In trendy Puerto Madero, a waterfront barrio, the Faena Hotel Buenos Aires is built in statuesque red brick, walled in from its buzzing surroundings. The over-the-top style starts in the lobby, with velvet curtains and a sumptuously dark interior. The dramatic color palette of reds, blacks and whites defines the property’s style, and there’s a vibe to match: Beautiful people are everywhere — by the intimate pool, doing business deals in the Library Lounge, eating in the cantina-style El Mercado restaurant.
Bed and Bath
If the public spaces are a study in dark drama, the guestrooms are the opposite. Decorated in bright reds and pure whites, the rooms add drama, some with sleek glass-walled bathrooms, others with mirrored furniture and leather and metallic accents. But wood floors and large windows create a light, airy ambience, while blackout shades ensure undisturbed rest.
Entering the white and gold El Bistro, the property’s upscale restaurant, can be disarming. Don’t let the unicorn heads scare you — the experience will be unusual from start to finish, especially if you order dessert (try the white chocolate egg with a gooey tangerine yolk). El Bistro is just one of the hotel’s public spaces dedicated to the kind of sceney nightlife found in locales like Miami Beach. The famed El Cabaret has authentic tango shows, while the Cellar holds 400 bottles of wine, and the Pool Bar serves fruity cocktails late into the night.
In the Area
Spend an afternoon flexing that plastic in Palermo Soho, a posh part of town that’s home to some of the area’s most unique boutiques. Continue your shopping stocking up on leather and exotic skins at Lopez Taibo and Casa Lopez. When night falls, see an opera or ballet at the legendary Teatro Colón, considered to have some of the best acoustics in the world.
How to Get There
Faena is a truly unique and wonderful experience, an absolute labour of love from designer Alan Faena, which set off a major re-development at the time of former forgotten docklands in Buenos Aires. Located in a huge warehouse building near the waterside with glamour puss touches, luxury elements and unashamedly bold interior design. Though a touch faded in places, it kitsch humour mixes with high quality fixtures, fittings and room wares. The service is quite literally second to none and perhaps wins out over all, from bellhop to concierge, who are all noticeably efficient and accommodating, it is true to say that we were extremely well looked after. The gym and spa must be experienced if you can squeeze in the time and you will definitely be drawn to the central Library Bar at all hours of the day and night by the especially curated entertainment. We only stayed for one night so did not get to appreciate El Mercado but it certainly looked wonderful and if the food can be judged on the service, you will find yourselves much satisfied. We were delighted to have seen the Rojo Tango cabaret show which I would say is a must if you are visiting Argentina and which appeared to gather guests from all over town such has the great word spread. Thank you very much for having us Faena and for such an enjoyable stay.
Had stayed in Faena for a couple of weeks. Lovely place to stay. Very friendly and helpful staff. El Mercado and the Library Bar are pretty good options available right at your doorstep and the location is extremely convenient and close to the waterfront and downtown.
I almost never write reviews but I can’t say enough about this property, the service and all of the staff! The hotel is beautiful. We were treated to an upgrade to their 2 floor suite which was amazing. The staff and service is above any hotel I have stayed at in the past (four seasons, st Regis, Ritz Carlton). Truly an amazing property with great people running it. Would definitely recommend to anyone and hope to be back next time we visit!
