. It is now the most truly amazing surprise from the moment you walk in and wander around all the birds and animals to the final part when you meet the resident parrot famous for its penchant for Pestana hotel wristbands.

Back at the hotel the Sunset Terrace is, as its name suggests, a good spot to indulge in a cocktail or two at the end of the day. The hotel’s All-inclusive package is excellent value with a wide variety of foods and drink in the extensive dining room and bars, together with themed dining on certain nights in its smaller speciality restaurants. There is entertainment every evening ranging from local musicians right through to a circus night.

The Dunas poolside bar and eatery being open throughout the main part of the day is especially welcomed by families and the introduction of self-service facilities for drinks, teas & coffees has certainly speeded up the system

However, we cannot stress too highly that what makes all the above work so well in the Pestana Porto Santo is the STAFF, who under the inspired leadership of their manager Angela Quintal, are just brilliant. From the dining areas and bars, the animation team, the cleaners and porterage they are a blend of locals, Madeirans and Europeans all fused together as a great team who are always so cheerful and extremely hardworking.

At the risk of singling out one area, we feel that we should mention the Reception Team as they are the first people you meet on arrival and the last you see on departure and thus create that lasting impression. The check-in and check-out is very slick especially when so many people can all be coming and going on the same flight. We were extremely lucky to have met one of the team last year, Nadia, who was so wonderfully helpful to us before, during and even after our stay this time.

Porto Santo is such a beautiful island with so much to offer and yet is so dependent upon tourists and outside workers to boost their economy and so we hope that they all return next year, as we certainly will be doing.
