Rehabilitated 1920s-era Spanish Mission Revival landmark, with a standout restaurant by a James Beard Award-winning duo

The Lowdown

This beachy, 271-key sleep embodies the best of Santa Monica’s hippie-chic DNA. Rooms are restrained but generous, dressed in coastal tones and mid-century-Europe–inspired pieces—think voluptuous settees, geometric wall sconces, and imported Fili D’Oro linens. (Spring for a Terrace King to get your own plant-filled private patio.) Elsewhere, local flair crops up in spaces like the Surya Spa, an Ayurvedic clinic steeped in the Panchkarma tradition (a succession of detoxifying treatments, carried out over the course of 5-21 days) and equipped with its own yoga terrace and fitness center, and Onda, an exciting seafaring venture between locally revered chef Jessica Koslow (of area favorite Sqirl) and Mexico-born Gabriela Camara that draws from both Californian and across-the-border ingredients for its market-driven bowls and toasts. Upstairs, Calabra, the Westside’s only rooftop pool, dazzles with Balearic bites, small-batch spirits, and boutique wines—time your visit right and you’ll be rewarded with front-row seats to a Pacific Ocean sunset.

In the Area

With its charming vintage boutiques, chef-driven restaurants, and decades-old cantinas, Wilshire Boulevard makes a fitting backdrop to this cosmopolitan property. For a truly local experience, head to the intersection of 3rd and Arizona streets, where a weekly outdoor farmers market tempts even the choosiest local gourmands. If you’re hunting for a kid-friendlier spin, make it to the Main Street version, complete with pony rides, live music, and grilled corn stalls. Be sure to take advantage of the hotel’s rental bike program and ride along the South Bay Trail, a scenic 22-mile stretch between Will Rogers State and Torrance County beaches (ask the front desk for pointers).

A luxury ending for the best vacation

We spent two weeks in California and get to stay in many different locations and hotels. Luckily we saved the best for last. Santa Monica was a great place and Santa Monica Proper Hotel was amazing.

The hotel was so beautiful that I could just sit and stare of all the little details, well picked furnitures and art pieces. The lobby, rooftop, pool area and all the public places were extremely stylish and made with good taste. I just adored the style, it was so up to date and something different from what I've seen in other hotels.

Our room with private patio was just as georgeous as the rest of the hotel and very well taken care of by the housekeeping. Bathroom was spacious, clean and functional. The bathropes were so nice. Minibar selection was fine, water bottles were complimentary. The bed was very comfortable and the linens and pillows felt luxurious.

Breakfast was delicious, allthough the service was a bit slow.

Only downside was the rooftop restaurants lunch, that just wasn't good.

Location was a bit far from the beach, but there were rental bikes. We also found few good restaurants near by.

Poor service, beautiful space

Stayed here for an anniversary celebration weekend and was disappointed by the poor service. Dirty cleaning rags left in my room, mistakes on our bill. I did alert the staff but they only offered to comp two drinks which for the $500/night room rate plus $34 resort fee is unacceptable. I would not go again.

Best Hotel in Santa Monica!

I have stayed at many hotels in Santa Monica and this by far is the best! Brand new, centrally located and amazing service. The rooms are equipped with everything you could possible want and need. The products are amazing - I felt like I was at a spa in my own guestroom (we even bought some after staying there). The service was very personalized and attention to details. I truly couldn't have asked for a better stay! Make sure to hit the pool and have a cocktail there!!
