How to Get There
This hotel served our needs well for a few nights when we traveled to Santa Cruz as a family. We did not want to stay near the crush of people at the Boardwalk, and were traveling with our dog... so our options were limited. This turned out to be a perfect option! Plenty of areas to walk the dog (its next to a park), easy to walk over the footbridge to downtown, and fast access to freeway to explore the area. The rooms were very clean-- though we had to make a request to get the room made up as the first day they never showed up. My favorite touch in the very eco-conscious town of Santa Cruz was the glass bottles and water-filling stations on every floor! A very nice touch!
My boyfriend and I and another couple stayed here for three nights in a standard room. The room was very comfortable and stylish. We appreciated the Illy espresso set up, the nice bathroom products, and the Netflix/Hulu TV. In general there are lots of nice touches and perks at this hotel. Free bikes (nice cruisers with baskets), happy hours, yoga, etc. Also, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate everything we asked for and were all super friendly. Carter, in particular, was amazing! So, the exceptional customer service and all of the nice little perks really made the overall experience go above and beyond my expectations.
The pool and hot tub are both pretty big, with tons of lounge chairs and cabanas you can rent. There's also a fire pit and a ping pong table. Also, they have poolside service for food and drinks. It's a really great set-up for a day at the pool, if you don't mind kids...
That being said, my ONE complaint is that it was a bit overrun with kids, at least for the 4 days we were there. (Disclaimer, I do not have kids but love 'em and am not one of those people who just hates children!) This was really only painful around the pool as the kids were mostly unsupervised... cannon balls in the hot tub, screaming and splashing in the pool. I can totally see how this is a great set up for a family as there's something for everyone. But, there were lots of other adults who were not traveling with children and they seemed pretty frustrated with the chaos, including the big group on a bachelorette trip.
I think it was just a bit surprising as the hotel is so chic and minimal and posh feeling... I wasn't expecting it to feel so much like a water park around the pool. If anything it seems like the type of place that might even be 'Adults Only'.
I guess what I mean to convey here is that it is a really nice hotel with exceptional service and perks, just be warned that it is also a VERY kid-friendly property. So, if you are sensitive to the noises/chaos that naturally comes from kids being kids at the pool (especially unsupervised because mom and dad are having a relaxing day themselves), then this might not be a great fit for you. If I were the manager here I might consider establishing some "adults only" swim times during the day, that might be a way to please everyone?
- If you want a little seated patio ask for a ground floor room.
- If you're looking for quiet, make sure you ask for a room that is not facing the pool.
- If you're looking for a relaxing pool weekend without kiddos, maybe look elsewhere (even though the hotel is super nice!)
- Take advantage of the free bikes as there's an awesome paved bike path from the hotel down to the beach/boardwalk!
I recently stayed at the Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz. I found the staff to be very friendly and attentive.. the room was excellent!! It felt clean and fresh and the bathroom was A-mazing!!! I wish i had gone in the pool which looked great.. my Only semi-complaint, more like constructive criticism, would be that the mattress was not very comfortable/too hard and the sheets were pilled which bothered me.. especially since it isn’t a cheap place to stop and really you’re there to sleep..
but really it was pretty great, in a great location and well maintained ( plus breakfast at the restaurant was fantastic
Very minimalistic hotel. Good use of space. It’s clean but it’s still a bit away from the beach and downtown although they do offer a shuttle service. They have a pool and a hot tub which is nice and clean. Restaurant food was average in taste but on the expensive side.
I found my stay at Hotel Paradox to be very pleasant and relaxing. The rooms are very up to date and beds are super comfortable. I personally found the general noise of the hotel at night- pipes etc to be a bit much but earplugs helped a great deal. It’s in a great location and the pool area is beautiful. They have a strict no outside food on the premises policy so that was a little off putting especially if you just want to enjoy a Starbucks in your room 😊 I plan to visit again for sure!
