How to Get There
The Villas at Sunset Lane beat every expectation that I set for it! The location is excellent...it is about a 10 minute walk to the beach, with beautiful views of the sun setting over the ocean from the top deck! We stayed in the Villa North and it was perfect for our small group. It has two large bedrooms, both with bathrooms, and a downstairs floor with a kitchen and living room area, and a private deck. From the top floor you are steps to the pool, and the bottom floor brings you to the walkway to the beach and resort area.
Jackie helped us enjoy our stay in every way. We asked her where the closest grocery store was and she actually dropped us off and waited for us to get our food so that we didn't have to walk with all of our things in the heat (the store is about a 15 min walk). Jackie is also an INCREDIBLE chef, and on request was able to cook dinner for us one night during our stay for an outstanding price. Our group was all vegetarians and she made us a delicious garden salad, eggplant, chickpeas and sweet potatoes...all fresh and delicious. She is always a phone call away, willing to answer all of your questions and make your experience the best possible. We also go massages during our stay and the masseuse was the amazing. Easily one of the best massages I've ever had.
Reading some of the less impressive Trip Adviser reviews, I think your opinion of The Villas will depend on what kind of traveler you are. If you are used to staying at large resorts, like room service, meals and drinks available on your terms, I would stay at a resort...there are a few right on the beach just a few miles away. This is an accommodations only stay, and meals are available on request and with notice. Jackie is the only chef, and she picks out the ingredients and meals based on your dietary preferences and needs, so this is something that needs to be arranged in advance. This is THE place to stay in Antigua if you don't mind not being right on the beach, and prioritize personalized service, and authentic experiences over your typical resort trip. I am a travel agent and will be recommending this beautiful property to my clients. We are already planning our next stay. THANK YOU, Jackie!
What a wonderful time my friend and I had here! Gorgeous place and very peaceful! We also love the island of Antigua! I wish we were there longer! Will definitely go back in the future! Jackie and Joely are the best! :)
A very nice, comfortable, large room in a setting convenient to beach activities. We were only able to spend one night here, but after a total of ten days on Antigua and Montserrat, I can confidently say that the gourmet dinner cooked by Jackie was the standout meal of our trip. She definitely has the magic touch. I say it's worth staying here just to get a chance to talk with Jackie and experience her cuisine.
Jackie is always there to help, whether it's to advise on beaches, restaurants, taxis. Nothing is too much trouble. She runs this small hotel like her own home and it is spotlessly clean, very comfortable bed and huge bathroom. Jackie loves baking and freshly-baked muffins or slices of cake will appear at any time of day. It's a very relaxing place to stay if you like to feel at home and not in an anonymous corporate hotel. Highly recommended.
The consistency of outstanding reviews amazes us. Yes, Jackie is very polite, friendly and is clearly trying to offer good service but for a variety of reasons it is, in our opinion, falling short. Firstly, this is just not a great location for holiday visitors (it seemed that many guests are here on business). Nearby Dickenson beach is dominated by Sandals resort and the nearby Antiguan Apartments. The casual visitor is not catered for with sunbeds as on other beaches and the narrow beach was overcrowded anyway. There are other fairly unattractive beaches down the coast towards St. John's. Frankly, the west coast beaches south of St John's are great and the best for casual visitors.
The hotel, itself, is far from inexpensive but service is rather hit and miss, depending on which staff member you speak to. On our arrival, the fridge in our room was turned off so the complimentary water was not cold. We asked a staff member for an extra pillow (only 3 on our bed) and were told no more were available, but were on order. An hour or so later, on request to Jackie, one was given to us with no difficulty. Around the pool, only one inaccessible umbrella was in view and none of the sunbeds had mattresses (they are actually very good mattresses) and like so much else they were presented only on request. We had only one bathrobe in our room and in our "deluxe" room there was only a bedside table and light on one side of the bed. Hot water took absolutely ages to run. We had hoped to book dinner on the day we arrived but we were told no dinner was to be cooked that night. When we did have dinner here it was excellent but, oddly, the only drink we were offered was water.
The property is quite and very attractive but, in places looking a bit scruffy. So, sadly, this odd place just did not do it for us. It fell well short of the impression it gives on TripAdvisor and its website.
