How to Get There
We stayed at The Charlie after getting married. We loved it!
We are both in our sixties and were not looking for the sort of place that some younger people might choose. We wanted friendly, classy, historical, clean, and quiet, and The Charlie delivers.
The place was built in 1924 and has been the home or temporary getaway of numerous Hollywood celebrities, including Charlie Chaplin, for whom the place was named. There are 13 separate units, some of them very expensive (because they have two stories, multiple rooms, and can accommodate 6 guests), and the whole place was recently remodeled, upgraded, and modernized.
The bungalow in which we stayed, the Steve (named for the late actor Steve McQueen, who once stayed there) was affordable and elegant: full kitchen, a wonderful shower, closet space witb safe, a corner desk, a Queen sized bed, and leaded windows, including one large stained-glass window. The morning light filtering through it, as well as the shades in the kitchen allowed us to slowly wake up, bathed in a soft, diffused light. An exterior fountain next to the stained glass window provided a pleasant sound... A sound to gently awaken us, or to help us fall asleep.
There is room to roam without leaving the property: gardens, fountains, and a large deck located above the parking stalls. A touch of home was provided by the local grey cat, who was friendly and well-fed, so he didn't beg. (I didn't get his name.)
Parking is off-street and secured behind a gate. There are shops,
cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance.
We intend to go back for our anniversaries and will try out a different bungalow each visit.
This hotel has far exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved my stay at the Charlie. The charlie has a very warm homely yet sophisticated feel with units that have all the facilities one needs. Each unit is unique and different, so you feel special and not another client like one does with the commercial hotels . A little piece of English hospitality in the commercial city of LA.It's so conveniently located next to some of the best eating joints at Santa Monica Blvd. Also, one of the safest and friendliest neighborhood. Most importantly he staff is very courteous and always there to help. After a long 13 hour flight from Brisbane they were able to account me for an early check in and made sure my stay in LA was worth it.
I was back at the Charlie for the second time recently and I have to say it was just a good as the first time, if not better. They have renovated the bungalow called the Charlie where Charlie Chaplin actually resided. It was so nice and quiet and clean. it isn't connected to another room and stands alone. they have other rooms that are fantastic as well. the old Hollywood stars that have stayed there, Chaplin, Marylin Monroe, several others, Ruth Gordon, and on...this place is the best secret for anyone wanting peace and quiet and a piece of history. what I love about it, is here is this storybook setting and you would never know you are sitting in the middle of West Hollywood. Great job guys and thanks for preserving a piece of history. can't wait to come back for my next visit with the family!
This is a wonderful reprieve from the hustle of Los Angeles. It is a very comfortable small tudor B & B, handsome, well appointed with a variety of accommodations, each with their own kitchen. There is an outdoor seating area with couches and the gardens are tranquil and calming.
Upon arrival the rooms are charming, the ON-SITE managers are very good, but we had several issues and everything had to go thru the owner who was not easily accessible. Our family of 5 visited LA for the first time & specifically chose the Charlie for many reasons- the location, it’s quaint, cool history, large room size...but it was quite expensive @ $600 +taxes & unfortunately our 1st Family trip to LA was negatively affected due to one thing after another going wrong with our room at the Charlie. We checked into our first room- the Gloria- it had an odor upon arrival but was heavily masked with the smell of cleaner. We unpacked our bags & headed out for the day. Came back to a room that smelled really bad. We opened up all the windows but the smell was really bad. Next day we headed out & came back to a room that smelled disgusting- a mixture of garlic/garbage! It was intolerable, unhealthy- we couldn’t stay there. We Called the mgr on duty, he arrived & agreed & switched us to another room- The Clark. It was 10pm, we were exhausted, my youngest was crying & we were trying to pack! manager on duty did the best he could...it wasn’t his fault. We Moved to the next room- the Clark- which was the only other room that would accommodate us& the internet & tvs were broke...the mgr tried to fix them but was unable to so we just went to bed. We tried to do laundry & realized the dryer wasn’t drying our clothes & the bed was uncomfortable. Next morning we woke up, went down stairs to get into our groceries & they were COVERED IN ANTS! ANTS ALL OVER OUR doughnuts boxes, bread, cereal, chips, etc... All over $100+ groceries we had bought! Ants crawling on the ceiling! OMG! Ridiculous! Next mgr on duty came over to check it out, she took pics & called owner- who didn’t respond- These mgrs are at the owners discretion & owner wasn’t available & doesn’t want to speak directly to guest. She ended up refunding 1 night, but we felt she should’ve refunded both nights considering we were out our groceries due to ant infestation, had to find another hotel bc they couldn’t accommodate us which caused us to lose out on our vacation time. It was just bad business & really disappointed in the Charlie.
