Romantic Carmel Valley retreat with an on-site estate vineyard, gourmet restaurants and a full-service spa and salon
Far from the crowds that can dominate other winemaking regions, Carmel Valley is a quiet area just 15 minutes inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea. Among the vineyards lies Bernardus Lodge, an escape for foodies, oenophiles and spa mavens alike. The look is pure Wine Country, with solid wood construction, fireplaces and a selection of antiques throughout.
Bed & Bath
The guestrooms retain this vibe, with stone fireplaces and private decks that offer superb views of the gorgeous countryside. Featherbeds and tubs big enough for two make for an indulgent touch as well. After a long day of exploring vineyards and attending tastings, this is an excellent place to come home to.
Spa lovers will find plenty to enjoy at Bernardus, including a variety of unique wine-inspired treatments, like the grape impressions treatment (featuring a cabernet body mud mask, of course). Serious foodies should make reservations at the lodge’s signature restaurant, Marinus. Chef Cal Stamenov has earned his five-star reputation with dishes that make the most of farm-fresh ingredients for his reasonably-priced tasting menu (approximately $120 vs. French Laundry’s $270). There’s also the more casual indoor/outdoor Wickets with its popular al fresco fireside seating and the hotel’s Carmel Valley Village steakhouse and saloon
In the Area
Winery-hop without the worry of getting behind the wheel with the Grapevine Express bus between Carmel Valley Village and the Monterey Conference Center. Tip back whiskey, beer or locally made wine in a saloon scene straight out of the Wild Wild West at the Running Iron. For hiking and horseback riding, visit the 4,500-acre Garland Ranch Regional Park, 8.6 miles east of Highway 1 on Carmel Valley Road. Stop by the Farm Stand at Earthbound Farm for organic produce, ice cream, a salad bar, baked goods, flowers and cut-your-own herbs.
