A slice of 1930s Art Deco glamour and old-school elegance in downtown Reykjavik

The Look

Located on the corner of pretty Austurvollur Square, Hotel Borg opened as Reykjavik’s first luxury hotel back in the 1930s. Today, stepping inside is like stepping back in time. Its features have been lovingly restored, but the old black-and-white photographs that line the walls pay homage to the past. The design is Art Deco, with opaline globe lamps, geometric headboards and polished parquet floors — a total contrast to its Scandi-chic neighbors.

Bed and Bath

None of the 56 plush guestrooms makes the mistake of compromising comfort for style. Hastens beds with sink-into mattresses are topped with goosedown comforters, while the monochromatic bathrooms come with Philippe Starck fittings and heated marble floors. Walls are either in neutral tones or deep browns, and furnishings come in the form of cream leather bucket chairs and polished wood desks.

Downstairs, the elegant, high-ceilinged Borg Restaurant draws locals in for its constantly changing menu and arguably the best seafood in the city. It’s filled with a mix of vintage and modern furnishings, from boudoir-style chairs to elaborate Old World floors and ceilings. For private events in the most elegant of surroundings, the gold ballroom, a former dancing haunt, is well worth dressing up for.

In the Area

Despite being set on a quiet square in downtown Reykjavik, Hotel Borg is still in the heart of the action. It’s a five-minute stroll from the main street, Laugavegur, which is filled with beautiful design shops, bars and restaurants. The old harbor is a short walk away, and you can take whale-watching trips year-round. Head there in the height of summer to see orcas under the midnight sun. If you’re in Iceland for the northern lights, Super Jeep has trained guides who can pick you up and take you on an awe-inspiring adventure to chase the celestial show.

Art Deco Luxury and a great location

Good size room????
High quality finish????
Great location????
Small and average spa ????
Teas and coffees available in reception????
No parking on site - our cars wing mirror got damaged????
Good breakfast ????

Very stylish boutique style hotel with a very luxurious Art Deco styling and feel to it. The hotel is located right next to many bars, restaurants and stores and many sights are a walkable distance. Our car was parked on the road outside overnight and our wing mirror was damaged by another car.

The room was located towards the back of the hotel with a restricted view which overlooked (and was overlooked) by a book store’s cafe terrace. This was fine as we wanted a quiet room in light of the airwaves festival that was going on when we were staying.

The hotel was selected because of its location, that it had spa facilities and it’s VIP status on Expedia. The location made good on its promise but other two were not as we had hoped but were still satisfactory. The service and check in with reception was very good. We were offered a complimentary breakfast for the second morning of our stay which was very nice of the hotel staff. The breakfast was very good. The hotel had a number of luxurious touches which I liked including nespresso coffee machines in the room and reception, Molton Brown toiletries in the room, branded towels and bath robes.

On the whole a very lovely hotel and I would recommend it as a great place to stay. However, I am not sure if I would stay again.

Would highly recomend

Staff were exceptional, room was one of the nicest we have ever stayed in & the spa facilities, although a little small, were amazing. Jamie Olivers being attached to the hotel was also really nice and the food was delicious. Would highly recomend.
