Originally the house of artist Hans Walter Bayer, the building dates from 1911 and was converted into this bijou hotel (only 23 rooms) in 1967. A mix of the old and new, the Paradies artfully showcases period details (such as the wonderful 1859 cembra pine paneling in the Stüva Paradies dining room) while the individually decorated rooms have Loewe flat-screen TVs. The walls are dotted with more than 100 works of original and local art from the owners’ collection, with the rest of the decor a medley of old-fashioned rugs, velvet sofas, scented wood and eye-catching modern furnishings. The fumoir and library is like a cozy gentlemen’s club, with antique books, Chesterfield sofas and Ralph Lauren styling.
Bed and Bath
Double rooms (194 to 237 square feet) and Junior Suites (344 square feet) all have south-facing balconies with stunning views of Piz Lischana (10,187 feet) and the 1,000-year-old Schloss Tarasp (Tarasp Castle). Each room comes with a pair of binoculars with which to enjoy the views. Rooms are individually decorated in a modern-rustic style that blends neutral colors with flashes of warmth. They make wonderful use of local cembra pine, rich in essential oils with a heady restorative scent; walk-in wardrobes and select pieces of furniture are made from it. Bathrooms are a tad nondescript but are a decent size and spotlessly clean, and they feature all the usual amenities.
Chef Daniel Stütz’s Charn Alpina restaurant serves dishes made with produce from the lower Engadin valley and an impressive selection of artisan meats (sourced from master butcher, Ludwig Hatecke). With only a few tables, sweeping views of the play of light on the Sesvenna Mountain Range, super-attentive service and stunning presentation, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to a gastronomic dreamscape. Breakfast is available all day at La Cugagna and features cheeses from nearby villages, artisanal dried meats and even water-buffalo milk from neighboring pastures. The yellow and blue–tiled Garden of Eden spa is a calm and fragrant spot, albeit one without a pool or larger-scale trappings. Try one of the soothing treatments, unwind on one of the outdoor chaises longues or treat your feet to the rooftop reflexology bath. At night, book a Dutch tub ($70, up to four people) and marvel at the immense star-filled night sky.
In the Area
Big scenery is the draw here. Charming villages with pastel graffitied houses, such as Ftan, Susch and especially Müstair, deserve a wander through. In winter, cross-country ski straight from the hotel on 3.5 miles of trails or cruise the easy–intermediate slopes at Motta Naluns (9,186 feet), which you can access from the nearest village, Ftan. In summer, head to the nearby Swiss National Park for 50 miles of hiking trails and breathtaking scenery. Anytime of year is great for soaking up the traditional spa culture here, especially at Engadin Bad, in Scuol, with its Roman-Irish baths.
How to Get There
We made a family trip to Ftan - where our daughter had been in boarding school 30 years ago.
the "Paradiesli" was wonderful, everything perfect, I could even plug in the Tesla in the garage. Unfortunately the early snow made outdoor-activities less attractive, so we enjoyed the amenities of the hotel even more: distinguished library, modern Yoga room and of course fine food and carefully selected wines.
Modern Arn lovers will enjoy an excursion to Gallery Tschudi in Zuoz and also to the light installation of James Turrell.
Impeccable even to high R&C standards. A rare case when reality is better than the photos. Worth a visit - the property provides excellent home in a beautiful surroundings. Definitely worth a visit!!!
If you are looking for a place to rest, enjoy nature and have the pleasure to share good moments at the dining table or at breakfast, do not hesitate to stay for a few days in this hotel. The staff is very helpful and will make your stay very confortable.
Spent relaxing days here in February. Location is superb with fantastic views of the Engadin snow covered mountains and valleys. Very cosy and comfortable rooms. Spa is an experience of its own, with great views from the outdoor hot tubs. Had excellent dinner with local delicacies. Service is great with very friendly staff.
The Paradies was exclusivly booked for my Bros Wedding. A big Thank to you all. We all had a unforgettable Experience in your House and sure enough because of all your Team. The honest and almost heartbreaking smile at the Reception and from the Lady who made the Rooms ready. Wow. When you order a Drink (in my case a Expresso) and you get the follwing ones exact as you like them - thats a class for itself. Rooms are rather Flats or Appartments. My favorite certainly is the "Atelier", ist like a swedish-style House for yourself. Try to get this one when you book. It is a Place to feel home. Thank you all again. Breakfast: The Paradies just became the 1st Place in "The Best Breakfast in the World". And there again, it is not just the content. It is about presentation, Content, Staff, Heart. Thanks again.
