Overview

A slice of 1930s Art Deco glamour and old-school elegance in downtown Reykjavik

The Look

Located on the corner of pretty Austurvollur Square, Hotel Borg opened as Reykjavik’s first luxury hotel back in the 1930s. Today, stepping inside is like stepping back in time. Its features have been lovingly restored, but the old black-and-white photographs that line the walls pay homage to the past. The design is Art Deco, with opaline globe lamps, geometric headboards and polished parquet floors — a total contrast to its Scandi-chic neighbors.

Bed and Bath

None of the 56 plush guestrooms makes the mistake of compromising comfort for style. Hastens beds with sink-into mattresses are topped with goosedown comforters, while the monochromatic bathrooms come with Philippe Starck fittings and heated marble floors. Walls are either in neutral tones or deep browns, and furnishings come in the form of cream leather bucket chairs and polished wood desks.

Beyond

Downstairs, the elegant, high-ceilinged Borg Restaurant draws locals in for its constantly changing menu and arguably the best seafood in the city. It’s filled with a mix of vintage and modern furnishings, from boudoir-style chairs to elaborate Old World floors and ceilings. For private events in the most elegant of surroundings, the gold ballroom, a former dancing haunt, is well worth dressing up for.

In the Area

Despite being set on a quiet square in downtown Reykjavik, Hotel Borg is still in the heart of the action. It’s a five-minute stroll from the main street, Laugavegur, which is filled with beautiful design shops, bars and restaurants. The old harbor is a short walk away, and you can take whale-watching trips year-round. Head there in the height of summer to see orcas under the midnight sun. If you’re in Iceland for the northern lights, Super Jeep has trained guides who can pick you up and take you on an awe-inspiring adventure to chase the celestial show.

Over priced. Under performs.

This hotel is a very overpriced and extremely average hotel. The hotel rooms are HOT! You cannot cool them down. The radiators cannot be turned off and the floors in the bathroom are hot and cannot be regulated. We were here 4 nights and complained all 4 nights and got arguments from the front desk. Icelanders generally don't "get" hospitality....but the Borg REALLY doesn't get it. I was told we were not regulating the radiators properly. I finally went to the front desk in my pajama's and brought a desk clerk up to my room. She confirmed we were using the radiators property. That they were pumping out heat and that the room was over 80 degrees. At this point her only solution was for me to ask to speak to the manager at 8:30 in the morning when he arrived--(but I'm being picked up at 8am to catch a flight).

DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL. THEIR PRICES ARE ASTRONOMICAL. THEIR SERVICE IS POOR. THE DECOR IS TIRED. IT IS OVERALLL A TERRIBLE VALUE.

As advertised - terrific boutique hotel

This hotel was as advertised. High end, high quality, boutique hotel in the perfect location in Reykjavik. If you are looking for a large hotel with all of the bells and whistles that come with it then this is not your place. Terrific place to base yourself. All worthwhile restaurants are within walking distance. Good service

very well done!

It means so much when you travel all night long and get into the city at 7:00 am and the hotel gives you a room! We did not have to wait and it meant so much to be able to take a nap and then enjoy the city. The hotel is in a great location of the old town and is immaculately clean. The room was very very small but we were fine. Overall a good experience!

Nice hotel

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The room was large, clean and nice. The location of the hotel is great as it is right near the city center. I do not recommend the breakfast as it was nothing special and there were better options close by. I would definitely stay here again.

Loved it

Stayed here in May for 5 nights. Loved it. Great Staff. I dropped $10000 Kroner at the front desk and some one returned it to the desk. Staff waited for my call and returned it safely. Try that in the States. Really nice restaurant and bar downstairs. Small gym and baths/sauna in the basement. Great location. Bus stop for all the tours stops 100 M away. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. I walked to dinner and lunch in less than 10 mins for every meal. Liquor store, coffee shops, retail, and drug store all nearby. I could easily walk to the bay to take a run, walk to the big church, walk to a public bath.....Rooms were spacious and cozy. Hot water straight from the earth heated the radiator and it worked too well. Same pristine , slightly sulfuric, water for the bath. Completely drinkable, so bring a water bottle or buy one there. I would stay here again in a heart beat and hope to do so next summer.
