Sprawling beachfront Cancun playground, with 448 rooms, an adults-only spa, four pools and Caribbean Sea views
The 14-story JW Marriott Cancún Resort and Spa is all about the finer things. Sure, there are three gourmet restaurants, a 35,000-square-foot spa and four pools, but unlike other JW Marriotts, this one wears a shiny AAA Five Diamond badge and reflects the sparkling Caribbean, which is on show from the balcony on each of the 448 guestrooms and suites. The allure of the water can be felt throughout the resort, from the four pools (one infinity and another that has a diving area and an artificial reef) to the 700-foot beach — which is manmade but has top-notch service and a strong WiFi signal.
Bed & Bath
With the Caribbean Sea as a ubiquitous backdrop, there’s little need to dress up or leave the resort grounds (unless you want to). The 448 rooms and suites are spacious, starting at 467 square feet, and they have welcoming sitting areas and large private balconies — a Caribbean must. On the 14th floor there’s a daily happy hour in the beach-casual, five-diamond Club 91, named after the number of steps it takes to climb Chichen Itza’s famed pyramid, which lies 126 miles to the south.
At the two-level, adults-only spa, Mayan-inspired saltwater treatments prove the benefits of the region’s natural elements. The Achiote Hydrating Envelopment treatment uses achiote seeds, which the Maya use to relieve sunburn and sunstroke. You can book a massage in one of 17 treatment rooms or, if you prefer the outdoors, one of the beachfront cabanas. The American cowboy dishes at Sedona Grill have a Southwestern flair, such as the coffee-rubbed filet mignon paired with Peruvian potato purée and Cascabel-crimini sauce. And at La Capilla (at the JW’s sister property next door, CasaMagna Marriott), teppanyaki chefs sear Argentine steak right next to your table. Should you want to venture off-site, there are a Greg Norman–designed golf course and a world-renowned reef just a short drive (or concierge call) away.
In the Area
Snorkel or scuba-dive 28 feet below the sea at the Museo Subacuatico de Arte, where artist Jason deCaires Taylor has submerged hundreds of his sculptures. From May to September, sea turtles nest on the beach in front of the resort. Staff members invite guests to help them re-nest, protect and hatch 3,000 to 5,000 baby Olive Ridley, hawksbill and green turtles each year. For golf lovers, the 18-hole, par-72 Playa Mujeres Golf Course is only 20 minutes away and is one of Mexico's best — it's a Greg Norman design, after all. Have the concierge arrange advance tee times. Or tap into the Yucatan Peninsula’s primitive side with a daytrip to Tulum’s, or head inland about 40 minutes from Highway 307 toward the Coba ruins, where climbing the temples and biking the 80 square miles of jungle are encouraged.
