You’ll feel right at home in this airy boutique hotel in Cartagena’s historic center. The six sunny bedrooms strike the perfect balance of stylish and cozy — whitewashed walls, fluffy eggshell comforters and subdued furnishings — while the dining room’s bold black-and-white checkered floor is decidedly modern. Take breakfast on your private balcony (in the suite), retire to the intimate courtyard pool or settle in with a glass of champagne in the rooftop hot tub — you’ll enjoy a lofty view of the neighboring houses and the Caribbean Sea in the distance.
In the Area
Casa Don Sancho puts you within walking distance of some of Cartagena’s top attractions. Wander the charming narrow streets of the old walled city while feasting on arepas and exploring hidden courtyards. Take in a dance show or play at Teatro Heredia, a theater inaugurated in 1911 to commemorate 100 years of independence. Or take a day trip to the Islas del Rosario; the 30-island archipelago, about 40 minutes off the coast, boasts miles of white sand beaches and crystal clear water for snorkeling.
How to Get There
We were greeted at Casa Don Sancho with two lovely drinks of our choosing (I had a michelada while my husband had a beer). We got a tour of the home, everything was spotless and immaculately decorated. There was fresh white roses in all of the rooms and relaxing music playing. The pool on the first floor was so wonderful. The lounge chairs next to it are extremely comfortable and great for a little nap. The rooftop was the real stunner with great views of the ocean and city. The staff prepared a romantic 5 year anniversary dinner for us on the roof. They set up a beautiful table, lit candles, played music, and purchased legitimately the most beautiful red roses I've ever seen. The staff were incredibly thoughtful and caring. They organized several dinner reservations for us as well as a trip to Coralina Island. When we got back from Coralina, I had a fish bone stuck in my throat that was really bothering me. The staff was so great, they called the medical help line for advice, prepared hard rolls for me to eat, and it worked! I felt so much better. Casa Don Sancho truly was a home away from home for us. Breakfast was delicious, the bed was comfortable, and we loved the turn down service (water and chocolate)! It was also very quiet at night, which was a nice respite from the busy Old Town. When we walked in the doors at the end of each day it truly felt like we were simply coming home. We can't recommend this hotel more.
If we could give Casa Don Sancho more than 5 stars we would. Everything from the staff, to the food, to the service was beyond incredible. The hotel itself was beautiful, clean, romantic, and extremely charming. The staff was extremely welcoming, friendly and accommodating. They even went to the lengths of helping us get reservations at restaurants that were completely booked for the night. The food was high quality. In fact, we thought it was comparable to some of our best meals out. Our last night, they set up a private roof top dinner by candle light, and it was one of the best dinners we had during our trip. Hotel Casa Don Sancho was beyond magical. When we return to Cartagena, we will be staying there again.
I just spent 6 days at this beautiful and luxurious hotel which is run more like a family B&B. The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. Rooms on the 3rd floor are the most peaceful with a joint salon area to enjoy your morning cappuccino with a book, here also you get the most breeze in the hotel. The roof is a lovely place for cocktails. Location is spectacular, directly in the beautiful old town. My only negative comment is that the pool and jacuzzi need to be cleaned every week. They were both very dirty. Particularly important with 42C real feel temperatures and everyone using them to cool off. The breakfasts were large and plentiful. I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat!
