How to Get There
We just love Captain's House Inn - The staff is always wonderful, the rooms are impressive and all have a character of their own. This is an outstanding example of a New England Inn. We stay here the first weekend of every January and plan on doing so for many years to come.
My wife and I have been guests of the Captain's House Inn many times over the last thirteen years. Our most recent visit during Thanksgiving week was typical, leaving us feeling that we'd been pampered by Jill and James and their staff. A full breakfast every morning, daily afternoon tea, and cookies in the evening provide plenty of edible delights. It can be quite difficult, but we recommend pacing yourself, especially if you'll be staying multiple nights! James has also put together a very nice short list of beers, hard cider and wines that are provided at a very reasonable cost for guests who care to imbibe.
We've stayed in a number of the inn's rooms and suites and each has something unique to offer. All are very nicely-appointed. Most have a gas fireplace or two. Jill and James have undertaken a number of room facelifts and improvements over the years without losing the character of the property. The photos and detailed descriptions of the accommodations on the Captain's House web site can be quite helpful when choosing a room.
The CHI staff is second to none. The grounds are spotless. We always appreciate the effort the housekeeping staff makes to freshen our room while we're at breakfast. A knock on our door and negotiation regarding timing is rare. It may seem like a small gesture, but it illustrates the innkeepers' and staff's attention to detail. The same is true of the "innstitutional memory" regarding preferences and special needs, dietary and otherwise, not just during a stay but from stay to stay.
The only downside of a visit to the Captain's House Inn is the inevitable return to normal life. Our look forward to the next stay begins almost as soon as we say goodbye to James or Jill before we head home.
My wife and I stayed here three nights. The Inn has a good size staff which greeted us upon our arrival and showed us around the property.
The inn is an old historic home with lots of character. I could only imagine how beautiful the property would be in the nice weather.
We stayed in one of the out buildings. Our room was large and comfortable with a sitting area and bedroom both with gas fireplaces. Our bathroom was large with a good size shower and Jacuzzi tub. We had a mini fridge with some juice and water. Also chips and granolas for snacking. Shortly after our arrival the inn staff brought up a plate of chocolate dipped strawberries for our anniversary. That was a nice touch and greatly appreciated.
Each morning you can have coffee and juice delivered to your door. Breakfast started to be served at 8:00AM until 10:00 AM. Breakfast was served in a nice sunroom. Each day breakfast had two main choices which we both enjoyed. Jill the innkeeper/owner would come talk to the guests while you were easting breakfast.
In the library port and sherry is left out for your consumption. During the afternoon tea is available which we did not participate in. After dinner some cookies were left out to snack on but we thought they were a little basic.
Housekeeping was very efficient and did an outstanding job! Kudos to the housekeeping staff keeping the inn sparkling clean.
Parking seemed a little tight at times. The inn was pretty full during our stay but at full capacity parking may be a little issue.
The inn is located in a nice area with a short drive to downtown or the lighthouse.
Overall a great inn, well managed and maintained that I would recommend.
We recently stayed at the Captain’s House for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our room was beautifully designed with both comfort and convenience in mind. During our stay, the charming staff was quick to accommodate any needs. The innkeeper himself graciously came out on a freezing holiday eve to address a concern. The staff and owners treat their inn as a well loved home and you will feel that welcoming warmth as well. The cookies and delicious breakfast add the final delightful touch.
Everything about The Captain's House Inn is excellent. A romantic and quiet stay. Attentive staff, delicious breakfasts, comfortable rooms, beautiful grounds, gracious hosts. Nothing more to say. Go have a look.
