How to Get There
This is a very dated property undergoing a major remodel. They've done a fantastic job updating the lobby / bar area and the addition of a little market. The rooms are still quite dated and beds old. The remodel is to be completed Summer 2019.
I'm Platinum, and they had no upgrades available early on a Monday...they didn't say it was because of the remodel. The lounge is nice though and will save you from paying $30 for a breakfast.
Location: While this is called the Airport Marriott, this is not the one next to the airport. That is the Airport Waterfront on Old Bayshore Highway. While there isn't any restaurants or places of interest to walk to from this location, a quick Lyft will get you into San Mateo which is nice. It is also nice to hop over to Half Moon Bay if you have time.
The hotel is nice - spectacular lobby, good service, clean room. It was hard to find the entrance, the Uber driver drove around a bit before we figured it out. The entrance faces the highway.
We asked for, and got, a quiet room. It was clean, spacious, and had a little balcony.
There is a dining room/cafe in the lobby. The service is adequate. The food is adequate. The prices are San Francisco adequate.
I had an amazing experience at this Marriott. I especially want to put a shout out to Cody who treated me better than I have been treated at almost any hotel. He was warm, kind, and attentive. My room was not available (at 11am, which was much earlier than check-in). He communicated well and did all he could to make my stay comfortable. The entire hotel staff was friendly and efficient. I even changed my other hotel reservations for future trips to stay at a Marriott. Very very happy!
We stayed at this Marriott while in town for a boys volleyball tournament that was held at the San Mateo Convention Center (not really walk-able by the way). The staff was outstanding, but the hotel, once you get past the newly renovated lobby is in serious need of updating. It is definitely not up to Marriott standards. The location is good, easy to get to and whatnot, but I wouldn't recommend unless you are getting a serious discount.
The reception was friendly and helpful, wide hallways, two little gyms with good equipment (one cardio and one weights), on-site dinning, airport shuttle that leaves on the hour and a large bedroom with comfortable bed and pillows....but...
Heat didn’t work and was on an antiquated system (picture attached for comedy), I’m not sure what they would have done but I was too tired to call for a solution. Luckily I was had two queen beds and I simply pulled the blankets off the other bed. Lots of electrical outlet options but I found them all to be loose. There was a tv in each room but they were old and didn’t adjust the aspect ratio correctly. I ordered room service, which came quickly, but the food was mediocre at best and careless at worst - the Swiss onion soup (not sure what made it Swiss besides the cheese - is Gruyere unavailable?) The carpets were old and furniture outdated and if Marriott doesn’t update there three standard photos on their walls they are going to be as old as the column they depict.
In essence, when you stay at a Category hotel of this rank, I expect a little more and I received a little less.
Note: at the entrance they did build the hotel around a beautiful tree and they had nice moss art hangings. Loved that.
