All-inclusive beachfront gem with nine restaurants, a massive pool and adventure tours, located on a nature reserve
On Mexico's Riviera Maya, flanked by a 329-acre nature preserve and the cool Caribbean Sea, Hacienda Tres Rios is an all-inclusive resort with eco credentials to match its stunning location: All the buildings rest on nine-foot pilings so as not to disturb the water flowing though the wetlands, an on-site desalination plant filters seawater, cold water from deep wells is used to pre-cool the air-conditioning systems, and motion sensors turn off the electricity when the rooms are empty.
Bed and Bath
This is no bare-bones experience. Awash in orange and brilliant white, the 273 hacienda-style suites have dark mahogany furniture, Mexican marble–clad bathrooms and crisp Egyptian linens, and face the mangroves or the frothy sea. Some Junior Suites and Corner Rooms are fitted with soaking tubs on the patio.
As you’d expect, food is abundant at this all-inclusive resort, with a choice of nine restaurants and bars. The breakfast buffet is vast and never too crowded; the poolside Il Forno fires up a mean pizza, with every imaginable topping; the seven-course chef’s table is well worth the extra fee; and El Alebrije’s rose petal ice cream is scrumptious. Work off the gluttony by biking through the jungle, swimming in a limestone cenote, snorkeling to spot schools of tropical fish, and paddling in tandem kayaks along two rivers that empty into the Caribbean. The vibe is refreshingly low-key meaning no one’s going to nudge you to take a sushi-making lesson or a tequila tasting, learn to salsa dance or practice Spanish verbs — although all are available here. The intimate Ya’ax Che Spa offers aloe wraps, milk baths and mud therapy, and it’s perfectly acceptable to plop yourself down on a poolside lounger or beach-bed cabana (first come, first served) until the hot Mexican sun sets.
In the Area
Hacienda Tres Rios’s hour-long Sense Adventure takes you on a blindfolded walk through mangroves and along cenotes. Be prepared to chant, listen, touch, sniff and even taste. No peeking allowed. The resort’s chef’s table dinner isn't part of the all-inclusive deal, but for a fee you'll sit in a small room near the kitchen, savor a seven-course meal prepared by chef Oscar Orbe and be serenaded by a mariachi band. Ziplining, off-roading, rafting and swimming in underground rivers under stalactites are a few of the adrenaline-inducing activities offered at the nearby Xplor Adventure Park. Check out the seaside Mayan ruins of Tulum, then head farther afield to climb to the top of the 100-foot Ek-Balam (also known as "the Acropolis").
