How to Get There
I've been debating on whether or not to review this hotel as I like to provide my feedback but I'm also not a regular "over nighter" in the West Hollywood area. I usually vacation in Beach Towns like Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach which are comparatively quite different. We stayed here for 1 night as it was close to our restaurant destination for the evening... "Providence"!
Very Quaint and Quiet - Only a minute off the main streets and that minute takes you from the hustle and bustle of West Hollywood to a serene environment that you'll quite appreciate.
Private Parking - For a "non local", parking in West Hollywood can be quite stressful. No fear, as The Charlie features private parking on facility grounds and behind two large gates with "pass" code protection.
Comfortable Bed - We're not "all night" party people and enjoy our sleep with 4 kids at home. The bed was extremely comfortable and offering both a "firm" and "soft" pillow was a great attention to detail and something that's done in very high end hotels.
Beautiful Historic Grounds - As an over 100 year old property.. previously owned by Charlie Chaplin, you get to take advantage of decades of beautiful tree growth, with fountains throughout. Creating an absolutely stunning environment.
Spacious Rooms with Kitchens - I'm not sure if all the rooms have kitchens but ours did. If you plan on cooking a meal during your stay you will be happy to know that you get a full kitchen and nice size fridge.
Before I continue.. I'd like to notate that my wife and I are on a mission to stay at every 4.5 star and higher hotel that's been reviewed on either Yelp or Trip advisor throughout the Southern California area. We're on our 2nd year of traveling and have about 40 hotels under our belt ranging from San Diego to Montecito. So our next statements are taking into consideration other hotels that have a similar rating.
Here's a list of things that aren't bad but I wish it had! I think these small touches would put the "Inn" at another level and more in the likes of the "Simpson House", "Ballard Inn", "Santa Ynez Inn" and "Laguna Beach House". Here's some things from those places that we think "The Charlie" may consider implementing. Just my opinion.. take it or leave it! :)
Meet & Greet in the Parking Lot - You're driving up to such a private environment. If we were' greeted by the host.. it would immediately make guests feel more comfortable in a new environment.
Checking Bags - It would have been nice if it was at least offered to have our bag taken to the room for us. I would have personally declined.. but again it's about feeling comfortable and welcome.
Wine & Cheese "Hour" on the Upper Deck - I think it's safe to assume that every guest is here for the same reason.. for some R&R. Nothing says relaxation like offering some complimentary wines from somewhat local vineyards in Malibu, Santa Barbara, etc. This.. with some fresh fruit and crackers immediately changes the vibe for your guest and puts a face to the people sharing this private establishment with you for the evening.
Privacy - While I understand that the landscaping of this magnificent environment is a "full time" job for your gardening team. We had the gardener on our private gated patio for over 2 hours.. turning water on and off repeatedly. Recommendation is to move the house "bib" 10 ft to common ground so that the patio remains private.
That's it! It was a peaceful, quiet stay in a loud and proud city! Thanks for having us!
Great place to stay if you're visiting someone in West Hollywood. Location is very centrally located. Not far from all of the studios and about 1/2 hour to Santa Monica. I made it to LAX in about 20 minutes but that was at 5am!
The cottage are very roomy with a sitting room, full kitchen and w/d and my room was one of the smallest I understand. The staff is super helpful and super nice. I was travelling alone and felt very safe and comfortable even coming in at night. It is gated with a combo to get in and out.
Very quiet neighborhood, room was clean & kitchen furnished with all you'd need. Close to restaurants, shopping. We would consider staying there again. Staff very friendly & Helpful Loved having a robe
