Gold and violet lights glow from inside the glass walls that encircle this Pacific Beach gem, by far the coolest waterfront hotel in San Diego. Architect Graham Downes, the design mind behind some of the city’s hippest clubs and hotels, mixed invisible windows with sleek white walls to create a visually stimulating presence amid the waterfront’s mix of restaurants and rental homes. The result is a sweet beach pad, named for the nearby Tower 23 lifeguard tower.
Bed & Bath
All of the guestrooms have modern amenities such as rain showers, flat-screen TVs that seem to float on white walls, and cushy platform beds. Some rooms face the sea; others look out onto a peaceful garden. Book a suite for chromotherapy whirlpool tubs by Kohler.
The indoor spaces are cool—we love the buzzy JRDN raw bar—but the main scene is under the sun. Pacific Beach attracts a fun crowd of surfers, cyclists, volleyball players and sexy sunbathers. Take one of the hotel’s free beach cruisers or skateboards to the boardwalk that runs from the more crowded community of Mission Beach north to PB’s green lawns, which front a gorgeous beach. Tower 23’s JRDN restaurant has front row seats overlooking the scene and serves award-winning steaks, seafood and sushi.
In the Area
Sign up for a surfing class at Pacific Beach Surf Shop, then sample the waves at Tourmaline Surfing Park. Or, stroll down the boardwalk to the Giant Dipper roller coaster in Mission Beach’s Belmont Park. Get the day going with a giant breakfast of eggs, pancakes, bacon and potatoes at Kono’s Café, beside the Crystal Pier. Join the fun in the pit at Bar West, the sleekest bar in Pacific Beach.
How to Get There
Absolutely amazing hotel experience from the first minute to the last. Most important: the Sweet Suite is simply one of the best rooms we’ve stayed in in our lives. Get it if you can. Staff service with a smile and an extra offer of help was consistent at all hours and all services. Parking guys were gracious, front desk extremely professional and helpful, and room servers were extra positive and there to please. Even the lighting in the room was notable for its perfection. Room service breakfast of acai bowls and avo toast were even a step above. We could not believe the size, depth, and power of the in room jacuzzi. This place is SoCal special magic. We live AT the beach locally and STILL felt like we were on a getaway. We’ll be back for more staycation dreams! Manager Steven was the epitome of making you feel like a VIP.
Everything here is just a little sparse and minimalist in terms of decoration. First impressions when we walked into the lobby at check-in were not great. Lots of money has been invested here to convert an old beachfront motel into a "trendy cool boutique hotel" but certain things cannot be changed (e.g. narrow and serpentine corridors).
Our room, a Surf Pad, had a spectacular view over the beach and ocean. Again the room itself, although perfectly comfortable and clean, was pretty sparsely decorated.
Location of the hotel is wonderful, right on the boardwalk and beach in Pacific Beach. Service is very good. Valet parking. Excellent restaurant. Wifi works well. However, I did not think the place provided good value for the money paid.
From beginning to end the staff was amazing, attendants, valet, restaurant, front desk, and especially Robby that served us on the sun deck were all amazing. We'll definitely be back. Added bonus was making new life long friends on the sun deck.
